Fuck Cancer!

Got a Sunday morning jolt this morning, my goddaughter's father has a big lump
in his neck and it's not good. He's having surgery on Friday. He's in the best shape
of all us homies and he gets dealt the C-card first. It's fucked up! Fuck cancer...

Having now lost two parents to cancer, it is my most fervent wish nobody else knows from it. All the best to your homey, Kase.

Re: Fuck Cancer!

Thanks, peoples! He had a PET-scan today and on Friday they're gonna take out
his tonsils and the lump. I imagine there will be a chemo and/or radiation treat-
ment after that. Did I mention Fuck Cancer?

Re: Fuck Cancer!

Thanks everyone. Talked to him yesterday and he's feeling better some. Tonsil
removal in middle aged people is very painful. They removed a section of his tongue
and something on his face in addition to the lump thing. Surgeon is confident that they
got everything early and he'll be starting radiation treatments shortly. Going to see him
next weekend and can't wait to slap a big bear hug on him.

Re: Fuck Cancer!

fuck cancer hard with a big fucking fuckstick.

there's a sweet little 7-year old boy that minimm grew up with in day care, who was recently diagnosed. it doesn't sound good, but y'know, hope and pray for the best. Its scary though, and i cannot imagine what he and his family could possibly be going through.

the kid is a massive ny rangers fan, and such a great kid. is there a chance that any among you might have an in with the rangers so that this kid could get a chance to meet his heroes?

Re: Fuck Cancer!

We ran low on funds in the middle of a recording series a few months back. My wife tends to disappear from the studio for months at a time, and when she returns, our engineer and guitarist is our best friend all over again. A labrador retriever of a man—excited to see you because your his best friend, whoever you are, and that track you just cut is my favorite track, whatever it is.

But now we're stunned to get the news second-hand through other musicians that he's pretty much on the clock. They found a growth in his esophagus and after a few rounds of chemo told him there was nothing to be done, to go home and get his affairs in order. We're calling every musician in town stupidly hoping that one of them has the story different.

We're going to go in and make some music next week (the studio is in the basement), because we have to go see him, but it's hard to just swing by with no more pretext than, "We just stopped in to see you because you're dying and that sucks and we hate ourselves for not seeing more of you."

He's a great guitarist, and a lot of his guitars were custom made by Danny Gatton, a legendary DC-area guitarist and luther who made axes for legends like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Steve Earl and Lonnie Mack, before dying himself 20 years ago. These guitars were museum pieces but he left them laying around and let me fool around with them in the studio and let people who used the studio all play them.

We don't know what to play, but music is what brought us together and that beats thinking about what's tearing us apart.

Here's a track he's playing some sweet and searing Allman Brothers-type lead on.

Re: Fuck Cancer!

Sorry to hear about your friend. One of the things that really sucks about getting older is that gatherings of family and friends use to be for graduations and wedding, but now later in life most of them are due to funerals. I'm tired of funerals.

Beautiful song with some fine guitar work. Cancer truly sucks.

Re: Fuck Cancer!

We barely got to see Dave when we went in to record. We even brought him some world-famous crabcakes from the world-famous crabcake place down the block from him. We were told we had to use the back door because they were keeping his house as germ free as possible, and he was zonked on painkillers and so, physically unable to even say hi. So we worked on the track, hoping a window of lucidity might open up sometime in the afternoon. After a few hours, we snuck upstairs, greeted his emaciated self on the couch as best as we could, he replied as friendly as he could, barely able to open his eyes, and then apologized, saying that he's so unable to sleep in general, that he couldn't afford to give up this zonk he was on. We said we loved him and snuck out quietly.

He apparently got the crabcakes, because sent a text three about hours later with one word: YUM :)

I'll take it. But geez. Last visits, if that's what this was, don't always work out like they do in the movies.

Re: Fuck Cancer!

I did the "last visit" about this time a year ago. If you get a smile -- even by text, after the fact -- you take it. The magic wand hasn't been invented yet, so you do what you can, and you take solace that it's appreciated. I know how sad this is, and you have my condolences (and so does your friend).

Thanks, he rocked. I feel guilty for eyeing some of his old guitarz.

Here's my Uncle Jim today, survivor of polio and asskicker of two different insidious forms of cancer, showing impressive form as he takes Independence Day first pitch honors at the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs game.

Good friend of ours is getting a double mastectomy tomorrow. Runs in
the family, it's low stage, and they feel it's the best course of action and
she's cool with it.

If anyone can kick cancer's ass, it's Lisa.
