Philly stepping on the Marlins, 6-2 so far, top of 7th
|
Chad Ochoseis Sep 06 2016 02:43 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
Giants manage to get themselves shut out at Coors, 6-0, and are now only half a game ahead of St. Louis for the first WC spot.
|
Edgy MD Sep 06 2016 03:00 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
Scherzer mostly did the Scherzer thing.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 06 2016 03:03 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
|
And with the Dodgers in the process of winning big (against Greinke) the SFG are seeing the NL West odds sinking by the minute as well; they'll be a full four games out after tonight barring a miraculous Snake comeback. And the Dodgers are starting Kershaw this Friday, conveniently for us it'll be vs the Marlins.
|
Edgy MD Sep 06 2016 03:13 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
I'm so rooting for Colorado to color their way back inside the lines.
|
Lefty Specialist Sep 06 2016 12:20 PM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
Hmm. It's basically down to 3 teams for two spots now. And you have to like their chances. (knocks wood furiously)
|
Frayed Knot Sep 07 2016 01:04 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
Pirates served up a Yadi Molina 1st inning Grand Slam and were down 5-0 to the Cards early, have come back to take a 6-5 lead and are still batting in the 5th
|
Frayed Knot Sep 07 2016 02:24 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
And Matt Carpenter ties the game in Pittsburgh with a pinch-hit solo HR with 2 outs on an 0-2 pitch in the 9th

And now a double & HR later (Molina & Grichuk) and it's 8-6 Cards.

Did they? The interwebs tell me it's 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th.
|

For the last month, the Rockies have been showing more heart than the rest of that division put together. Good for them. I'm totally rooting for them to get back in it.

Edgy MD Sep 08 2016 04:20 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
Washington goes to Matt Grace, pitcher #9 (turn me on, dead man), and Ender Inciarte leads off with a single.
|
Edgy MD Sep 08 2016 04:27 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
And with two out and a runner on first, and Matt Kemp coming up, Washington looks to pitcher #10, Mat Latos.
|

Benjamin Grimm Sep 11 2016 09:49 PM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
I just turned on the Giants-Diamondbacks game, and on the very first pitch I saw, Arizona took a 2-1 lead.
|
Chad Ochoseis Sep 11 2016 10:42 PM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
Hunter Pence just drove in two runs to make it 5-2 Gigantes. But he feels kind of guilty about it.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 12 2016 02:53 AM Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6 |
So the bottom line in this whole weekend is that we lost a game to the Giants, broke even with the Cards, and lost a game in the East to the Nationals.
|
Edgy MD Sep 12 2016 03:44 AM Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball |
Still and all, I expect if the Mets finish just out of the money, that second game with Atlanta will be the first lost opportunity to come to mind.

Cincy has been better in the second half, 'better' being a relative term but at least they've been within shouting distance of .500 since July as opposed to the 29-51 they started the season with. They've also been 7-8 vs StL this year so maybe this series won't be a total walkover. Rox have been about the same in the second half [4 games below Apr-Jun, 6 games below Jul-Sept], but no one has been as bad as the Giants post-ASB (25-41).

On a play where there is any question, and this was certainly one, the umps should just do their job and wait to see if there is a protest. At least look at the bench/manager to see if there's a possibility of one. What, was there a swingin' ump party after the game or something? WTF?

|
Frayed Knot Sep 30 2016 12:10 PM Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball |

Because I think managers have become too dependent on their 'eye in the sky' to tell them which calls deserve challenging. In fact I suspect it's probably team policy in most cases that the managers aren't even the ones to be making the call as evidenced by a call the Mets failed to challenge a few weeks back. Sandy wound up blowing his stack over that one, not at Terry but rather at the breakdown somewhere in the communication chain that never informed Terry that he should. I wasn't even aware until last night that there was this '10/30' rule actually written into the book -- 10 seconds for the bench to notify the umps that they're thinking of challenging and then 30 seconds (30 more, or 20 on top of the original 10??) to actually request that they go to the headphones -- but apparently that doesn't even apply on 'game-ending' plays when the rule says that the bench needs to appeal immediately. [Reds' mgr] Price's argument is that if four umps couldn't tell from their stations that the ball hit beyond the fence how are their bench supposed to know from nearly 400 feet away while in their subterranean dugout without getting help from upstairs and that the crowd noise made it impossible to know that their spies were trying to call them. By the time he did get word the umps were already halfway down the tunnel and telling him that his 10 seconds had expired.
|
HahnSolo Sep 30 2016 12:15 PM Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball |

The umps were clearing the field as the Cards were charging it. I mean, maybe get on the Reds for not acting quick enough or for someone on the field to say to one of the umps "hey that was a ground rule double", but damn it's a walk off run. The umps have to make sure the run was legit. If not for this, why is there replay? I'd hate to go to the NFL "all scoring plays are reviewed" but maybe they need to do something about walk off runs being reviewed.

I don't disagree with you, I'm just saying that that's the way things have evolved. It's like football coaches who can't 'go for two' unless the card in their hand with the game/score situation tells them that they can and if the card says they should they won't ever not do it. In the interest of not getting things wrong and looking foolish afterward, teams have pre-decided how their decisions are going to be made.
|
HahnSolo Sep 30 2016 01:34 PM Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball |
I would think in a situation like this maybe MLB needs something like the NHL goal review. Take it out of the managers/umps hands and let it go to the control center in NYC.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 30 2016 01:42 PM Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball |
Once a game is past the 6th inning the umps have to power to go to replay either on their own or via prodding/pleading from a manager, even one who has already burned his challenges. So they clearly could have done this on their own without altering the existing rules.

Or screwing the Mets, as it were.

The nice thing is... it doesn't matter!

The Giants beat the Dodgers. Only one happy outcome today, but I'm quite content. I was hoping for a Giants loss so that they'd end the day tied with the Cardinals. Had that happened, then there would be two possibilities for them having to play on Monday: Both teams win on Sunday or both teams lose on Sunday. Now I'm rooting for the Cardinals to win tomorrow and the Giants to lose.

Remember how the Mets had stockpiled all that talent, but it was nothing compared to Houston's? Houston is out of it.

First postseason since 1988 to include Mets but not Yankees!

Not to make too much of the "back-to-back" years thing but that '99 team was better than the '00 version that made it a round further. That's one thing I'm hanging my hat on, if we get by Wednesday of course.

You know, it's funny. With the Wild Card, you end up rooting for different teams to win or lose throughout the season. For instance, when Miami was starting to creep back in, I found myself rooting for Washington.
