IGT 07/09 - WAS @ (not WAS)

David Lennon writes in Newsday:
Harvey's gone for the season. Cespy has a quad strain. Syndergaard's been diagnosed with "arm fatigue". Life is awful. Fanstats.com* predicts that the Mets will finish 23 games behind the Nationals. Sandy needs to make a move NOW!!!?!##?!?!?!? I call bullshit. It's no fun to lose Harvey, but we haven't been getting anything out of him this season, so it's not making this year's team any worse than it already is. And what it already is is a team that would still make the playoffs if the season ended today, and is still within striking distance of Washington. Losing Cespedes sucks. But we've won without him before. Nobody has any clue what's up with Syndergaard. But, you know, maybe we can win the odd game anyway. Logan Verrett has a knack for winning games as a spot starter. Flores is hitting. Walker is hitting. Granderson is getting on base. We had a bad day yesterday. Bad days happen. I'll just ignore the fact that Scherzer is pitching tonight. Me, I feel better now. I feel better than James Brown. *There's no such thing. I just pulled that out of my butt.

He's obviously going for as many LH/SwH bats as he can get vs Scherzer - all but d'Arnaud (and Verrett).
|
Edgy MD Jul 09 2016 05:38 PM Re: IGT 07/09 - WAS @ (not WAS) |
I imagine his position would be that it's been hot in part because of the benevolent situations he's been inseinserting it in, but yeah.

The real question is why I'm blacked out on the internet because I live in Baltimore, which is an hour outside of DC, but in a different media market, even though it's a damned national broadcast.

|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 09 2016 07:20 PM Re: IGT 07/09 - WAS @ (not WAS) |
|
Logan Verrett isn't the problem here. The problem is that in this depleted state, against a team like this and a pitcher like this, the Mets need to cash in every opportunity they're damn well handed, and not give away the cheap shit... and they're 0-2 so far. The other guys do the small things better than the Mets do at present, and our guys may not be equipped to do the big things to offset that. Especially tonight, against a team like this and a pitcher like this.

Yep, leading off an inning. I saw that and switched over to Mr. Robot for awhile so I didn't even see the triple. Scherzer looked a little shaky early on. We should have pounced.

If I remember correctly, I was OK with Murphy going unless it would turn out that his end of last season newfound skill-set was for real and not just randomness.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 09 2016 08:47 PM Re: IGT 07/09 - WAS @ (not WAS) |
Not that Cespedes hasn't been good, but there was more statistical/video-based evidence to support a Murph-has-turned-a-corner argument than a Cespedes-is-a-destroyer-now one.

American Ninja Warrior time.
|
Zvon Jul 09 2016 08:48 PM Re: IGT 07/09 - WAS @ (not WAS) |
IIRC I felt if it was a choice between re-signing Muff and getting Cespedes to stay, because of financial restraints, then I wanted them to get Yoenis. But being a NYC market team, we really should be able to afford them both. So I don't know if I lay this all on Sandy.

|
bmfc1 Jul 09 2016 09:36 PM Re: IGT 07/09 - WAS @ (not WAS) |
After the high of Thursday night's game, the Mets lose 2 games (plus Harvey for the year plus Noah and Cespedes for an undetermined time) and now face a must-game on Sunday if they want to stay competitive in the division. If they lose, the division is doubtful and their best hope is a Wild Card spot. They are currently a WC team but that means staying ahead of Miami, Pittsburgh and St. Louis and then (as of now) travelling to LA and facing Kershaw. Better to win the division which means that Matz needs to step it up on Sunday so the Mets go into the break 4 out instead of 6.

You said it. This guy blows more goats than a ... goat-blowing machine. Fans gave De Aza a lotta crap but he did reach base twice and relative to expectations and contract he's not underperforming nearly to the level this goat-blowing bastard is.
