Wednesday is Colón Night, the night in the rotation that seemingly has given the team the best chance of hammering out a win. It wasn't supposed to be this way, but is. Arizona is the only one of the 30 active MLB franchises that Colón hasn't scored a win against so adding to whatever résumé he hopes to turn in to the Hall of Fame at the end of his career is a little added motivation for the big galoot. The Neil Diamondbacks counter with left-hander Robbie Ray, so an added bonus is a possible debut by right-handed TJ Rivera, perennial .300 hitter in minor leagues across the USA.

I suppose one could make a case for Loney to stay in even though the Snakes are throwing a LHP, but Flores hits them particularly well so it's certainly a reasonable day to give him the 1B job. Other than that, the only real 'regular' sitting because it's a lefty is Conforto and his 5-for-46 against them pretty much makes Terry's case. As for the rest who aren't in the lineup card but ideally should be, well Terry has other reasons for not writing in Yeonis & Juan & Asdrubal & David.

I'm not getting the money angle here. Gomez would have been slightly cheaper last year than was 'Plan B' in Cespedes and was under control for this season at about 1/3 of what they wound up paying Cespedes. Plus he would have been targeted as the everyday CF for 2016 which would have freed them to trade Lagares during the off-season and get out from under his escalating contract. So if the story is that they balked on Gomez because they were unwilling or unable to take on his contract, the evidence to support it is very thin.

Speaking of long games (as the crew was earlier) - this is now a 3-hour game seeing as how they started right about 7:30 with the rain delay. But up in Boston there was no delay so they started at the regular time. It's 6-4 Yanquis ... and they're in the [u:apgw5w8m]7th inning[/u:apgw5w8m].

Did you guys see what happened when some guy got his first ML hit the other day? I forget who it was but the fielder dutifully tossed the ball into the dugout for the keepsake ... but he forgot to call time first so all runners moved up two bases. I was hoping for that here.

No team is stepping up to claim it and yet they're losing touch with that group. 7 of the last 11 losses have been by 1 run (one other by 2) including twice in extra innings, and during those games they've gone a whopping 11 for 84 w/RiSP. But they're not.
