So whilst we're in Cincy ...

- the Marlins host the Phils for 3 games starting this afternoon at 1:00

- [u:3tc04ctq]Cardinals are at Pittsburgh[/u:3tc04ctq] so we'll be getting mixed results from that series, but I think we need to mostly send good vibes to the Pirates now that we have a 2.5 game gap on them. 4:00 game today.

- Giants (now just 2.5 ahead of us) go to Denver. 4:10 start

- Dodgers host the DBacks, Greinke vs Maeda starts it off at 8 EDT tonight

- Braves head to Washington for a 4:05 game where they get to face Scherzer. Better them than us.

And with the Dodgers in the process of winning big (against Greinke) the SFG are seeing the NL West odds sinking by the minute as well; they'll be a full four games out after tonight barring a miraculous Snake comeback.
And the Dodgers are starting Kershaw this Friday, conveniently for us it'll be vs the Marlins.

Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6

The Pirates are just a train wreck right now.
I saw a couple innings of their game on Monday and they were making mistakes, errors, bad pitches all over the place. And while everyone can look just as pathetic in such a small sample when it's in the middle of a seven game losing streak you tend to think that's what they look like all the time. Then they go out today and give up a 1st inning GS.
But when they fought back to actually take the lead after that disaster of a beginning they must have thought that things were turning for them ... and then came those four consecutive batters in the 9th.

Pitt came back with a solo HR in the bottom of the 9th but it's a case of T-L-T-L

Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6

Did they? The interwebs tell me it's 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th.

I'm in Napa for work and, annoyingly enough, my hotel doesn't carry the Giants' broadcast station. And I can't watch the game on MLB.tv since I'm in their blackout zone.

Mets now need to go 14-9, an eminently non-miraculous .609 winning percentage, to get to FK's magic 87-win number. And given the way that every contending team that doesn't have a bird on their bat has been rolling over, it may not even be necessary to win 87.

WC opponent skeds for this weekend:

- Saint Louie continues their four-gamer with Milwaukee under the big arch.
Nice butt-kicking by the Brews to start things off but you get the feeling they probably shot their load and would have been better saving a couple of those runs.

- Giants head to the desert for the first of three games.
They're 10-6 vs the Snakes this year but 13-21 overall since Aug 1 and probably wishes Phoenix was still their old AAA affiliate

- Pirates (now 4 full games behind us) hosting Reds for the 2nd of their four-game series
Pitt won the opener Thursday

- Marlins host the Dodgers just in time for the return from the DL of Clayton Kershaw ... mmmm, lucky them

And, just for kicks, Washington takes their 8 game division lead against the Phils after being held to just five hits in a loss on Thursday
but at five games out after losing 10 of 12, they're basically on the fringes of things anyway at this point

Z really going hard-core last night.
The Giants used 9 pitchers in that game, the DBacks [u:2jhnvz71]used 12[/u:2jhnvz71]!!, 11 of them for 2 innings or less.

So the bottom line is that the 'Big 3' WC contenders stayed status quo last night with the Marlins (4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 back) keeping pace.
They also all gained a game on the Dodgers (for whatever that's worth) while dropping the Pirates another notch further down.

Re: O-o-T-S aka: TWi (PR) B -- Sept 4 - 6

So the bottom line in this whole weekend is that we lost a game to the Giants, broke even with the Cards, and lost a game in the East to the Nationals.
But, as CF said before the weekend started, the match-ups this weekend made it more of a 'hold your serve' type of situation where the object was to not lose any ground. And considering that the main competition were winning 5 of 6, we did OK for ourselves.
Also on the plus side, the Marlins & Pirates dropped further off the pace making this more certain to become of a three-into-two deal.

But the road starts to get tougher for the competition soon. Can't play MIL or ARZ forever.
The Giants have half of their remaining 20 games against either StL (4) or LAD (6), while the Cards are slated to face either the Cubs (6) or Giants (4) in half of theirs.

The slate for early part of the week coming up:

- Cards hosting the Cubs for three. Cubs' magic number for the Central was six coming into tonight (and they're winning big right now) so they should still be looking to put the hammer down on StL as each win will count double and they could clinch as early as Wednesday.

- Giants head home to host Sandy Eggo for a three-game set as, at least for now, their tour of the dregs of the NL West continues.

Marlins head to Braves, Pirates to Philles
Meanwhile ... the Dodgers play host to the Yanquis!!

Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball

Cards lose, Marlins losing 12-7 in the 8th, Pirates lose, Giants just getting going

Cubs magic number for clinching the Central is down to 3.
But maybe more importantly, the Cubs magic number for NOT matching the '86 NYM is 4. They would need to go 16-3 or better over their final 19 games to match or surpass the 108-54 record.

Pitt won in extras, but the Marlins also went extras w/Philly and they lost.
It's getting to be a bit of a long shot (now 5.0 games back of us, 3 or 4 behind StL depending on the late scores) but that's not enough to totally dismiss the Fish quite yet, particularly because we have three late games with them.
I'd prefer that they be mathematically out of things prior to that series.

And yet another 9th inning loss by the Giants.
Bumgarner left after 7 with a 1-0 lead (Kershaw went six) on 1 hit, 10 Ks
Giants got through the 8th inning unscathed but then Bochy, trying to avoid both his former but currently ineffectual closers (Romo & Casilla), used three different pitchers in an attempt to get through the 9th but the result was four straight hits and two runs before anyone could ever record a single out.

Of SF's last five losses they've had the lead going into the 9th in three of them and their blown-leads stats are just as bad going back a few months now.
They've also now lost 11 of the last 18 games that Bumgarner has started even though he has a sub-3.00 ERA over that time.

In all it was a good day for the Cardinals as they pick up a game on both WC teams. Miami also creeps a bit closer as they wait for someone to stumble.

Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball

While the overall position of the top three didn't change much in these last couple days, these last few days have brought the Marlins & even the frickin' Pirates back into at least the fringes of the picture.

As of last week, Pitt had sunk to four games below .500, had lost, in quick succession, Gerritt Cole & Josh Harrison for the season, and looked as dead as any pretender could be.
Since then they've won six of eight. Sure it's been Cincy, Philly & the Brewers, but bad teams don't always play bad from what I've heard.

And while the Marlins taking two of three from the Nats would have been welcomed at most times of the year, this week was a really bad time to see it.

Pitt -3.5
Marlins -4.0

There's also no longer any sense in hoping that the Dodgers could fall back into this so we've got to be neck-deep in rooting for LA in their final three head-to-head games w/SFG which conclude the season.

The Cardinals next play the lowly Cincinnati Reds, in St. Louis, so they may not lose again for a few days. It would be really nice if they can get a loss tonight. The Giants will have a day off tomorrow and then will host the Colorado Rockies for three games.

So for the first series of the upcoming week, the Mets will have the tougher opponent, although it's hard to say what kind of condition the Marlins will be in. For the final series it's advantage Mets again. They'll be in Philadelphia. The Giants will be at home against the Dodgers and the Cardinals will be hosting the Pirates.

If the Mets win any one of the three games in Miami they'll clinch a better record than the Marlins.

Cincy has been better in the second half, 'better' being a relative term but at least they've been within shouting distance of .500 since July as opposed to the 29-51 they started the season with.
They've also been 7-8 vs StL this year so maybe this series won't be a total walkover.

Tonight is San Fran's day off, so we'll be one ahead in games played to both other teams until our final off-day on Thursday evens things up again.

SF finishes things out at home: COL x 3, LAD x 3 - Late night starts Tues-Fri but the final two vs Dodgers will be afternoon games (4:15 / 3:15) so we all should be awake enough to follow along if necessary.

StL also home throughout: CIN x 4, PIT x 3 - also 4:15 / 3:15 for Sat/Sun

So in many of the cases the results of our game will precede the conclusion (and maybe even the start) of the others.
As mentioned around here somewhere, our game Saturday is now a 1:05 start
And, as with last year, they'll be doing all 15 final games on Sunday as simultaneous starts.

Apparently those advertising signs, above and also slightly in back of the regular wall, are in play and it's the railing behind both of them that determines HR/not and also in-play/not so that hit was a live ball.
But, yeah, having the losing manager chase the umps down the runway in a case like while the home team dog-piles at the plate and the cameras and microphones are coming out to do post-game interviews is one of many problems that apparently no one anticipated when they slapped together this replay rule.

On a play where there is any question, and this was certainly one, the umps should just do their job and wait to see if there is a protest. At least look at the bench/manager to see if there's a possibility of one. What, was there a swingin' ump party after the game or something? WTF?

