IGT 9/24/16: PHI@NYM -- Sean A Little Love

The Wild Card-leading Mets (+1 over SFG, +1 1/2 over STL) attempt to inch a wee bit closer to a playoff berth by sending three pitchers to the mound tonight, Sean, Gil and Martin...what's their last names? Correction: It's Sean Gilmartin, their No. 18 starter, though at this point, the depth chart is good for cleaning Dan Warthen's glasses. And it's likely we'll see somewhere between three and eighteen pitchers anyway. Sean a little love on tonight's emergency arm. Alec Asher (not to be confused with Cody Asche) will be the Phils alleged starter. (Asher/Asche -- Rupp/Ruf ... what's with these guys? They get group discounts or something?) The soon-to-be 25 y/o Righty, who came over from Texas as part of the mass of bodies in the Cole Hamels deal, will be making his 3rd ML start of the season to go with the 7 he started in 2015. He shut-out the Nats two weeks ago on 2 hits over 6 IP in his 2016 debut. Since then he's held Pitt & Miami to 2 runs each over 6 and 4 innings. His only start vs NYM came just about a year ago (Game #158) and he might still be seeing a therapist over that one. He left after facing seven batters but retiring just two while allowing a leadoff double followed by two walks, two wild pitches, two HRs (Muffy - 3R, Conforto - 2R) and on the short end of a 5-0 score although it turned out to be the Mets and not him who wound up losing the game as Logan Verrett and Bobby Parnell (in his final NYM appearance) conspired to give back the entire early lead and more in that post-clinching game. Ya gotta figure that Robles, Ynoa, and maybe Smoker are unavailable for today's version of the March of the Wooden Pitchers, although Salas, Reed, and Familia should be tanned, rested, and ready.

Same lineup as yesterday, no? How often has that happened since April? The exact players have appeared in the exact lineup spot as the previous game (spots 1-8, of course) just 11 times this season, 7 times since April and only 4 times since July 1. The last time was 9/14 @ Washington. Three identical lineups in a row has only happened once this season (April 19-22), though there was an off day between the second and third games. The Mets record while trotting out the same lineup as the previous game: 2-9 Awesome stuff. LGM!

Not terribly surprising, though. This makeshift starting rotation was going to bite them eventually. If this game turns out to be a loss, it won't necessarily kill their season. But it's certainly discouraging.

Selectivity-- even among strikes-- is no great sin. It's fine to wait for your pitch. But when you get it, you better swing with more damn conviction than Nimmo did. Nice Confortable okay there.

Kind of wish they hadn't moved Campbell into the game. Terry has made himself look good working Soup in for a single at-bat here and there against lefties with runners on where they have to throw strikes. Planting him in the game where he's going to get three trips up there against a team that can choose who and what they throw at him seemed to put him back out of his depth again. Would have rather Terry put Bruce in there and Kelly in the infield. There's more upside to giving Bruce a game to work his way off the schneid. I mean, if there's a post-season roster, it's far more likely to include Bruce than Campbell, right? Great look at the future with Cecchini and Nimmo and Conforto and T.J. all swinging with confidence.
