If you don't like rock 'n roll, you're too late now...

Songs with rock 'n roll themes, rock 'n roll in title, rock 'n roll in the lyrics.
One of early Rainbow's multi-faceted sounds...

One thing they don't make anymore are songs promoting the genre, and I think maybe this has something to do with the death of rock. A symptom if not a leading cause.

This song is so cheesy it could squirt out of a can but I dig the beat and geetar.

This thread turned into a pileup pretty quick. I'd like to explore the idea expressed above that rock died either *because* it was so rockin its practioners wrote songs to celebrate its rockinness, OR because the practice of writing rock songs encouraging listeners to rock isn't sufficiently ironic enough to survive today. Disco by the way had lots of songs about disco-ing, and even rap about rapping. But you don't see Belle + Sebastian singing "Indy Pop is Good-Time Music/Listen to it" What's up with that?

Re: If you don't like rock 'n roll, you're too late now...

I think for a time it became easy to write/promote songs w/R&R references either in the title or as a theme because radio programmers were so eager to treat hem as almost in-house commercials for their format and give them lots of air time. I suppose those songs are still in heavy rotation in 'Classic Rock' stations although I have no idea if/how many of those still exist.

Kind of a sad video, too. Eric Carr was very sick at the time. He's playing drums in the video, but didn't play on the song, though he did sing in the a capella part. He died not long after.

And because Kiss can't get enough rock and roll, here's another song -- "Let me go rock and roll."

Re: If you don't like rock 'n roll, you're too late now...

True story. Around about 1987, a friend of mine is crossing the street in Greenwich Village wearing a leather jacket. She has her New York don't-fuck-with-me game face on, and coming the other way is an older guy wearing a leather and a game face of his own. The problem is that her jacket is tricked out with metal rings down the sleeve, and his, go figure, is tricked out with hooks down his sleeve.

You know how it goes down. Like something out of a Nora Ephron movie. Their sleeves brush as they pass in the crosswalk and they get all sorts of stuck together. But the guy is an asshole about it, and just tries to yank his sleeve away. But they're both wearing decent quality clothes and the hardware hangs on despite his yank, so she gets yanked a couple of feet in the wrong direction across the New York crosswalk by this scowling, long-haired, leather clad jerk. She's righteously pissed, and not knowing the guy from Adam, fixes him with the first sarcastic nickname that comes to mind, "HEY, let me go, Rock-N-Roll!"

He starts cracking up. She doesn't know what's going on, but is somewhat calmed that Johnny Hooks is taking a softer tone. He apologizes through the laugh, takes off the jacket, and crosses to her side of the street as he untangles his hooks.

She asks what's so funny, and he says, "I'm Gene Simmons. I guess you can't tell that without the makeup, but 'Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll' is one of my songs."

She's thinking, "I don't know who you are with or without makeup. Are you the chick from Great Expectations?" But she doesn't say that. Her strategy is now to let this guy think he's all that while planning a gracious exit as soon as she's done getting unhooked. I don't remember if he asked her out or anything. But it was only later in the day, she was thinking, "Oh, right, Gene Simmons was one of those guys from KISS."

She's telling us this preposterous story over the weekend, and as soon as she gets to "HEY, let me go, Rock-N-Roll!" my friend Terry, says, "And he turns out to be Gene Simmons from KISS, right?"

She's not only stunned, but scandalized, saying, "Wait a minute, I thought you liked GOOD music. I mean, isn't that all we have in common? We like good music?" And Terry says, "Yes, but what you don't know is from 1978 to 1981, my brother and I fronted Red Dune!"

And she looks at him like he's an alien, and he says, "Baldwin, Long Island's NUMBER ONE teenage KISS tribute band! And I got to sing lead on 'Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll'!"

I don't recall! I'll check the photos in the yearbook when I get home.

Nassau did a pretty great job landing names for concerts. Just in the years I was there I remember Joe Perry Project, Zebra, Derringer, Psychedelic Furs, and and unfortunate performance from The Waitresses where the new signer was reading lyrics off index cards.

I loved the Joe Perry Project! I bet I saw him five or six times.

Wait, I have to make it fit the thread. Here's a video of "I've Got the Rocks and Rolls Again."

OK, there we go.

First time I saw him he was on a bill with Def Leppard and Ozzy on the Blizzard of Ozz tour at the Nassau Coliseum. I think Joe played second, but I'm not positive.

There was a theater up in Glen Gove, I think, and he played there a number of times. Each time with a different lead singer.

The first album is strong, but I like the second better. It's got a very rough, garage band feel to it. Largely recorded live in a theater. One of my favorite albums, still. The last CD is pretty uneven.

Not sure if I told this story here ever. But I was the editor of the paper and interviewed Joe before the show. He signed my albums. Kind of answered my questions. Not entirely coherent. I'll look for the photo. It's funny, because you can tell that I was loving every second of it --but trying to look like a cool, calm, collected journalist -- and Joe was graciously tolerating me.

Anyway, I always through Nassau -- and Edgy's brother! -- did a great job getting acts to the college.

OE: Found it. For your amusement. Be kind. It was my 18-year-old, long-hair phase:
