IGT 9/12/16: NYM@WAS -- The Rafael With It

G-Fafif

The second Wild Card-holding Mets travel to the nation's capital to send a message to those first-place pointyheaded bureaucrats. Rafael Montero and Mat Latos are your starters, as unlikely as that sounds when stripped of context.

Let's Go Mets, of course.

So who was for pinch-hitting for him in the top of the second.

I wasn't paying attention at the time, but that would have been cool, decisiveness-wise.

Washington getting some pitcher attrition of their own.

With the tying run on 2nd Id be okay with that as well.

But I know TC. He wants to know if Montero can find it. He wants to know what he's got. Especially after the guy does his worst. Collins seems to always give the player the opportunity to balance the scales. I kinda respect that as a character building thing. But this is not the time for such tests.

You know what we got w/Montero, I know what we got w/Montero, by now TC should know what we got w/Montero. A Sept. race for a spot is not the time to be giving a pitcher with such a glaring problem a second chance.

And as I said, I was also ok w/him starting the 2nd. But as soon as he gives up a gopher to the PITCHER(!), Terry gave him a third chance. I'm still a TC fan but he's gonna hear a lot of shit about this one. More than the Flores business and more difficult to deflect.

We have a Bruce hit in captivity.

Re: IGT 9/12/16: NYM@WAS -- The Rafael With It

Yeah, good idea Dusty. At 2-1/2 hours for 6 innings this game was moving much too quickly, so switching pitchers prior to the first pitch of the inning was completely necessary when facing a switch-hitter with an 7-run game lead and a 9-game division lead.

Then I should only speak for myself. But 9 walks in 10 innings (and that was before the game) and he's not on a short leash, he's got a tiny short noose to work with. IMO, of course.

Which leaves the question, if not him then who? This team has already gone ten deep in starters so it's either giving one of the other spare parts a second (third?) chance: Ynoa?, Merrett?, Niese is no longer in the equation, or give it to a completely new starter: Gilmartin? Smoker?

Unfortunately you have to go thru them and see who gets the job done.

Who's next? I dunno. I liked Ynoa early on. Right now I'll just observe. And maybe pray.

lil bit.

I know one thing. We have a lot of arms on the team right now. If Terry wants to see what someone's got use onea those. Montero had all this potential, this promise, but that evaporated some time ago.

In St Louis: 3rd pitch of the 9th inning = HR by Jeremy Hazelbaker.

And now somehow this all leads to Joe Maddon getting tossed from the game although it's not exactly clear why B followed A

Re: IGT 9/12/16: NYM@WAS -- The Rafael With It

Yes, or Matz. Serious question, what happened to Logan Verrett? I know I was down on him, but maybe he has some magic left for a start or two.

Montero is puzzling. On one hand, I feel like he could still work it out. He seems to have good stuff. Low 90's fastball, a good sinker, and his slider moves. And we've all heard that he has, or at least used to have, good control. His problem seems to be mental. His fastball is 94 with movement. I don't know why he's so afraid to throw it. If he could ever get straight in the head, I think he could still be pretty good.

The problem is, if history tells you anything, that guys who have this mental block have just as hard a time getting over it as someone with physical limitations.

Re: IGT 9/12/16: NYM@WAS -- The Rafael With It

Yeah, I don't think the Mets have any reason to panic. They likely have deGrom or Matz returning, and if not, they have Gilly, Gabey, and Logey. I guess they thought he was close enough to effective thus far to try and give him one more shot. Failure happens, and they're blessed to have other options to turn to.

As noted, the one early run and the lack of a will/ability to punch themselves back into the game concerns me more. If you want to be a post-season team, you can't just take the lickings from the best and console yourself that Minnesota is still on your schedule.

I was definitely for pinch-hitting for him. That's kind of the advantage of expanded rosters you know? But then again, I think I tend to be quick with the hook. I was all over Terry to pull him in the first. I think it's a miracle we got with only 2 runs.

Inexcusable, though, to leave him in to give up four runs in the second. He have up a HR to the pitcher, then gave up a laser beam to Turner that found the bat of Reyes. After the double to Murphy, he should have been gone.

Instead Terry left him in to face Rendon. This is not Jacob deGrom we are talking about here. If the kid has nothing, go and get him. It's September.
