having a great year bit like found money. SHaMs unfortunately don't need him.

You're going to throw in the towel when we are close to a wild card? I know it's been a bleak week and the injuries are mounting. But you still gotta believe, no?

Yes. Trade Walker, too. Start shaping the 2017 roster.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

So this is future help we're looking for here rather than present because, make no mistake, losing Reed would hurt the team over the next 60 games (and beyond?).

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

Currently injured (indefinitely): Wright, Harvey, Duda
Currently injured (significantly): Reyes, Lagares, Cabrera
Currently playing hurt (in diminished fashion): Matz, Cespedes (and Syndergaard?)

AND the folks who are healthy enough to play are slumping, while the Nats and others keep putting themselves more squarely/securely between us and the playoffs.. AND AND they have little of the farm surplus they had last year to make any impact deal (and barely enough to, say, deal for a relief upgrade).

If they're not sellers at this point, then they should be.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

im just looking at the hauls the MFYs are getting and thinki g maybe we ought to see. You have to figure Bastardo cannot be moved, may as well promote him or Robles to the Reed role. part of this is my inherent distrust of relief pitching in general, part despair watching these guys flail.

They should be sellers, but it's probably too late now.

Not to endorse this particular trade, but I generally believe that relief is a luxury and its success is ephemeral. Never cling too tightly too it.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

The 2016 Mets have the same record as the 2015 Mets after 104 games. It feels like we have been watching the same team.

Can lightening strike twice? Consecutively? I guess it can, but what are the odds?

Well, there's no chance when you throw in the towel. Last year wasn't just about Cespedes, but the hurt guys coming back. How far away is Duda? We know Wheeler is about three weeks out.

When you are in a position to go for it, you go for it. Because you don't know when you'll ever get this close again.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

Problem is, we're not "this close."

Problem also is, you can't count on either Duda or Wheeler, given the setbacks they've already had; also, we're not getting Wright back, or another d'Arnaud back, nor a Cespedes-sized (or, it seems, a Uribe-sized or Johnson-sized) reinforcement.

The Pirates sold Melancon for players who will likely help a little this year, but a lot going forward. Similar moves concerning Reed (or Walker, e.g.) might be a prudent way to go. Build absurd depth now, and gird against a similar situation next year. (Hell, if they'd signed guys like Pearce and Kelly Johnson in a belt-and-suspenders way this offseason, they'd have been better off from Day 1.)

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

I was just curious if the 'Trade-Reed' brigade was looking for this-season help at another position or was punting entirely on '16 and looking for future goods.

One thing about Reed which I had either forgotten or never knew is that he's still only arb-eligible at the end of the year.
True that would make him more attractive on the trade market but also makes him more attractive to hang onto. If we dealt away Reed it seems to me we'd be wanting to land a Reed this winter.

If Familia gets hurt -- and heck, the way things are going this year -- Reed's the backup closer, I think.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

Sure, but but backup closers are a luxury. If he gets traded, somebody else becomes the backup. It's not like the relief pitcher depth chart doesn't go 10 deep. And it's not like Familia himself didn't get the job after himself opening the season as the team's fourth option.

Currently almost one in three. It's a tough call.

It doesn't have to be lightning. It could be a tornado or a comet or a mudslide.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

I keep going back and forth on this. Last year I felt like we were a player or two away.

This year, not so much. I think it's because the starting pitching has taken a big step back.

I dunno. I think you're close enough that you have to go for it. Second wild card is still well within reach. Make the playoffs. See what happens.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

I think the starting pitching still looks pretty great. Better relative to the league than they were at this time last year, I would imagine.

I think the team's flaws almost begin and end with plating runners.

Yeah, you're probably right. Anyway, they are clearly going for it with the Bruce acquisition.

Let's win this thing then.

Yes, my attitude was a bit facetious here, if they weren't going to improve the club with batzzz, may as well shop the attractive assets.

Now looks like they might get Bruce and Lucroy

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

I wouldn't throw in Dilson Herrera. I wouldn't throw in Danny Herrera. And I wouldn't send them d'Arnaud straight up.

Jonathan Lucroy is just Jonathan Lucroy. Let's not buy him on impulse just because they've displayed him next to checkout counter and our blood sugar is low.

Re: Let's trade Addison Reed

when did Jonathan Lucroy become "just Jonathant Lucroy"? I missed the memo. A 2-way catcher in his prime, with a reasonable contract for this and next season. I like Herrera but he's potential ... actually, he's "just" potential. Lucroy is actual production. I have absolutely no confidence in d'Arnaud ever becoming anything, and we've got other middle infield prospects (including Flores, who's here already). The only way the Bruce deal makes sense is if they do the Lucroy deal, too. If we weren't doing either of those deals, then i too would support a Reed trade. But if we're actually going for it, then we need him this season.

2015, man. He's turning into a pumpkin starting tomorrow.

We have a well rounded francophonic catcher on the wax. I'm not falling for one on the wane.
