Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

Sep 01 2016 12:27 PM

This morning I received the official word from our corporate headquarters in Stockholm: The Tabloid Cover Derby will return for a second year, with voting to begin shortly after the conclusion of the World Series, whether or not the Mets participate.

Last year we had 368 covers to choose from, with 133 from the Daily News, 124 from the New York Post, and 111 from Newsday.

So far we have a field of 265 covers: 98 from the News, 87 from the Post, and 80 from Newsday. Whether the totals end up comparable to last year will depend largely on how newsworthy the Mets are in October, but even if the team fizzles in September, we should easily have at least 300 covers in the competition.

Let's hope that this year's gallery includes cover photos of parades and "ticker tape" (or whatever substitutes for ticker tape these days).

Cover counts through September 16: Daily News 116, New York Post 100, Newsday 90.

I wonder... if the Mets go deep into the postseason this year, will they get as many front pages as they did last year? Or will the Presidential election limit them to the back pages? Let's hope we find out!

Amazing that there is a chance that this could be fun this year. I loved the Tabloid Cover Derby 2015. I sat there at times thinking how depressing the covers would be this year.

If the Mets have a good homestand, might we see the return of NHOP?

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

Maybe! I thought of dusting off the NHOP a few weeks ago, but with the Marlins and Pirates still in the mix it seemed hopelessly complicated. Things are coming into focus a bit more, so maybe NHOP's time has come. Let's see how the weekend goes.

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

The 2016 Tabloid Cover Derby will get underway two weeks from today, on Thursday, November 3.

The current number of covers in the competition is 360, a few short of last year's 368, but if the Mets make any offseason news, covers will continue to be added until the final thread of the first round is launched, which is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, December 4.

At the moment, we have 140 covers from the Daily News, 116 from the New York Post, and 104 from Newsday.

As a reminder, last year's winner was YES-PEDES, the Daily News cover from September 10, 2015. A large framed copy of the cover has been hanging in the lobby of the CPF's headquarters, Kran Pool Forum Internationella Huvudkontoret in Stockholm, Sweden. This year's winner will receive the same honor.

The winner was announced on February 2, 2016 at an outdoor ceremony in Stockholm. David Wright was there to represent the Mets. Also attending were U.S. ambassador to Sweden, Mark Brzezinski; the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf; and the ghost of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman.

And here's the photo that was taken after the framed cover was put on display in the lobby. We all remember, of course, our lovely receptionist Maja.

And new for this year will be an actual visual bracket so we can follow how the covers are progressing through the competition. It will be updated periodically. Here's a recap of last year's Tabloid Cover Derby, using the new bracket developed by our engineers in Stockholm. (Special thanks to Arvid, Valter, and Novalie!)

Mets legend Rusty Staub and 2014 Miss Sweden, Camilla Hansson, were on hand at Citi Field yesterday to kickoff the return of last year's offseason sensation, The Tabloid Cover Derby! Voting starts tomorrow, November 3. The format will be the same as last year, with 32 first-round threads in which all entries will be presented in groups of roughly 11 or 12 covers. In each first-round thread, you'll be able to vote for up to three favorite covers. Second and subsequent rounds will be NCAA-style single elimination. There will be a break for Christmas week. The final winner will be announced in February, and will be displayed in the lobby of the CPF International Headquarters in Stockholm.

The current cover count is 368: 142 for the Daily News, 116 for the New York Post, and 110 for Newsday. This number will continue to grow. The cutoff date is, tentatively, December 4, the date that the final first-round poll is scheduled to launch. I'm expecting we'll see at least a few more covers in the next several weeks with updates on Jeurys Familia, speculation on Yoenis Cespedes, and whatever off-season news or rumors may come up once the World Series ends.

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

Initial voting for Round One, Group One has completed, although we do still have a tiebreaker in progress, with Newsday's HAMMERS & THOR currently holding an 11 to 7 lead over the Daily News' MATZ BETTER.

If that lead holds up, the Daily News will have five of the eight covers to advance from this group, with two for Newsday and only one for the New York Post.

Second-round matchups are determined by the percentages of votes received in the first round. The number 1 seed is the Daily News' YA GOTTA RELIEVE, which received 30.6 percent of the votes cast in Round 1.1.5. It will face the 8th seed, WHAT A HAM, also from the Daily News.

1. YA GOTTA RELIEVE! (Daily News, 30.6%)
2. WORLD SERIOUS (New York Post, 27.5%)
3. THAT'S TERRIFIC (Daily News, 24.5%)
4. BLADDER UP (Daily News, 23.1%)
5. MATZ BETTER (Daily News) or HAMMERS & THOR (Newsday) (22.2%)
6. AMAZIN' OFFSEASON (Newsday, 21.4%)
7. METS IN A LANDSLIDE (Daily News, 20.5%)
8. WHAT A HAM (Daily News, 14.9%)

Last year, three of the four covers to make the Final Four were number 1 seeds: N.Y. CITI (Post), CON4TO (Daily News), and TEAM OF DESTINY (Daily News). The winner, YES-PEDES (Daily News) was a number 2 seed.

