Independence Day IGT II: 7/5 MIA@NYM

Yes, July 5 is the day celebrated since 1811, marking the independence of Venezuelans from Spain. The American Confederacy of Venezuela presented the Venezuelan Declaration of Independence to the world, making its authors, Cristóbal Mendoza and Juan Germán Roscio, the greatest Venezuelan heroes ever. That is, until Wilmer Flores. I'm not sure if MLB is planning any special uniforms.

Wilmer will be leading the charge with patriotic zeal, as the Mets defend their turf, their place in the standings, and their five-game winning streak against the invading Marlins. Wei-Yin Chen, throwing for the Marlins, tries to find his Baltimore form. The defense will be led by Steven Matz, born in Stony Brook, but with the good sense to steer well clear of the local university.

Chen throws with his port side fin, so look for Juan Lagares in the lineup, and possibly a spicy side dish of Matt Reynolds.

Re: Independence Day IGT II: 7/5 MIA@NYM

Chen was smacked around in his June starts by such powerhouses as the Twins, Padres, Rockies, and Braves to the tune of 19 runs on 31 Hits over 18 innings - with only a good starts vs the Cubs of all teams mixed in between.

I suspect we could see a Reyes at 3rd / Flores at 1st deal, keeping Wilmer's hot bat in while giving Loney the night off vs the lefty

Cespedes hit a laser off the facing of the second deck. And Matz looks very sharp, having thrown 6 pitches in the 5th.

Jose does not have a chance or a hit yet.

It's not going to be popular, but I just have to say it: The Marlins uniforms have grown on me and I like them. I don't like the number font, and the cap logo seems a little too big. But I like them.

Glad I got that off my chest.

Since he was in charge of the Astros in the early '90s?

Meanwhile we're slipping back into the mode of how things were prior to the Cubs series last week, getting [crossout]2[/crossout], now 3, hits off a pitcher who had been giving up nearly 2 per inning (1.7) over his last four starts.

Nats got it to 5-2 but then Harper K'd with 2-outs and the bases loaded ... so there's that.

Stanton busts out. What can ya do? Sad but Matz pitched decent. Goeddel was gassed from the get-go and we all could see it. All cept TC I guess.
4 hits?! Oy.

Re: Independence Day IGT II: 7/5 MIA@NYM

One thing you can do is control the situation you face Stanton in.

But Giancarlo is really a different hitter. Standing up straight and getting full extension on his swings, particularly the low pitch. It's like the long, loopy swing of a left-hander coming from the right side. There aren't a lot of hitters like that, and fewer that are successful. Flores is kind of like that, and Tim Wallach is the most prominent example I can think of. He can still be effective, but there are holes in that sort of swing, and I don't think he'll ever be as effective as he was.

A "sweep type"* hitter getting full extension and then hitting the ball a long ways reminds me of Dave Kingman.

Later

Yeah, Kong liked to stand up straight, reach down and pick up the low pitch and golf it to who knows where.

And Stanton has a pretty Kingmanian stat line these days.

Re: Independence Day IGT II: 7/5 MIA@NYM

I don't know if it's Terry's call to even have him there. He said something to the effect of "he thinks he's ready so that's good enough for us!" I'm suspicious of the whole thing being a Jeff Idea.

The circumstances match the Alderson MO to seek bargains, but I saw Reyes myself a week ago look like crap in Brooklyn.

I HATE that he got back No. 7. He fucked up all kinds of momentum.

Still time to be proven wrong on this, but I think what they've decided is that Reyes is going to be given the luxury of playing his way Out of the lineup rather than the other way around -- mostly at the expense of Wilmer it seems.

Wilmer and maybe Zimmo too. I realize TC is terrified to start Zimmo vs. lefties but he also looks to me to be a decent bet as a leadoff guy.

A far better bet at this point, really.

Hidden Terry-Giving-Away-Things point, with a far less emotionally-loaded context: Granderson (only .330-plus OBP in the last four years was a BABIP-buoyed .364 last year) returning to tenured leadoff spot over Nimmo the other night.

You'd think given Grandy's exceptional ability to ground out to the right side he'd be an ideal No. 2.

I think the Marlins uniforms are genius. Off the top of my head, those unis are the best marriage of baseball, team and city.

But we're definitely in the minority, I think. Uni-Watch rated all of the MLB unis a year or two ago and the Marlins unis were at or near the very bottom of the list.

What's my least favorite MLB uni? I think it might be the Diamondbacks unis, which always looked incredibly infantile to me.
