It's hard to leave out the platypus. I mean ... an egg-laying mammal. What the hell do you do with that?

But the 'roos, man. Look at this terrifying badass.

It lays eggs and produces milk ( its a mammal, right?) so I guess you can make omelets.

1. Robin (Dick Grayson -- the first and the best)
2. Ebony White (the Spirit). Ignoring the character design (which is clearly offensive today and was probably so even when the character was created), Ebony was the first black character in a superhero comic that that treated as a human being. He rescued the hero from time to time and was treated by the Spirit as an equal. It did descend into minstrel show from time to time (especially when Will Eisner wasn't writing the strip), but it was generally an honest attempt to portray a black person as a person.
3. Woozie Winks from "Plastic Man." Great comic relief.
4. "Snapper" Carr (JLA)
5. Jimmy Olsen
6. Streaky
7. Beverly Switzer (Howard the Duck)
8. Lucien (Sandman)
9. Matthew (Sandman)
10. Stripesy. (The Star Spangled Kid and Stripesy). I haven't read much of him, but the idea of an adult sidekick to a boy superhero gets credit for the old switcheroo.

If I were ranking the Batman villains:

1) Catwoman (Julie Newmar version): My wife bought me the DVDs of the first series recently. Watching them now is a different experience than as a 7-year-old for sure! Lee Meriweather was basically a lookalike in the same role, a one-off for the movie. Not complaining.

2) Joker: He was actually menacing. And the episode where he owns the surf shop and has the big completion with Batman, both in their board shorts? Awesome! And he actually tied to cover his mustache with makeup.

3) Riddler (Frank Gorshin version): He was perfect because he actually seemed unhinged. The laugh, the suit, the exaggerated gestures... Perfect!

4) Penguin: He was so perfect that Danny DeVito had no chance.

5) Catwoman, (Ertha Kitt version): She actually sounded like a cat. And she had that crazy cat car.

6) Egg Head: Vincent Price had an unlimited supply of egg puns.

7) King Tut: The episode where Batman is in the sarcophagus underwater scared me as a kid. But I usually felt bad for King Tut, who was always just a nice professor until he was bonked on the head.

8) Mr. Freeze (Otto Preminger version): Preminger was notoriously difficult to work with on the set. But he was a good villain.

9) Mad Hatter: David Wayne had that hat with the eyes that popper out and hyptonized people.

10) Louie the Lilac: Milton Berle as a flower-loving bad guy.

Now, the Baskin-Robbins flavored, hopefully being served in a baseball helmet cup:

1) Mint chocolate chip
2) Pralines and Cream
3) Rocky Road
4) Peanut Butter and Chocolate
5) Very Berry Strawberry
6) Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
7) Strawberry Cheesecake
8) Chocolate
9) Cookies N Cream
10) Jamoca Almond Fudge

Missed this fun, but I'd like to add my 2 cents.
Best black and white comedy: The Loved One (1955). Advertised as "The movie to offend everyone", it lived up to the ads.

Best Villain: Some villains try to run a city, control a country or rule the world. But my vote goes to the badass who wanted to conquer the Universe - Ming the Merciless.

Who are YOUR top ten Civil War figures?

10. Martin Green. Confederate general, whose last words-- in response to a warning to keep his head down on the battlefield-- were reported to have been "A bullet has not yet been molded that will kill me." Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Irony (posthumous).

9. Timothy Webster. British-born, a former police officer in New York City, became the Civil War’s first double agent. Sent by Secret Service honcho Pinkerton to Richmond, he pretended to be a courier on the Secret Line, and managed to gain the trust of Judah P. Benjamin, the Confederate secretary of war (later secretary of state). Benjamin sent Webster to deliver documents to secessionists in Baltimore, which Webster promptly passed on to Pinkerton and his staff. Webster was eventually arrested, tried as a spy, and sentenced to death.

8. Rose O'Neal Greenhow. Southern belle widow living and frequently entertaining in DC, with many northern political friends... who ferreted tidbits from their parlor conversation back to Secret Line Confederacy apymasters; essentially won First Bull Run with her intel.

7. Ambrose Burnside. Straight outta RI, instrumental in protecting the Capitol early on, failed at Fredericksburg. Dat hair, tho.

