Matz = Warren Mulaney

"He's at the top of my crumb list! In fact, he's at the bottom of my crumb list, too. And he's every crumb in-between!"

Of all the terrible things that happened last night, Matz pissing away a lead and a tie in 3 short innings has to have been the worst. WE KNOW we struggle to score as much as we ought to, and don;t execute offensively, and disappear for innings at a time. But Matz makes me the maddest. He's basically become the player I dislike the most on the club. I hate Teixera as much as the next guy, maybe more, but how about getting the guy out. He's hitting like 170.

Fuck you, Matz. You crumb.

Funny, I was thinking the exact same thoughts, but directing them at Hansel Robles. Though that last run came in on a wussy infield hit that a good shortstop would have had a shot at. So maybe there's some hat for Flores, too, who wasn't much help at shortstop and also managed to make six outs in four at bats. And then there's Jay Bruce. Nuff said.

So many "fuck yous" to go around for last night's game.

Matz, at least, got himself together. I got home in the middle of the third and didn't see the six runs he gave up, which is maybe why I'm feeling more charitable towards him.

Re: Matz = Warren Mulaney

Maybe its just body language but Matz comes off to me as petulant, forever feeling sorry for himself, and often unable to do anything right when things aren't going well for him. Frustrating to watch start to start, and his unreliability becoming a real issue for the club. Couple bad losses on him for that kinda shit already.

Robles we know is an irascible mother, and as reliever probably more suited to get away with that demeanor. But he also seemed way out of line last night. Flores didn't/couldn't get it done physically, I don;t put much of that on his character.

Re: Matz = Warren Mulaney

I personally think Matz played a little over his head last year...which was great for the 2015 Mets, but it has probably raised overall expectations for him to something that he may not be able to compete with right now. Especially, if he is playing through pain.

Really, we may end up adding Matz to the list of players with injuries that the Mets have tried to ignore until it becomes too much for the player to bear. If his pain is effecting his ability to pitch well, then the Mets need to strongly consider shutting him down.

I don't know if that is truly the case and I'm sure the team and Matz will deny it in perpetuity...but it certainly wouldn't surprise me. He looks to me like a guy who has lost some confidence. I'm not convinced it's a natural ability issue as much as a playing with pain (indirectly influencing his ability) issue.

Re: Matz = Warren Mulaney

Matz is like the anti-deGrom out there, totally unable to work out of trouble once something goes wrong. Not only was that Teixeira's first RH HR of the year but that whole inning started with 2-outs and none on. He started the 1st inning with a 3-pitch K too but then still managed to give up the 2-run lead.
That the lead wasn't bigger was of course not his fault but maybe it got to him. Bottom line is that there was essentially a seven AB span which took the score from potentially plus 4 or 5 in our favor to down 1.
Conforto - K, Flores - GiDP. Then, following the 3-pitch Ellsbury K: Single - Walk - Double - K - Double

It's like that, in addition to the botched add-on runs, he got mad that the singles -- both the one after the Ellsbury K in the 1st and then the two which followed the first two outs in front of the
Teixeira HR in the 2nd -- were kind of dinky and as a result got all flustered over it.

-- That late infield hit w/bases loaded is actually the one play I DON'T blame Flores for. There were, however, a couple of early ones that I think a better SS maybe gets to.

-- Robles was being stupid but, yeah, it's an isolated incident as far as we know.

This is the read I used to get off of Ron Darling.

I feel like deGrom has been grinding half this season. But somehow, grinding his way to success.

Holy hell, guys... have you had bone spurs yet?

Some guys can pitch decently through pain. VERY few guys can pitch the same way they did pre-pain, even fewer precisely so.

It's a well-known FACT that Warren Mulaney had extremely painful bone spurs but still stuck through two blue-ball dates with Marcia Brady before hitting it off with her cheerleading rival.

This is what I hated about Jon Niese. Is it a lefty thing?

Agreed also. Matz can breeze through some innings, then hit a bump in the road and just. not. be. able. to. get. out. of. it. It's frustrating to watch. That second inning he gets the first two outs and then before you know it, three runs.

Meanwhile the Mets have bases loaded and no outs, the pitcher on the ropes, and they go strikeout, double play. It's pathetic.

Boy, Marcia was hot even in a cardigan.

It was as though he has been reading the John Niese playbook.
