Cespedes headed to the DL

Re-tweaked his leg in his final AB.
So much for the five game DL stint that would allow him to heal.

Taking bets on Jay Bruce's DL listing. Will it come before his first NYM hit?

Golf.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

Shoulda been DL-ed weeks ago.

The Mets have been hamstrung by injuries this season, but they have also been monumentally bad at managing those injuries and putting a fully healthy 25-man roster in the dugout each day.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

Agree that he should have gone on the DL before, but the move was at least defensible at the time. I think everyone thought he'd be back in a few days.

I think the bigger mistake was when it was apparent he wasn't better, he should have been DL'ed retroactively instead of trotting him out there and letting the injury linger.

I think the decision not to DL Wright still takes the cake for the most idiotic move the Mets made (or failed to make) this season.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

Gotta question his commitment to his job and getting better if he has been indeed
out there playing golf on game days. He should have been working to get back to 100%
on the baseball field and not trying to shave a point or two of his golf score.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

I sure am reluctant to making a big deal out of a whispering campaign about what a guy does in his leisure time, but it's the second time he's got hit with a key injury in the late innings of a game after illustrated reports of him spending the morning on the links, leaving the Mets in the rough.

key phrase there is 'illustrated reports'

he plays golf ALL THE TIME. The media just likes to paint a picture.

That he could play golf and theoretically walk without pain is just more evidence for the idea that the Mets were probably right to take the gamble that he could play and DH through it.

When he initially hurt it the Mets had Granderson hitting decently, Lagares maybe not horrible and that's about it. They needed outfielders. It's not like if they DL'd him and brought up Nimmo and his .616 OPS he would've won them more games.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

I'm not, making a big deal about anything, just giving one man's opinion. If I was
auditioning for a multi-year contract after not being able to get one last year (after
a phenominal display of team carrying) I'd want to be on the field to do so. Playing
golf when banged up is probably not the most prudent thing to do. But whatever, he
is what he is...

Yeah, sorry. I'm not characterizing you, so much as myself, suggesting, "I'm hesitant to make a big deal out of this, but it may be a big deal."

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

Pardon my-- y'know what? Don't pardon a thing. FUCK whisper campaigns. Bone-loss sufferers with rheumatoid arthritis can play golf. It's not like it requires no athleticism, but it doesn't require high-stress physical activity. Frankly, I'd be more concerned about his taking a flight of stairs with too much giddyup.

I called for a Cespedes DL a week ago but FK shot me down.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

This must be more of a thing than I'm aware of. I'm not tuned into whisper
campaigns of any sort; I posted on my own based on one or two mentions of
golf sprinkled with a> being a little annoyed that I was saying he should be
DL'd for seemingly weeks and b> I feel Cespedes is a bit willy-nilly with the
me first-team second and c> the, well, I'm gonna start repeating myself so
I guess I'm done...

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

In an in game interview a couple of weeks ago Terry said they would have to use Cespedes carefully because the Mets could not afford to lose his bat.

Well played.

Well, if 'asking a question' (one you didn't answer btw) equals 'shot you down', then yes, and it was because I'm not big on DL'ing guys and therefore guaranteeing that they'll miss at least 15 days based on the idea that the injury might progress to the point where they have to miss those games. And I'm especially not anxious to do it when coming up on a stretch of games where there's a specific role for him which would take some of the strain off the leg, keep the best bat in the lineup at a time when they're desperate for offense, and still give playing time to the others in our suddenly crowded outfield.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

Sandy's all Yeah, we probably should have DL'd him earlier, and yeah, enough with the golf.

Buried in the bottom of that piece is that the concern with Taijeron is his high strikeout rate.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

In retrospect, Alderson acknowledged the Mets should have placed Cespedes on the DL when the injury originally occurred.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that maybe not-placing Ces on the DL for, y'know, months constitutes a bigger dereliction of duty than his putting in the occasional 18 holes.

Well, it wasn't months and it wasn't occasional, so we need to review the math.

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

Okay. Strike, and revise to "more than a month." Golf didn't cause his injury, and it almost certainly didn't exacerbate it. MY RIGHTEOUS MAD-ON CONTINUES, UNABATED!

Re: Cespedes headed to the DL

I don't really get why there is such a rift, opinion wise, in the golf thing. It's done,
he's gone, hopefully he'll come back well healed and he knocks a stroke or two off
his game while he's 'rehabbing.'
