Quiz: Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Edgy MD
Aug 24 2016 09:15 PM

A quiz to suss out and celebrate those Mets who were consistently effective, over an extended period, while never being excellent.

Name me the Mets top ten pitchers all-time in terms of wins, discounting any who have represented the Mets on a National League All-Star roster.

Re: Quiz: Slow and Steady Wins the Race

One guess per post. No consecutive posts. Three points for a correct guess. Minus one for an incorrect guess.

On edit: Hell, let's make it interesting. A VALUABLE GRAND PRIZE for the ultimate winner.

Trax comes to mind, although not sure if he snuck into an ASG once or twice.

That's who I was gonna say.

Craig Swan, who was definitely all-star caliber during his 78-79 peak. (Those were also J.R. Richard's peak years). I disagree with the "never being excellent" phrasing as it applies to Swan.

Missed it by that much!

Terry Leach, like Craig Swan before him, probably deserved an All-Star selection. He had a great first half as a fill-in starter in 1987, but Davy Johnson just couldn't mentally let go of the "fill-in" modifier and didn't choose him. Terry is tied with Mlicki at 24 wins, 22nd on our list.

Trachsel, Gentry, Maine, Lynch: winningest Met pitchers who were neither Met All-Stars NOR Met Opening Day starters. Maine did start the opener of the 2006 playoffs, though, and Lynch was being held as emergency starter in case Seaver, who aggravated a body part (and I don't mean that dick M.