The current bracket, reflecting polls that have been completed as of this morning:

Our tiebreaker thread has ended, and Newsday's HAMMERS & THOR has defeated MATZ BETTER of the Daily News by a score of 12 to 8.

First-round voting is now complete for all polls in Group Two and eight more covers will advance to the second round. Of this group of eight, we have four covers from the Daily News, three from Newsday, and one from the New York Post. The Post is off to a slow start in this year's competition. It has so far only secured two of the eventual 32 slots on the board, compared to nine for the Daily News and five for Newsday. (Last year at this point, the News had eight first-round winners, the Post had five, and Newsday had three.)

The Group Two winners, seeded from 1 to 8 are:

1. SULTAN OF SWAAT (Daily News, 27.9% of the vote)
2. IN A PINCH, (Newsday, 27.6%)
3. DOZEN GET ANY BETTER (Newsday, 25.0%)
4. SIGH OF RELIEF (Newsday, 23.7%)
5. FROM MEEK TO MIGHTY (Daily News, 23.3%)
6. SEEDS OF LIFE (New York Post, 20.0%)
7. SWEEPING THE COUNTRY (Daily News, 17.8%)
8. GRAND FINALE! (Daily News, 17.6%)

Twenty-four covers have secured a second-round spot so far, and the Daily News has a commanding lead in number of covers: There are 13 from the News, 7 from Newsday, and 4 from the Post.

The Group Three winners, seeded from 1 to 8 are:

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

The New York Post has really stumbled out of the gate in this year's TCD. The Post only won four of the first 25 first-round polls, but has recently made up some lost ground with three winning covers in a row:

The Post's chances of winning this competition do look fairly grim. One of their second-round entries, WORLD SERIOUS, is currently trailing in poll 2.1.2

At the moment, things are looking pretty good for the Daily News to once again have the winning cover, based on the number of first-round winners. But things can change. Sometimes it's possible to win even with a "narrow path to victory".

2. THE HAIR APPARENT! (Daily News, 26.3%)
3. GAME SETH MATCH (New York Post, 25.6%)
4. WET & WILD! (Daily News, 22.0%)

6. HOPE (Daily News, 20.5%)
7. T.J. MAXX! (New York Post, 20.0%)
8. ALL TOO FAMILIA (Daily News, 17.9%)

The 32 covers that will compete in the second round include 17 from the Daily News, 8 from Newsday, and 7 from the New York Post.

With a new Tabloid Cover Derby winner set to be named in three weeks, people have been wondering about the fate of YES-PEDES, last year's winner which has been on display in our headquarters lobby in Stockholm. Well, the exciting news is that YES-PEDES is embarking on a world tour, with stops in art museums in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Terre Haute, and New York before settling in to its permanent home at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. The cover is currently on display at the Louvre in Paris, where it has temporarily displaced the famed Mona Lisa portrait by Leonardo da Vinci! For details about tour places and dates, check in with Maja at the front desk.

And speaking of Maja...

Apparently since we last checked in with her she's become a bit of a celebrity in Sweden. She's had a glamorous makeover, and she's now starring in a reality show, Maja: Ut Från Bakom Skrivbordet, which airs on Sweden's SVT network. Negotiations are underway for the show to be available in the United States on Netflix or Hulu some time in 2018.

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

Bumping this to the new page.

Ha! Love it. Is that Lucas Duda in the crowd of tourists?

I wouldn't be so sure that Maja is gone. That type of celebrity can be short-lived. For years they said Vanna White would leave Wheel of Fortune.

That entire Northwest bracket in addition to being beset by VOTER FRAUD is a complete dog as compared to, the Southeast. I wonder if next year the committee will consider seeding not based on dates but by random draw or some other way.

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

I've toyed with the idea of seeding the 32 first-round winners by vote percentage. That's how the seeing is currently done, but within the four "groups."

Here's how they would have been ranked if there weren't the four groups. (Final Four covers in bold.)

[list]
1 WIL POWER!
2 11th HEAVEN
3 YA GOTTA RELIEVE!
4 METS FIND NIMMO!
5 CES BOOM BAH!
6 SULTAN OF SWAAT
7 IN A PINCH
8 WORLD SERIOUS
9 IN COMPLETE CONTROL
10 THE HAIR APPARENT!
11 GAME SETH MATCH
12 DOZEN GET ANY BETTER
13 THAT'S TERRIFIC
14 SIGH OF RELIEF
15 FROM MEEK TO MIGHTY
16 BLADDER UP
17 HAMMERS & THOR
18 WET & WILD!
19 LIKE OLD TIMES
20 AMAZIN' OFFSEASON
21 YO GOTTA BE KIDDING!
22 METS IN A LANDSLIDE
23 HOPE
24 SEEDS OF LIFE
25 YO & BEHOLD
26 FAB FOUR!
27 T.J. MAXX!
28 ALL TOO FAMILIA
29 SWEEPING THE COUNTRY
30 GRAND FINALE!
31 MATZ INCREDIBLE!
32 WHAT A HAM[/list:u]

In the second round, WIL POWER would have faced WHAT A HAM, and in the third round, the winner would have gone up against the winner of BLADDER UP vs. HAMMERS & THOR. 11th HEAVEN would have faced MATZ INCREDIBLE and then the winner of FROM MEEK TO MIGHTY vs. WET & WILD. And so on.

