First NASCAR event

My employer is the title sponsor of a race this weekend, so I get to go and serve as a host. I'm excited, but know very little about NASCAR. What should I expect?

Crowds, noise, cars driving fast in a circle.
That's about it.
Oh yeah. And Beer. Lots and lots of beer.

Guys turning left.
If you see someone turning right it's a sign that something's gone terribly wrong.

Your shower will take over an hour.

I have to say, it was a lot of fun.

Now, granted, being the title sponsor and having a suite makes everything better. But I was amazed at the access fans have to the pits and the track itself. You are allowed to walk right onto the track in the hours before the race, and people were signing the finish line.

Our box was near the pits, and it was really interesting to see the crews in action during the race. We had some special access and it was a thrill to be in the winner's circle as the driver was doing donuts on the infield and pulled into the circle amid the confetti storm. I was able to be in the trophy presentation photo!

Amazingly, people had been camping at the track since Monday. There might be drinking involved.

I picked up some race-used lugnuts. And my ears are still ringing. But this was a good day.

Writers and other media folks who cover NASCAR, particularly the ones who aren't regulars but just parachute in for the occasional big race, often talk in amazement about the almost unfettered access they're allowed with the drivers, about how they've chatted with them during the stroll to their cars literally minutes before the start of a race that's going to see them going 180 mph for the next few hours. They then inevitably compare that to the NFL where the club might allow you access to Tom Brady during a 12 minute window on Wednesday afternoon, but only as a part of a monitored group setting and with handlers all over the place ready to deflect any question where an answer could be construed as straying too close to giving away state secrets or, y'know, might be remotely interesting.

I hope you at least saw some trashy white girls taking their tops off to impress hillbillies. #MURICA

But they do have a pretty good idea. The drivers wear shirts that show the names of the companies that sponsor them.
I wish politicians would do the same.
