Vince Velasquez vs Robert Gsellman -- 1:10 (only 7 day games left after today) Velasquez started off his first full season (55 IP w/Houston last year) great, beginning with a 6-inning/3-hit game vs the Mets on April 9 (a 1-0 Philly win) and following that up with a complete game 3-hit/16-K performance vs SDP. But lately, not so good: 9, 5, & 5 earned runs in his last three games, those 19 runs came in just 16.1 innings on 29 hits and 8 HRs with 5 BBs thrown in, although he did strikeout 23 in the process. On our side, this is the first of (at least!) three consecutive games with a trainee on the mound. Not sure why that fact calls for a Cespedes-less game but at least so far there's no word that broken body parts or major surgery is involved, although he was PH'd for late in Saturday's affair. 4 - Cesar Hernandez 8 - Odubel Herrera 5 - Mikael Franco 3 - Tommy Joseph 9 - Aaron Altherr 7 - Jimmy Paredes 2 - AJ Ellis 6 - Freddy Galvis 9 - Vince Velasquez 5 - Jose Reyes 6 - Asdrubal Cabrera 4 - Kelly Johnson 9 - Jay Bruce (or some faint copy of him) 7 - Curtis Granderson 8 - Alejandro De Aza 3 - James Loney 2 - Travis d'Arnaud 1 - Robert Gsellman

Loney doesn't make that play, there's a good chance the Mets are playing catchup ball most or all of the afternoon.

So here are the in-game injuries from just the past week. Tuesday - Niese removed in bottom 1st Thursday - Lugo after the end of the 5th Friday - Ruggiano after the 5th Saturday - Cespedes in the bottom 7th, then Walker at the end of the 8th Sunday - Cabrera in bottom 1 ... and maybe more to come, who knows! And let's look at Ruggiano's year while we're at it: - gets 4 ABs with Texas on opening day and gets sent down - gets 175 ABs in AAA then is released - gets signed by the Mets but goes on the DL after 6 ABs - comes off the DL but then goes back on 14 ABs later for a different injury

Those are some weird numbers. Batted a paltry .173, but a really fat .173 — with 44% of his hits going for extra bases, and had a big fat .127 walk rate also.

They blew some chances early, but then again the Phils might have blown even more. I was thinking of proactively pulling Gsellman after six innings even though he was sailing at that point, and probably would have had advocated for it ahead of time if Robles and, to a lesser extent, Reed been their pre-August selves. BMFC wanted to fire Terry when he did bring in Robles; two days ago CF wanted him fired for NOT bringing him in. Sometimes you just can't win. Of course it the rules of baseball allowed managers to bring in closers in the 7th inning if that's where the biggest fire occurs then maybe TC would have been able to go to a different choice. But the bottom line is they totaled one walk today despite a ton of full counts plus a whopping seven hits, all of them singles and most of them in the early innings. Can't win 'em all but they've put themselves in a position where they have to win most and, going into Miami then Washington with unproven pitchers and Jose Fernandez starting off, this would have been a nice one to have. Pitt won, SF is winning, Dodgers in a scoreless tie mid-game. Wash, Miami, & StL lost so the day isn't a total disaster.

But even after d'Arnaud ended the inning I was thisclose to calling for him to not start the 7th anyway - and had the bench not been short today and Robles not been lost at sea lately I would have. I don't normally advocate for pulling a guy pitching well in favor of one who may or may not have his good stuff that day but in this case -- between being Gs's first ML start, pitch count getting up there, third time through the lineup, etc. -- I thought giving him the 7th was tempting fate.

And if not, well, you might be tempted to immediately pull him after the first hit, or the second, rather than the third. Granderson was chasing a lot of balls out there in the seventh inning.
