Photo Essay of Disco Demolition Day: http://www.dawhitephotography.com/disco-demolition

What a day to be young, white, and high. May be the whitest ballpark crowd since integration.

Amazing that a landmark game of the seventies coincided with one of the appearances of the Sox in shorts.

Lotta Stroh's being downed that day. Love the guy rolling a joint with a broken arm. That's skillz.

Too bad the shooter ran out of film. It was only beginning to get crazy.

You hate to compare this to actual shit that might be going down in the world today but in 1979 hating disco and saying it sucked while wearing cutoff jeans and a baseball hat with your rock-n-roll-loving friends was the easiest, most natural thing to do, even if it wasn't completely instinctive.

The most insane thing is this "war" still goes on in some minds. And some day, perhaps 30 years down the road, we'll find the Rock-Disco Wars version of Hirō Onoda, still holed up somewhere fighting the good fight, and we'll have to bring in an ancient Ted Nugent or somebody with a megaphone to convince him to surrender.

Especially so considering that it's at a ballpark smack in the middle of Chicago's south side.

Looking at those pics - we were a much skinnier nation back then.
Even taking into consideration that those on film are almost entirely in the 18-30 demo, a similar set of shots today would reveal very differently shaped people.

Hey, look, found a dark-skinned dude.

Also, check out the Mets, beating the piss out of the two-time defending NL champs.

Any effort to destroy (at least part of) Comiskey Park was considered Urban Renewal.

One of only three Doc Ellis Mets wins in captivity.

I hope somebody asked Tommy Lasorda what his opinion was on that first inning.

It's the south side, but the Comiskey (OK, US Cellular) neighborhood is about as white/working class/Irish as Chicago gets. The Daleys were from there.
