Portable Media Thread

There was some discussion here some time ago (I can't find it so I might be
conflating with a fb post) about replacing an old dying iPod with something new
and more modern. I'm not interested in returning to an Apple device.

(I think it was seawolf who had the dying (or dead) iPod? Any suggestions?

I don't listen to music so I'm hardly the expert here, but why is your phone not good enough?

Re: Portable Media Thread

I don't know, and maybe I could/should. My iPod was 60GB and about 3/4's full.
My phone is 16GB and about 3/4's full. So there's a storage issue. I'm not too phone
savvy but I can probably increase my storage? I have Galaxy 5 something, I think
at some point you said you have the same or similar but that was awhile back.

The other thing is a I assume that the quality of sound is better on a device made
solely for for music but I could be wrong. I have a pair of Bose earbuds that make
most things (laptop, portable AM radio, etc.) sound pretty good regardless of source.

Just asking, I know someone brought it up in our circle at some point not too long ago.

Re: Portable Media Thread

i'm up to the Galaxy s7, but the 5 does have an microsd slot. You can get a 64 gb (hell, probably a 128) for pretty cheap (less than $20) and toss it in there and go.

Quality is inherently the file itself and the headphones.

Most people these days seem to stream. I uploaded all my music to Google Music and I never listen to it. Google Music also gives me "I feel lucky?" radio station that definitely plays things that aren't in my library. I think Amazon prime allows unlimited storage, though I don't know what the playback is like from there, and of course streaming has some data costs associated with it if you're not regularly on wifi.

Unless you're just looking for a device you can beatup a bit/workout with not worry about battery and breakage and what not, but even then you can probably buy something like an old Galaxy S3 and toss that external sd card in it and do the same. Wifi will still work. You could tether to your phone for wifi if you really needed too.

Re: Portable Media Thread

It was me on FB. I've had a 160GB iPod Classic for about six years, and various iterations of mp3 players before that. I replaced it recently with another iPod -- rather than going with some sort of streaming service/app on my phone -- for a few reasons:

1) Data charges. I don't need to nor want to be connected to a streaming service when I'm listening to music, which is primarily when I'm in the car.
2) My collection. I've got a bunch of bootlegs and other live things on there, and other things that aren't on any of the services.
3) I like supporting the artists I like. I'd rather spend ten bucks directly on the new Butch Walker record next week rather than have him get a billionth of a cent every time I play one of his songs.
4) Comfort level. I'm 40 and I'm just too set in my way of using my device the way I do -- playlists, shuffling, etc. -- and I don't have the time or energy to learn a new system right now.

Re: Portable Media Thread

Wouldn't a nice 128gb sd card in your phone accomplish all that, with perhaps a slight different UI depending on your phone, overcome the inconvenience of having to carry around another device?

Re: Portable Media Thread

I had the Apple classic IPOD. That player had the most memory, by far. I had around 10,000 songs, or even more on the device. And then it broke. The same week that Apple announced it was discontinuing the classic IPOD. I miss it and haven't replaced it.

Possibly? But now that my new car has an iPod hookup, I rarely carry the device around much. Just in and out of the house when I need to download new stuff.

Re: Portable Media Thread

My ipod fell out of my pocket during a snowstorm and I never found it. Tried to use my phone which kind of sucks since there isn't nearly the storage space and I don't want to have to shuffle things in and out. I am against streaming services For the same reasons as Seawolf (particularly reason No. 3). The net effect is that I am pretty much not listening to music on the subway any more. Which turns out to be a good thing. I read and listen in other's conversations or sometimes talk with real people.

Looks like some CPFer's need to start a vinyl collection.

I stream and buy vinyl. Importing and syncing devices with my collection is tiresome. I don't own a lot of specialty stuff, so streaming works for me. The best of the best gets added my vinyl collection (if available - most of what I like is). Collecting vinyl can be expensive, so I try to only include what I really enjoy...but it generally gives some cash back to the artist.

i still have a 1st gen ipod lying around somewhere. i never got the hand of carrying it everywhere.

Big stream supporter here. the mobile version of deezer is actually better than the web but im trying to get by until the new Pandora ondemand lauches later this year.

Pandora bought all the tech/design talent from rdio which was a GREAT product, rip.

Re: Portable Media Thread

Thanks for all the input.

Ceets: I think I'm married to my G5 for awhile and yes I can get a sd card pretty cheap.
I might get one for the hell of it but it's the end of the line for that option but it would be
nice to have on phone for music and pics.

I agree the headphones make a big difference. I got my Bose earbuds years ago with a
gift card and it was my best gift card gift ever.

I don't want to stream, I wanna rock! We're already testing our data limits monthly between
four devices and pay too much as it is.

seawolf: I'm with you on comfort level, especially playlists. I have a stereo (one with like
wires and stuff) in my garage and I like blasting playlists when bbq'ng with friends and stuff.
What iPod did you get? I think that's going to be my eventual landing point. Also, and this
drives me nuts, I think some of the albums bought on Apple Store or whatever it's called
these day have user counts that date back to whenever and I need to use them on an iPod?
I'm so lost on this subject it makes my head spin.

Re: Portable Media Thread

In theory, all the mp3s you've downloaded from wherever should be playable through iTunes, and you should be able to use iTunes on any computer -- I'm on a PC -- to maintain your library. I get stuff from iTunes/Amazon/wherever, and dump them all into iTunes. Then I sync them to my player.

I bought a reconditioned iPod Classic again to replace the old one. (And the old one, oddly, suddenly started working again, so I'm considering just returning this one I bought since it has a 30-day return.) I need the space; I have over 100GB of files that won't fit on a Touch. Plus I feel like the Classic is sturdier; I'm not worried about shattering the screen.

I've considered going vinyl -- I have a turntable that has a digital output so I can connect it to my computer -- but I just haven't gone that far because I don't have the time and energy to do it right. I'm going to just buy the mp3s on Friday, then a shirt on the 29th at Irving Plaza because if Butch is in town, I'm THERE.
