Continuing a popular Turkish traditional, the military is supposedly throwing out the government as we speak!

Erdogan is pretty horrible. Of course, somebody worse could always take his place.

Re: Military Coup?

Erdoğan has been a nightmare of an autocrat but obviously you'd like to end nightmares within the institutions of the Democratic process. As the bridge between the Middle East and Europe, it's not the place you want to fall into anarchy. Just, let us remember there's a third way between autocracy and anarchy, Turkey.

Looks like my friend Mark got out of there with his wife and kids in a nick of time.

news says the army has closed off the physical bridges in Istanbul that literally connect the Middle East to Europe.

Re: Military Coup?

Perhaps, but an army in such a crisis, while we hope it can be agent of law, order and justice, can quite quickly become an agent of something quite the opposite.

The more I think about it, the more I realize it's one of the most important places on the map. And I realize why, when regime change in a country is threatened, foreign governments often subtly root have the stability of known despot or even an enemy than a potentially more friendly unknown upstart. They keep backing the devil they know.

Re: Military Coup?

Looks like this has been put down. Erdogan, already a strongman, will use this to consolidate his power further. Expect quite the crackdown now.

~ 250 dead and 1,500 wounded in last thing I saw. It's like every freakin' day something
fucked up is going down somewhere in the world and it's driving me crazy.

Maybe that country'll relax its copyright laws enforcement so that Turkish Batman, in its entirety, can play again on Youtube.

I can forgive all the other ridiculousness but Batman shooting bad guys dead with a hand gun is a bunch of bullshit.

Re: Military Coup?

I should have watched this instead of the Mets game tonight. This too was incredibly bad with some incomprehensible moments but at least the participants weren't being paid millions of dollars.

Re: Military Coup?

I'm generally no conspiracy theorist. And my knowledge about Turkish affairs doesn't go river-deep. But this is one instance-- terribly-planned coup attempt, executed with significant civilian targeting, during a time when Erdogan isn't anywhere near the capital-- where the likelihood of a false-flag operation sounds a little north of ImpossibleTown. (I mean, it's still somewhere in the suburbs of HighlyUnlikelyBurg, but still.)

The exiled populist leader he wants extradited from here has similar thoughts, but then, he would.

Re: Military Coup?

I wouldn't say it's impossible. Erdogan is working through his enemies list, almost like this had been planned. And asking the US to turn over his rival for nebulous reasons? Hmmmm.

Re: Military Coup?

i never buy into conspiracy theories, because they assume that all the conspirators are intelligent enough, and discreet enough, to pull off such chicanery. My experience of humanity indicates that such an assumption is baseless. However, even i had the initial thought that this works out well for a strong man leader trying to consolidate and increase his power.

But more importantly:
I can forgive all the other ridiculousness but Batman shooting bad guys dead with a hand gun is a bunch of bullshit.

Actually, Zvon, Batman started out in the comics armed with a pistol, shooting at bad guys.
