Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM
Edgy MD Jul 03 2016 06:46 PM |
Declare your independence: from tyranny, from ugly, bush league hats, and from loyalty to pitchers educated in crayon. National League loss leader Matt Harvey takes on New Rochelle's own Tom Koehler — in a battle of pitchers with ERAs in the mid-fours. The ball is flying out, and in the late afternoon of Citi Field, something has to give.

As Gary mentioned during today's telecast, this is a [u:7i6u2eli]4 PM start[/u:7i6u2eli] despite it saying 1 PM on a number of pre-season schedules.

It was likely all the fireworks the Mets set off against Lester and the Cubs that made you think that.

Looks likey a lot of late games today. It's like MLB wanted folks to take in their baseball in between the barbecues and the fireworks.

Why isn't it blue? Blue is both a mets color and a flag color

Edgy MD Jul 04 2016 02:42 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |
I don't know what color they're going to be wearing but all of the hats at that site were red or that deep navy.
|
Zvon Jul 04 2016 03:01 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |
Those caps are horribly garish. I'm going to design an ALL-STAR cap for Mets players. All the other teams can kiss my ass.

|
bmfc1 Jul 04 2016 03:43 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |
I love replay because umps suck and are a blight on the game but replay on tag plays should be stopped. If the cameras can overrule the ump standing right frigging there than eliminate the ump and use the cameras all the time.

Frayed Knot Jul 04 2016 03:59 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |

Obviously Nimmo's bad throw (and Granderson's non-throws) contributed to that inning, but maybe Harvey can try NOT giving up hits to 6 of the first 10 he faces. ** and now 7 of the first 12

Frayed Knot Jul 04 2016 04:02 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |

Trying to insert replay technology into calls but yet attempting to keep it limited has long been the blight on the whole idea. The NFL is now, what?, 35 years into their use of it and their response to all its problems continues to be, 'oh we just have to tweak it a bit and then it'll be fine'.

|
Frayed Knot Jul 04 2016 04:22 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |
And, once again, even our hits w/RiSP don't score any actual runners (although they would have had Granderson run like Ronnie said) which inevitably leads to the bases-loaded pop-out.

Lefty Specialist Jul 04 2016 04:38 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |
Even so, Harvey can't be giving up 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings. You can't give up an RBI hit to a pitcher who's 1 for 25.

I hear all this about 'professional ABs' that Gary & Ron are talking about, and I know it might seem a bit picky to complain after tying up a game they once trailed by 6-0, but an actual hit with runners in scoring position might be nice every once in a while.

I don't think the ball hitting the ground is the issue. It's possession of the ball. It was securely in the glove IMO.

|
Frayed Knot Jul 04 2016 07:58 PM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |
|
I feel like he owes me one too. Y'know, as weird of a game as this was for NYM bats, it was at least as bad for the Marlins who someone managed to get 'only' six runs while grinding out 17 hits - which is pretty poor when you consider that we handed them at least half of those six runs with errors (only one officially) and some all-around sloppy play. The key was 15 of those 17 being singles, only drawing two walks, plus two GiDPs (the first two outs of the game and the last two) and a really poorly-timed bunt-into-DP. So as much as the Mets sometimes suffer for their over-reliance on HRs, there's a reason why BA correlates less well to scoring runs than does OBA or SLG or OPS.

This turned out to be a 5-1 win, and a good game for a lot of fresh-off-the-boat draftees. Gene Cone and Blake Tiberi each had two hits, and top 2016 draft pick Justin Dunn made his professional debut, pitching the last two innings, giving up no runs on two hits, walking none and striking out a pair.

We missed the last part of the comeback, having gone off line and driving 30 minutes to Auburn, NY to seek out some A-ball baseball (all for the sake of seeing both baseball and fireworks on July 4th, with the hometown Chiefs on the road this year).
|
Edgy MD Jul 05 2016 07:40 AM Re: Independence Day IGT 7/4 MIA@NYM |

This is what's maddening about this team. If it wasn't bad enough that they allowed Harvey to pitch while cooking, they had to be absolutely perfect in executing their comeback WHILE washing dishes. And then scoring those last two runs while trying to operate an automobile? You're making this too hard on yourselves, Mets.

Is there any web site that does a concise 2-3 minute video recap of a baseball game? Any time I go looking for highlights I have to click on each play and wade through 6-10 links to see the big moments. Can't they just recap it for me without making me watch that many commercials first?

That's the military standard. At least, that's the standard for any (most?) US military uniforms in which the flag is worn on the right shoulder. The idea, if I've got it right, is that the field of stars should be in the position of highest honor.