6. Samuel Sprigs Carroll. Started at corporal, but earned his way up the ladder to brigadier general with extraordinary valor at both Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; injured in several other battles, then lost an arm at Spotsylvania Courthouse; continued to serve, both in the Army of the Shenandoah and postwar, in the US Army. And DAT HAIR, THO

5. Winfield Scott Hancock. Union general/Zelig; was critical field general in the Battles of Williamsburg, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse; after the war, he served as commander of the Division of the Atlantic and ran for president as a Democrat in 1880, losing to James Garfield. Generally considered one of the most toothsome dudes in the whole command-- the facial hair probably didn't hurt.

4. Allen Pinkerton. Founder of the detective agency in Chicago; had collected intelligence for Union General George B. McClellan during the first months of the Civil War, while McClellan led the Department of Ohio; in charge of intelligence for his Army of the Potomac, setting up the first Union espionage operation in mid-1861; calling himself E.J. Allen, built a counterintelligence network in Washington and sent undercovers to ingratiate themselves in the Confederate capital of Richmond. Unfortunate side note: Pinkerton’s intelligence reports from the field during 1862′s Peninsula Campaign consistently miscalculated Confederate numbers at twice or three times their actual strength, fueling McClellan’s repeated calls for reinforcements and reluctance to act. Resigned when McClellan was forced out by Lincoln (which was probably just as well).

3. Daniel Sickles. Union general who lost his leg to a cannonball at Gettysburg, saved the shattered remains, and donated them to the Army Medical Museum... where he proceeded to visit them on the anniversary of the amputation for over a decade. Also, prewar, was the first to use the temporary insanity defense in a murder trial, after he shot and killed Philip Barton Key (Francis Scott Key's son!), who'd been shtupping Mrs. Sickles.

2. Harriet Tubman. Prewar, helped put together John Brown's crew/plan for Harper's Ferry. During the war, first a Union cook/nurse... then-- of course-- an armed scout/spy, who helped lead the raid at Combahee Ferry, freeing 700 slaves. Spoke out against Lincoln's reluctance to enforce emancipation in the southern states.

1. LINCOLN, MOTHERFATHER

Re: Rank It and Go

Apparently not.

A nicely shot noir piece, but the script jumped around a little too much for my taste. I have to say, my list leans way too much to latter-day productions. I initially had Sunset Boulevard, but my list went to 13 and had to be cut. I didn't realize I was cutting off the Golden Age almost in it's entirety. That's probably not ideal, though I kind of think Sullivan's Travels is over-rated, too.

Do you think the South made Pinkerton as a spy and he was being used to return misinformation back to McClellan?

to give the "golden age" its due, here are two "top 10 lists" (PLUS honorable mentions) of Hollywood movies about Hollywood; one is for pre-1990 films and the other post-1990:

Salsa
Chips (potato, tortilla, pita)
Crackers
Pretzels

Re: Rank It and Go

I've never been to Yosemite or Yellowstone or Denali. I suspect one of those three might move quickly to the top if I ever get around to seeing them. In the meantime:

1) Grand Canyon National Park. Yes, it's a cliché. But there's nothing on earth like it, or even remotely similar.

2) Zion National Park. Ledges. Rivers through cliffs. Sandstone. I went here with some friends after a company function in Las Vegas about seven years ago. They had to talk me down from a major panic attack when I noticed that I was walking along a narrow cliff ledge, right next to a thousand foot drop. But it was worth it, dammit. The bus ride into the park is mandatory, as I don't think they allow cars. And it's hokey. But the park is amazing.

3) Rocky Mountain National Park. Same friends, about eight years ago, similar company function in Denver. I had strained a muscle in my calf sprinting after a ping-pong ball during a party at Coors Field (fun fact - when the Rox are on the road, you can rent out Coors for a tour, food, drinks, and fun-n-games), but went hiking in RMNP anyway. And I'm glad I did. Lake Odessa is quite possibly the most beautiful place I've ever been, anywhere.

4) Harriman State Park. Some of this is sentimental. I joined a hiking club with a lodge in the middle of Harriman 11 years ago when I was at a particular low point, and it changed my life. So Harriman is special for personal reasons. But even if it weren't, I don't think there's anything that compares that's within an hour's drive of a major city.

