Quiz: Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Edgy MD Aug 24 2016 09:15 PM |
A quiz to suss out and celebrate those Mets who were consistently effective, over an extended period, while never being excellent.

One guess per post. No consecutive posts. Three points for a correct guess. Minus one for an incorrect guess.

Trax comes to mind, although not sure if he snuck into an ASG once or twice.

Mike Pelfrey. Hung around long enough, never as good as he shoulda been but had his moments.

Bobby Ojeda should've been an All-Star in 1986...but wasn't.

That's who I was gonna say. Craig Swan, who was definitely all-star caliber during his 78-79 peak. (Those were also J.R. Richard's peak years). I disagree with the "never being excellent" phrasing as it applies to Swan.

[fimg=150]https://i.ytimg.com/vi/sBlhrTpi69E/maxresdefault.jpg[/fimg] Missed it by that much! Terry Leach, like Craig Swan before him, probably deserved an All-Star selection. He had a great first half as a fill-in starter in 1987, but Davy Johnson just couldn't mentally let go of the "fill-in" modifier and didn't choose him. Terry is tied with Mlicki at 24 wins, 22nd on our list. 1. Trachsel: 66 (10th all-time on the Mets win List) 2. Niese: 61 (Tied for 11th) 3. Swan: 59 (Tied for 13th) 4. Ojeda: 51 (15th) 5. [fimg=150]http://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/35/590x/Tina-571090.jpg[/fimg] YOU'RE SIMPLY THE BEST! Jack finishes the board! He departed as (I think) the Mets' all time winningest pitcher, and was still in the top ten into the eighties. He remains 28th all time in Met wins, but with NO ALL-STAR APPEARANCES!! Thank you for playing! 1. Trachsel: 66 (10th all-time on the Mets win List) 2. Niese: 61 (Tied for 11th) 3. Swan: 59 (Tied for 13th) 4. Ojeda: 51 (15th) 5. Pelfrey: 50 (16th) 6. Jackson: 43 (21st) 7. Trachsel, Gentry, Maine, Lynch: winningest Met pitchers who were neither Met All-Stars NOR Met Opening Day starters. Maine did start the opener of the 2006 playoffs, though, and Lynch was being held as emergency starter in case Seaver, who aggravated a body part (and I don't mean that dick M. Donald a Grant) late in Spring 1983 couldn't go. Lynch predicted he wouldn't be Greeted warmly by the Shea throng if had he taken Tom's anticipated place.