Thank god for this Cover Derby. I can't imagine how boring this winter would have been without it. I don't know what we will talk about once this ends.

I guess by that time Yoenis Cespedes will be driving his cars to spring training. Or Matt Harvey will start peeing again.

Not to create any additional burden on the hardworking folks in Sweden but I feel the contest would be better served if there was more guidance from the home office as to what the voters are expected to be judging for. Seemed like too many contests went the way of the story associated with the cover and not the cover itself.

Yes, definitely bring it back. It's a great way to re-live the season.

I tend to vote on a number of factors, the story involved, the picture, the headline, the sidebar, everything. I like that the rules are open-ended. But I'm fine if you guys want to tailor those next year.

Not really about the competition but in just re-living all the great moments of the season.

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

I don't expect to impose any guidelines because people won't understand or follow them anyway. I prefer that they get voted on as visual artwork, which cover you'd most like to frame and hang on your wall, or in the Louvre, or in an office building lobby in Stockholm. But I think that art appreciation is, and should be, subjective.

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

As they're "news"paper covers I tend to vote towards which ones delivers the best story. Not the content of said story but just the "picture is worth a thousand words" type. Seeds of Life, with the double meaning about David Wright and prospects of the team for 2016 and the joy associated with it as they're all ensconced in a storm of these seeds that would maybe bloom into a fantastic season for Wright and the Mets is so deep that I'm pretty sure most of it was unintentional.

Maja seems nice. It's good to be promoting the Mets in Sweden. You never know. She might inspire the next Thor.

The winning cover is kinda like Jeter. It makes the other artwork on display there better, even that drab one of the lady hanging next to it. Is that a smile or a frown? Kinda like the look I make when Terry brings in Familia to close a post-season game.

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

The final round of voting has begun this morning and will run for seven days.

Our two finalists are SEEDS OF LIFE, from the New York Post, and CES BOOM BAH! from The Daily News.

SEEDS OF LIFE is the first Post cover to advance this far. (Last year's final round was between two Daily News covers, YES-PEDES and CON4TO.)

The two covers eliminated in Round 5 were METS IN A LANDSLIDE (Daily News) and 11th HEAVEN (Newsday).

11th HEAVEN made Derby history in two ways: As the first Newsday cover to advance to the Final Four and as the first cover ever to win a unanimous victory. It defeated the Daily News' ALL TO FAMILIA by a score of 15 to 0 in the second round.

And finally, for being featured on the highest ranked Newsday cover, Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera will be awarded a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni (The San Francisco Treat), Turtle Wax (It gives a hard shell finish) and a copy of the Tabloid Cover Derby Home Game, available wherever fine toys and games are sold!

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2016

When you say, "a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni", do you mean:

A. Enough Rice-A-Roni to last you a year, if Rice-A-Roni were the only thing you ate

or

B. As much Rice-A-Roni as one would reasonably expect to eat in a year?

Big difference.

Voting has closed for the final thread of the 2016 Tabloid Cover Derby, and Yoenis Cespedes and the Daily News once again prove to be a winning combination. CES BOOM BAH! is the 2016 Champion, defeating the New York Post's SEEDS OF LIFE by a tally of 14 to 7.

2016 CHAMPION COVER
CES BOOM BAH!
New York Daily News, August 30, 2016

The winning cover was revealed this afternoon in Stockholm in a ceremony in the Royal Palace. The Mets were represented by manager Terry Collins. Also on hand were Sweden's Queen Silvia; CPF receptionist Maja, who is currently starring in the reality show Maja: Ut Från Bakom Skrivbordet on Sweden's SVT Network; a few representatives from the Järfälla branch of the Kran Pool Barn Klubb (Melker, Märta, and Sigrid) and the ghost of Swedish actress Greta Garbo, making an extremely rare public appearance.

Maja apparently had a little too much brännvin at the reception prior to the ceremony and got inappropriately chummy with Her Majesty.

The reception had to be moved indoors this year because of protests in the street held by a group consisting of Matt Harvey aficionados, bladder enthusiasts, and urine fetishists.

After the ceremony the cover was installed in the lobby of the Kran Pool Forum Internationella Huvudkontoret in Stockholm. Maja has changed to her business attire and is back at her day job as our receptionist.

As the featured player on the winning cover, Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will receive a 1968 Chevrolet Nova!

And, for being featured on the highest ranked New York Post cover, Mets captain David Wright will be awarded a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni (The San Francisco Treat), Turtle Wax (It gives a hard shell finish) and a copy of the Tabloid Cover Derby Home Game, available wherever fine toys and games are sold!

The final bracket:
