IGT 9/26/16 NYM@FLA Heavy Hearts

7:10 start, Colon vs. Tom Koehler. Should be an emotional night in Miami, you'd think.

Re: IGT 9/26/16 NYM@FLA Heavy Hearts

It's awkward. Like the Braves in 2001, or the Orioles in 1979, fate suggests the role they are supposed to play is gracious losers on the road, where all sympathy is with the home team. But they need this game.

Also, the Marlins have an elimination number of 2. If the Mets win, that knocks them out.

lol.

What a ridiculously dramatic final week we've got coming up. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, maybe up by 10 games for the division but come oooon, nothin's easy. If we can limp over the finish line before Jane Jarvis plays taps we have had one fantastically 'amazin' season. After that it's one extra Mets game at a time. Bonus baseball!

Re: IGT 9/26/16 NYM@FLA Heavy Hearts

I still kinda don't know how to feel about this.

I mean, I kinda smiled a little when I heard the Mets were winning. Then I clicked the radio off, and went right back to spending time-- hilarious time, intermittently-grating time, nourishing time-- with the familia. Baseball seemed a long way off today.

Yeah, they won 17-0, and nobody was into it. Terry already said that he's dreading tonight's game. If it wasn't so important, I'd actually be rooting for the Marlins to beat the Mets on this one night.

Re: IGT 9/26/16 NYM@FLA Heavy Hearts

It's strange knowing ahead of time that whatever happens you will remember this game for the rest of your life. Going to be tough to hold back tears tonight. But I definitely want to watch it. If his mother and grandmother are there I'm going to just lose it.

This stuff was hard to watch before I had kids. But ever since my kids were born, I'm a complete mess when it comes to this stuff.

I don't know how, but the Mets have to find a way to focus on the game tonight. Good luck boys.

Also, I am having trouble coming to grips with the fact that despite what happened, a small part of me is glad they are not facing Fernandez. I know it's wrong and I feel like a total dickhead over it. But no matter how guilty I feel about it, the feeling is still there.

That was my very first thought when I learned of this news. It was still in unconfirmed Twitter report form, so I somehow didn't buy it. Therefore, my thinking was "he's not dead, but he won't face us," which didn't exactly mesh. A cake and eat it too desire, I suppose.

Once it sunk in, I veered to sorrow and shame. Later I admitted my thinking to good friends of the Met persuasion. Each said, in essence, "yeah, me, too."

Well, I never like to see the Mets lose, but if ever there was a night in which it didn't bother me too much, it was last night. Touching ceremony and the Marlins were playing with such emotion, they were on a mission to win for their departed teammate and friend.

Much like the game against the Braves following 9/11, it was only fitting that the Mets ultimately won. Now tonight, it's time for the Mets to get back on track and win.

Sep 27 2016 12:07 PM
Re: IGT 9/26/16 NYM@FLA Heavy Hearts

The Braves were in the process of fending off the Phillies when they lost the game of 9/21/01. Philadelphia drew to within a half-game of them that night, while the Mets pulled to within 4 1/2. They were tied with Philly for the division lead as late as the succeeding Monday, 9/24, before winning their seventh consecutive N.L. East title by two games.

I don't know if their years-later comments about it being OK the Mets won for New York that night were rooted in perspective or they truly felt that way when it happened. 2001 wasn't a runaway for them by any means. They needed the game of September 21. They didn't get it. They survived.

I wasn't the least bit happy the Mets lost their game last night. I'm glad the Marlins won their game. though. Too bad it had to be the same game. But the Mets can survive, too.

In the meantime, thank you, Reds.

This math is too hard for me. Did our chances of clinching a wild card slot (any slot) increase despite the loss?

Yes, because the Cardinals lost. Any combination of Met wins and Cardinal losses adding to 5 means we're in.

That's commonly called a magic number, of course, but somehow that doesn't apropos of what the Mets are doing. A friend refers to it as the Wild Number.

My question was whether that benefit is offset by the half game we lose to the idle Giants. Again. Math too hard for me.

The Mets only have to finish ahead of one of the teams. I would say yesterday is a slight positive, because we're one day closer to the end of the season and the Cardinals failed to gain any ground.

If a team chasing yours loses, you benefit.

Re: IGT 9/26/16 NYM@FLA Heavy Hearts

Down just a hair acc to BP's odds.

Prior to Monday's game the Mets were at 83.7%, the Cards at 60.6%, the Giants at 55.6%
Today it's 83.3%, 49.6%, 66.8%

So obviously the Giants were the real winner of the day by process of sitting out. The increase in their playoff odds just barely (to the point of statistical irrelevance) washes out the decrease in StL's
Oh, and the Marlins jumped on the board with a 0.3% chance by virtue of their win so maybe you could say that's where our decreased shot went.

I didn't realize the Mets lost because I was watching the debates and then Mets fan, Chris Christie, said that the Mets had wrenched an emotional victory from the Marlins in mourning. Newt Gingch added that it was a magnificent Mets victory.

Christie then said that in fact, the Marlins never ever won a game against the Mets and that the Mets magic number to clinch the Eastern Division is one.

It's obvious that he follows the team very closely.