5) Thingvellir National Park. You didn't specify US National Parks. The original home of the Icelandic Parliament straddles the North American and European continental plates. Between the two is Thingvellirvatn, where you can snorkel or scuba in 37 degree F water (you need to go on a tour to rent a wet suit that is the closest thing you'll ever have to a suit of armor). It's completely clear, as the water is too cold year-round to support life. So it's kind of like flying between cliffs. And it's a completely unassuming place...no park offices, no souvenir shops, no nothing, except a sign or two that reminds you where you are.

6) Petrified Forest. Like being on another planet, except with petroglyphs.

7) Adirondack State Park. I never know when I'm in the actual park or just somewhere in the Adirondacks, but it doesn't matter.

8) Acadia National Park. Downgraded a bit because Bar Harbor is a touristy slice of purgatory and the carriage trails are a little twee. But Cadillac Mountain is worth the trip. Get there early in the morning and be the first person in the continental US to see the sun come up!

9) Shenandoah National Park. I was home from college the summer of my junior year and getting sick of Staten Island, so I got in my orange Beetle and started driving. And wound up in Shenandoah National Park after a few days of visiting friends across Pennsylvania and Maryland. Took in the sights, pulled over and did some hiking here and there, stayed in a cheap motel near the VA/NC line, and came back almost ready to speak to my parents again.

10) Minnewaska State Park - the third New York state park on my list. New York state parks are awesome.

2) Shows cancelled too soon – FIREFLY - if there was only 1 show on the list, this would still be the answer;
3) Villainous sidekicks – Muttley (from WACKY RACKES); Sorry Natasha but Muttley was the best;
4) Lead guitarists – George Harrison - Um… hello?
5) Solo Beatles songs – “Imagine” (Lennon) – An anthem for a generation;
6) Black & white comedies – HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Hawks) – as fast, cynical and funny as ever;
7) Movie Villains – Hannibal Lecter (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) – how did we miss him?
8) Movies about Hollywood – SUSNSET BOULEVARD – the best one, not overlooked but actively rejected!
9) Classical music – “Adagio for Strings” (Barber) – still haunts me, from PLATOON;
10) Springsteen – “Born to Run” – Um… duh.

Alright, but i'm going to cheat a little.

1. Emilia Clarke / Lena Headley / Natalie Dormer (the women of "Game of Thrones") - I can't choose. Don't make me;
2. Morena Baccarin ("Gotham") - i've loved her since FIREFLY, and she just keeps getting hotter;
3. Grace Park ("Hawaii 5-0") - ditto BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, and ditto;
4. Kaley Cuoco ("Big Bang Theory") - i almost disqualified her for the short haircut, but i just couldn't;
5. Hayden Panatierre ("Nashville") - save the cheerleader, save the world;
6. Deborah Ann Woll ("Daredevil") - Hotter on TRUE BLOOD, but still... redhead. sorry, i can't resist;
7. Chloe Bennett ("SHIELD") - inhuman girl next door, mmmmm;
8. Laura Cohan ("Walking Dead") - even covered with gore, her features are perfect;
9. Kerry Washington ("Scandal") - i don't watch the show, but she's a knockout; and
10. Taylor Shilling / Laura Prepon ("Orange is the new Black") - i can only think of them together, and i think of them together ALOT.

honorable mentions: Angile Harmon, Lucy Liu, Sofia Vergara, Keri Russell, Kat Dannings, Mariska Hargitay. Also, if EXTANT hadn't been cancelled in 2015, Halle Berry would be at the top of the list. oh and i almost forgot Ruth Negga (from PREACHER). She's my newest crush. The girl can make a bazooka from household items and then fuck a vampire in the backseat of her car.

9) Tres Banditios in Columbia, Mo. It was across from the journalism school and had free chips on some days. When you are a college kid, you can nurse a Coke for a long time and eat a lot of chips.
10) Shakespeare's Pizza, also in Columbia, Mo. Where I courted the future Mrs. Mets Guy. I ordered some frozen pies delivered for an anniversary -- it was more than $20 to do that. But back in 1986, I loved that place and could afford it, too!

Wow, I obviously don't watch nearly enough television. I couldn't name 10 current TV actresses if my life depended on it. I only recognized 3 of the names (Kaley Cuoco, Angie Harmon and Lucy Liu) on MFS62's list. When I searched the names, the majority at least looked familiar to me, though I could never have named them, the character they play on TV, or the show on which they appear. Over the years, my television watching has decreased dramatically as I increasingly find less shows that interest me and consequently I now seldom even try new shows. I'm sure there are some good shows that would interest me, but I just take the time to find them.

