IGT 7/18/16: NYM@CHC -- Keep The Fire Burnin'

Even Illinois' own REO Speedwagon, the first name band to play a postgame concert at Citi Field, knows the Mets keep burnin' the Cubs -- four in a row last October, four in a row a couple of weeks ago. Plus there's that one-game winning streak they arrive in Chicago on.

Matz keeps the fire burnin' tonight versus Lester.

I should have penciled in Floryes, but wasn't thinking.
Not sure how Baez ended up on the end but I should pay more attention before 'submit.'

Gary's wrong about the pitchers' numbers on the Shea scoreboard, there absolutely was a time when you had to check the program in order to find out which number corresponded with which pitcher.

The online game pitch chart thing has it looking like an outside pitch. Did he hang one out there?

Rizzo is so on top of the plate that an outside pitch to him isn't really outside.

Jeeze Loueeze Travis, learn how to properly block a pitch. You don't back hand that. Apply yourself. Drop to your knees, get low to the ground, put that glove face open to close that hole under your ass. I think he may be the cause of all his injuries. On that play, if he did it right he wouldn't have a bruised neck.

But didn't the scorecard indicate the pitcher's uniform number rather than some arbitrary sequential number? It wouldn't be 1 Cuellar 2 Dobson 3 McNally 4 Palmer. (Would it?)

Yes it was. Just like they were talking about at Wrigley still to this day, the active pitchers for each team were listed alphabetically in the program which corresponded to the number on the scoreboard.
Don't remember specifically when they 'updated' to the uniform number but it definitely existed for a while.

Maybe one of the guys around here who specializes in dredging up old photos of Shea will come up with one where all the pitchers seemed to have single digit numbers.
The only difference in those days is that the numbers only went up to 9 or 10. Tonight in Wrigley some team was using pitcher #15

Shoot. I've collected any decent pic I have ever found of the old monster but that folder is still on my old PC. I'll get to it though. I was fascinated with that scoreboard. That's why I felt compelled to sneak up into it after a game once back in the early 70's.

Gary & Ron were talking about Wrigley's scoreboard which still lists pitchers by numbers 1 through whatever based on an alphabetical list.
And Gary mentioned they used to do that at Yanqui stadium back in the day but never did so at Shea. That shocked me because Gary remembers 10x more about that era Mets than I do yet I was sure that he was wrong.

And I found another photo from as late as 1969 where the system was still in use but I can't get it to transfer here.

Thanks. Interesting info. I hate to admit it but I don't think I ever noticed that they had a line for the pitcher like that. I know the useless stuff like THROWING OF OBJECTS IS PROHIBITED. I was aware of the little ump section. That was pretty kool.

A scoreboard shot with non-uni numbers denoting the out of town pitchers in a game vs Montreal which puts it no earlier than 1969
In fact that's Opening Day 1969. Mets would score 4 times in the 9th to lose 11-10 in the Expos first ever game.
[crossout:3k6bso7o]Asdrubal Cabrera[/crossout:3k6bso7o] Rod Gaspar struck out with runners on 1st & 2nd to end the game.

I remember that, and I'm younger than you. Back then, you needed the secret decoder book to figure out who was pitching in the out of town games. Here are two scoreboard pics --- more evidence -- the b&w's from 1965, the color one's from 1973. The Getty ad is the '73 giveaway. That and the scoreboard message referring to the Mets '73 yearbook. Staub's also the right-fielder in the color pic. It's a complete game one-hit shutout for Jon Matlack on July 10, 1973. Astro leadoff hitter and ex-Met hero Tommie Agee goes 0-4 with three K's in his last season. and makes the last out of the game. Agee was the only Astro to come to the plate four times, as Matlack faces just one more than the minimum number of batters. The Mets remain in last place, 12 games behind the first place Cubs, who are 14 games over .500. It'll be another Cubs fade at the Mets expense soon enough. (As you all know.)

Like I said, what triggered this whole discussion was Gary's testimony about how the Shea scoreboard always operated with regular uniform numbers indicating the pitchers. The fact that I knew that wasn't the case even while attending fewer games and retaining far less trivial knowledge as compared to Gary, I was surprised that no one contacted the booth within that very inning to correct him.
Will have to listen in tonight to see if he revisits the topic.

Looks to me like that's 1965 starting NYM SS Roy McMillan, on the screen there with all the clarity and definition of your parents mid-60s 19" Zenith b&w set.

I always remember there being a Mets logo where that "creepy face" is. But I do recall hearing that it was originally intended to be an early version of Diamond Vision but it didn't work out. I wonder when they gave up on that experiment? I first started watching the Mets in 1971 and by then the Mets logo was definitely in place.

I think that's old Roy McMillan. OE: His corresponding # & position are highlighted on the scoreboard.

With glasses:

This is an unreleased mfc card- I used this photo for his '66 card.

They showed a still shot of the batter via a rear projection slide machine, & that was still up there in 1972. Inside the "logo box" it was a small room, walls and surface old and rusty, although the slide machine didn't look all that bad. I found a headset in there, an old TV type with a mic attached. It only covered one ear and the part that rested on your head stopped short of the other ear. The mic was movable and swiveled to a position in front of your mouth. Cripes, I should just google a pic.

Almost exactly like this one^

I took that home with me. It didn't work. IIRC the plug/jack chord had been cut short. But I still treasured it for a short time.

I alluded to that earlier in the IGT. I think the ball-switching is weak. Either you make a statement by throwing the actual HR ball back, or save it and try to Ebay it or whatever. The kids a true Cub fan. He was gonna throw the real ball back.
