Oh yeah, me again on the IGT - Aug 1st, 2016

I almost forgot last time it was my turn too.

Yanx @ Mets, 7:10 PM, on your usual local station plus ESPN for youse outta-towners.

I don't believe any starting lineups have been posted yet because no one knows who is actually on which roster at this point so that's going to take a while to sort out.

We are pretty sure that it's still going to be Verrett vs Sabathia. C.C. Roider (probably not, but I couldn't resist the joke) is having a strange year and not just because he's sober for the first time in a while, but because he's alternated stretches of stinking and shining that make observers think that he's either done or back to his dominant days of yesteryear.
In a stretch running from May 4th thru June 10 Sabathia allowed [u:1o35k2yj]a total of 4 earned runs across 7 starts/44 innings[/u:1o35k2yj]. In the six starts since then he's coughed up 31 earnies in 42 innings.

I was watching the videos on the MLB AP, and hearing about Beltran. And -- how long have David Cone and Ken Singleton been broadcasting for the Evil Empire? Don't they have Al Leiter, too?

Ruggerino, he seems to have trouble with balls in deep center.

Singleton since forever ago, Cone more or less since he retired but only now and then. That booth has tended to be the lead p-b-p guy (Michael Kay) and a revolving cast of about nineteen different color guys.

Probably Eduardo Perez (son of HoF Cincy player Tony). Has kind of a deep voice slightly tinged with a Spanish accent.
Former pitcher Dallas Braden is the other ex-jock - the guy with the receding, curly hair if they show the booth. I forget who the p-b-p guy is, some nondescript ESPN staffer.

Whatever it was, we now have all three RH-hitting OFs not available, and on a night when Sabathia is pitching.

Their big [crossout:2n23dnj1]three[/crossout:2n23dnj1] one aside, I know nothing about who's in the Yanqui bullpen these days.
Throughout the years I've always at least been up on their roster with the exception of maybe the 24th/25th guys who tend to float in and out as circumstances dictate. But this entire year they've been shuffling guys in and out of that pen and the only thing they have in common is that I don't know a thing about any of them nor could I pick even one out of a lineup.

I don't get what you're saying here. It's what they always have done. As long as there is a beast called a "closer." They wouldn't/couldn't be "closers" if they did not pitch the ninth — the closing inning.

As soon as it was tied I would have changed my strategy to be prepared for extra innings. And that would change the entire set up. And sure, sometimes you will have to turn to arms that are bottom end. I would hold back the closer as long as I possibly could and try to get him in that position. At a certain point tho even that plan goes down the drain.

He looked like he didn't know where the ball was going, and he threw a bunch of pitches, but I'd've stuck with Familia in the ninth.

So either you use Familia in a tie game or you resolve not to use him at all.

Why can't we use him in the 10th and walk off in our half. Or the 11th?
Ain't gonna happen tonight.

How, by the way, did they not shelve Cabrera to the DL to get another bat for the bench? Are they too cheap to pay for airfare? I know Bruce will be here tomorrow, but still.

Re: Oh yeah, me again on the IGT - Aug 1st, 2016

The pitching moves -- Several here seem to be upset about them tonight but I'm not all that clear on what the fuss is.

- Verrett went 5, Goeddel pitched the 6th.
- Goeddel was then PH'd for (by Matz) which kept the inning alive as the Mets eventually loaded the bases before Walker FO w/a chance to bust it open (how many times this season have we paid for runs they failed to tack on?)
- Robles pitched the 7th

** Here's where I guess part of the beef is: Terry starts top 8 w/Blevins to face the two top of the order LHBs Gardner & Ellsbury. He walked one, got the other. THEN he went to Reed.
The other two options there were either continue with Robles to start the inning or go directly to Reed. That would 'save' Blevins for later although if you don't want him tainting the 8th inning vs their hot LHBs I'm not sure when would be a good time to use using him later on. Blevins walking Gardner was unfortunate but so was Reed giving up two two-out hits and a line-out with a wild pitch mixed in.
I don't think going to Blevins there was the ONLY move but I see the logic in it and certainly don't see it as evidence of feeble-mindedness. I would more likely have let Robles start the 8th but, as good as Reed's been lately, there'd be all kinds of shit coming TC's way if that backfired.

- Then there's the Familia / Lugo argument but I don't what else to say about that. Not only will there never be a NYM lead for JF to protect but the idea of using Lugo and saving Familia makes little sense to me. Not only is that deciding NOT to use your supposed best reliever in a tied 9th inning but, as a one or at best two inning guy, if you save him for later and the game's still tied after his inning(s), then what?

Re: Oh yeah, me again on the IGT - Aug 1st, 2016

Knowing you were short in the bullpen I'd have pitched Robles for two innings. That leaves you both Blevins and Reed if you need them. Getting left with nothing but Seth Lugo was ridiculous. Terry gets locked into his bullpen roles so Addison Reed must pitch the 8th inning every night, it seems.

This is the second time in a week that the Mets wasted a dramatic come-from-behind home run in a loss.

I'm just not feeling it with this team. They find too many ways to lose.

If they could have held the lead, it would have been a second comeback win in a row with a deficit-to-lead HR.

I was hoping for some magic to believe in...but this team seems to be running on fumes.

Less so last night but very much so over the weekend, the club almost seemed like a Jerry Manuel team, where the lack of confidence in itself was palpable. I mean I know it ultimately comes down to the talent on the field/bench (or lack of it) but on some level feeeeeeeelings matter too. Not good for us.

Re: Oh yeah, me again on the IGT - Aug 1st, 2016

Last night was interesting at least, because the junior hitters were doing much of the damage. I think it's sort of a secondary goal — after winning the whole enchilada — for the 2016 Mets to transition the character of their offense, from being defined by the 30-somethings to being defined by the 20-somethings. And if that works, it can put them in a position to contend every year going forward. It's sort of like last season, they phased out Niese and Gee and and introduced Syndergaard and Matz.

That was obviously a more successful change-on-the-fly, but there's still time.

I just get the feeling that we'll regret the Bruce trade. As in, his numbers will fall off the cliff.

I believe that scientifically it's known as Roberto Alomar Syndrome. Good players that come to the Mets and instantly become Eric Campbell clones.

Hope I'm wrong. Fear I'm right.