Now back to the thread in progress and the question posed by MFS62: Name ten places you have visited that you would never want to to visit again.

I read the Power Broker and thought it was great. I'm looking forward to reading Caro's LBJ books, but I don't want to start until the last volume has been published. I don't want to have to wait through a George-Railroad-Martin-type delay between volumes.

Re: Rank It and Go

Solzhenitsyn, I think, is one of those people like John O'Hara - an excellent writer who gets downgraded for being an asshole in his personal life. One Day in the Life of Ivan Densiovich is worth reading and (I believe) can be downloaded online. Don't know if it's there in violation of copyright rules, though. It's only about 70 pages and can be read in a day or two.

I also found First Circle in a used bookstore when I was a teenager, probably around the time that Solz defected; it's another great book that depicts a brief period in gulag life in a cleanly written and unsentimental way. Also makes the charge of anti-semitism against him questionable - the main character's closest friend is clearly a secular Jew, and is pictured as one of the more honorable characters in the gulag.

Meantime, it doesn't look like anyone has ten embarrassing crushes.

Re: Rank It and Go

The official translation of One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich (which is well worth reading) is under copyright. There may be rogue translations that are free since the USSR didn't pay attention to copyright laws.

John O'Hara is indeed a great writer whose reputation got downgraded since his writing got worse the older the got. Had he stopped writing in his 30's he would be considered a giant.

John Updike wrote a number of great books. His four "Rabbit" books are well worth reading.

Nabokov is one of the great writers of all time. "Lolita" and "Pale Fire" would be on my short list of greatest novels of the 20th Century.

As far as Hardy, I read "The Mayor of Casterbridge" and liked it okay.

I read "The Scarlet Letter" in high school. Didn't like it much then.

Gogol: I got nothin'.

I realized that right after I added LA Woman. Boy those JM posthumous albums. Don't ever underestimate Ray Manzarek's penchant for the money-grab even though he's dead now. There were the six Doors album made and released while JM was alive (classic Doors). And probably twice as many compilations.

Re: Rank It and Go

Other Voices is a perfectly fine album. Morrison's contributions to the Door were overhyped. They were the Doors, not Jim Morrison and the other guys.

(I remember one article saying how Morrison was so good to his bandmates because he shared songwriting income from the hits he wrote in their early days. But their first big hit was "Light My Fire" -- written by Krieger).

The Doors collaborated on the composing of a lot of their songs, but Morrison always gets the credit.

'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was a pretty good swan song for S&G.
They worked together occasionally after that but any product released was strictly compilation type stuff or the odd Artie guest spot on a Paul song ... which often led to them feuding about something which in turn led to another lengthy estrangement.

1. Five Guys hamburger
2. Portillo's Chicago Hot Dogs --a small chain in Chicago that invented the definitive recipe. And Chicago hot dogs are far bigger in Chicago than Chicago pizza. All beef hot dog, with fresh relish, mustard, tomato, celery salt, sport peppers (a mildly hot pepper you can't find in the northeast), and dill pickle on a poppy seed bun.
3. Pepperoni Pizza (5 Corners)
4. Nathan's hot dogs
5. White Pizza
5. Wendy's hamburger (no cheese)
6. Sonic Chicago Dogs (Acceptable replacement for Portillo's; at least they get the recipe right)
7. Morette's King Steaks (a Schenectady institution)
9. Sausage Pizza
10. Whopper, Jr. (nice size for a snack).

there's only been around 10, and most have sucked to an almost unprecedented degree. The only two that didn't COMPLETELY suck are as follows:

1) BLUES BROTHERS - the original was enormously entertaining and a huge hit, but the sequel [BLUES BROTHERS 2000] was excremental;
2) WAYNE'S WORLD - ditto, and WAYNE'S WORLD 2, ditto;

If i were in a generous mood, i might give some begrudging credit to CONEHEADS and MAGRUBER for each having some hilarious moments.
But the others? I had to look them up:
- IT'S PAT
- STUART SAVES HIS FAMILY

Well there were movies "starring people who used to be on SNL" -- which is how MGiM put it -- and then there were those movies made from SNL skits.
The latter group certainly doesn't have a large roster to recommend. But the more general question can involve answers like TRADING PLACES (ex-SNL'ers x 2) or ANIMAL HOUSE or a whole host of Will Farrell or Tina Fey stuff for instance.
