At least that's the plan.

Mets right-hander Bartolo Colon will oppose Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa in a battle of rotation elder statesmen. Colon, who earned the win in the second game of a doubleheader against the Cardinals on Tuesday, will be starting on three days rest for the first time since 2005. The 43-year-old is not only the only pitcher older than 28 in the New York rotation but also the oldest player in baseball.

Prior to Saturday's game, the Mets will retire the number 31 worn by recent Hall of Fame inductee Mike Piazza, who played for the team from 1998-2005.

Is this the first number retired away from Shea? 1st Citi Field retirement?

Unless you count Ralphie's mic tribute, yes.

If his number was on the mic I'd have to consider it. Hey, why didn't they do that?

I didn't think Ruggiano could fall into my bad graces so quickly after such a phenomenal effort on that drive in the gap. Well, not bad graces. He just canceled the good buzz I had.

Re: IGT 07/30- Mets Retire 31 & Stave Off Rocky Sweep

I dig the 31 patch.
Having a big one on the cap is typical overkill, but in this case I like that too. I might be able to afford the cap.

Re: IGT 07/30- Mets Retire 31 & Stave Off Rocky Sweep

And just when you thought it was safe to go back to believing they might hit a little ... the pitcher with the near-6 ERA working on a high pitch count suddenly settles in and retires 7 straight NYM batters, most of them on weak pop-outs.

13 in a row down with nothing even resembling something that coulda, maybe, might be a hit during that stretch.

Does lil 'd really think it's wise to replant himself from behind the plate to the outside for the outside pitch? Who teaches this shit?

That really sucked. A 9th inning bomb would have been something to take away from this pathetic game.

Mets lost. Flores gets ripped off.
I'm pissed.

Meh, tryin to change it up a little. And this might have been the season spiraling down the drain, so I'm a tad beyond sad.

The Mets lost. I was really upset.

Re: IGT 07/30- Mets Retire 31

I also have to apologize for the IGT title (re:sweep). I thought this was the last game in the series. Now if that wasn't a jinx I don't know what is.

I don't know if removing that will do anything, but I'll try anything when it come's to the Mets.

Well, between an uberwarmly-received Fonzie appearance and "Home Sweet Home" as entrance music and Mike getting weepy again... the ceremony was nice.