At least that's what I was hearing [u:347hnxgy]from the Cincy announcers[/u:347hnxgy] who claimed that's what they read about the ground rules in Busch III, although it's not like they have local inside knowledge either.
The weird part is that those ad signs are not only above the wall but slightly set back as well so there's a little 'shelf' between the two where the ball could get stuck so maybe it's a GR double if it sits up there and doesn't come down but that's obviously not what this ball did. In all it seems like a screwed up design if nothing else.

Because I think managers have become too dependent on their 'eye in the sky' to tell them which calls deserve challenging. In fact I suspect it's probably team policy in most cases that the managers aren't even the ones to be making the call as evidenced by a call the Mets failed to challenge a few weeks back. Sandy wound up blowing his stack over that one, not at Terry but rather at the breakdown somewhere in the communication chain that never informed Terry that he should.

I wasn't even aware until last night that there was this '10/30' rule actually written into the book -- 10 seconds for the bench to notify the umps that they're thinking of challenging and then 30 seconds (30 more, or 20 on top of the original 10??) to actually request that they go to the headphones -- but apparently that doesn't even apply on 'game-ending' plays when the rule says that the bench needs to appeal immediately.
[Reds' mgr] Price's argument is that if four umps couldn't tell from their stations that the ball hit beyond the fence how are their bench supposed to know from nearly 400 feet away while in their subterranean dugout without getting help from upstairs and that the crowd noise made it impossible to know that their spies were trying to call them. By the time he did get word the umps were already halfway down the tunnel and telling him that his 10 seconds had expired.

The umps were clearing the field as the Cards were charging it. I mean, maybe get on the Reds for not acting quick enough or for someone on the field to say to one of the umps "hey that was a ground rule double", but damn it's a walk off run. The umps have to make sure the run was legit. If not for this, why is there replay?

I'd hate to go to the NFL "all scoring plays are reviewed" but maybe they need to do something about walk off runs being reviewed.

Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball

I don't disagree with you, I'm just saying that that's the way things have evolved. It's like football coaches who can't 'go for two' unless the card in their hand with the game/score situation tells them that they can and if the card says they should they won't ever not do it. In the interest of not getting things wrong and looking foolish afterward, teams have pre-decided how their decisions are going to be made.

Personally, I hate the whole 'eye in the sky' stuff to begin with. Not just because it slows the game up and takes the decision-making off the field, but it's that micro-managing stuff which is what led to calls being challenged because: on a pop-up slide to 2nd, it appears that the runner's cleats came off the bag by a 1/4 inch for a 1/4 second and it looks as if the laces of the fielder's glove was making contact with the sleeve of the runner's jersey during that 1/4 second and therefore the call needs to be over-turned following 30 seconds of dugout to booth consultation followed by three more minutes of umpire to bunker cross-chatter; situations that absolutely no one was in favor of reversing when they argued for replay on the grounds that "getting it right" is the holy grail that should over-ride all other concerns.

I suspect that MLB was fearful of a situation where the home team could set up some sort of relay system that would give them an advantage in cases of close calls and therefore decided that a standardized phone system with contact upstairs was needed to even things out. But, as many 'fixes' often do it's caused at least as many problems as it's solved.

Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball

I would think in a situation like this maybe MLB needs something like the NHL goal review. Take it out of the managers/umps hands and let it go to the control center in NYC.

The problem with that is you can't do it on every play. The NFL does it for every scoring play, but even then for baseball it would be too much. Maybe institute it for game-ending plays only?

Re: TWi(NL-WC)B Notes: This Week in (NL-WC) Baseball

Once a game is past the 6th inning the umps have to power to go to replay either on their own or via prodding/pleading from a manager, even one who has already burned his challenges. So they clearly could have done this on their own without altering the existing rules.
Not sure that I totally buy the quote (above somewhere) that John Franco says the umps said they had a plane to catch but, even if that story is embellished, the crew in blue certainly couldn't have been very motivated to stick around and quite possibly turn that into an extra-inning affair especially seeing as how it had been raining much of the night as it was and so I'm sure all involved were already cold, wet, and grumpy.

You know, it's funny. With the Wild Card, you end up rooting for different teams to win or lose throughout the season. For instance, when Miami was starting to creep back in, I found myself rooting for Washington.

This was the first time I rooted for a team to lose, then win, in the same game.

For 7 innings, I rooted for Pittsburgh to win, so the Mets could clinch. Then the minute our game went final, I found myself rooting for St. Louis, so they could end up in a tie with the Giants.

So yay Bastardo!

Today is not meaningless Sunday. Today we root for the Cards and Dodgers.
