Nervous about a lefty-heavy lineup against Bumgarner. And Bochy won't hesitate to leave him in as long as possible to avoid that crappy bullpen of his. There'll be no pitch count worries in this game.

The Mets starting 1B is an interesting decision. I've seen Campbell's named mentioned (righty). Do you go with better defense (allegedly) with Loney or Duda and hope he can "getaholdaone"?

Met hitters' career vs. Bumgarner: .189 / .261 / .238 // .499. The good news is that this year it's .279 / .367 / .372 // .739. The bad news is that even with those numbers from this year folded in, .189 / .261 / .238 // .499 is still .189 / .261 / .238 // .499. He's 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA. He's Sandy Koufax against them. They got to him back on August 18, but the Giants got to Jacob deGrom worse. In fact, without double checking, I'm going to go out and state that it was the worst outing of deGrom's career. Gave up 13 hits, including a homer to Bumgarner. But this isn't about deGrom. He's hurt. It's about getting to Bumgarner. In that 8/18 start, he gave up the only homer by a Met of his career. It came off the bat of Justin Ruggiano. And he's hurt too. This is going to be a tall order.

1. Syndy needs to keep us in the game. I'm fairly CAHNfident he can do this as SFG ain't a Powerhouse offensive club but rather a balanced-attack kinda team. They don't whiff alot or hit a lotta HRs. They ran the bases like crazy on Syndergaard earlier this year. 2. Can't make any errors. This by the way has not been a pressing concern of mine virtually all year, that is an under-appreciated result of the Muffy Effect. But as noted SFG puts the ball in play a lot. 3. We gotta get Buttgardener off the mound asap. He's basically like their best starter, best 7th inning guy, best 8th inning guy and best closer, they just might keep him out there all day. I wouldn't necessarily disapprove a secret plan to knock him off the plate while batting too.

I don't know. I'm enjoying the respite. I didn't watch any of yesterday's game, and I'm glad not to have anything to worry about today either. I'll probably start getting a little antsy tomorrow and getting through the day on Wednesday will be a challenge.

Bumgarner's great post season portfolio means only one thing to me. He's due for an asskickin'. I think Thor is a head strong guy and that's a good trait in a pitcher, but I do wish he would accept the fact that he has to do something about what base runners are doing to him. I mean, all that would take is a better move to first, right? That's all I'm worried about, base runners going wild. But if Syndergaard don't let em reach first then it won't be a problem.

My lineup? Bruce is crap against left-handers, and super-crap against Bumgarner (3-23 lifetime). Johnny Lags is much better against left-handers, and just as crap against Bumgarner in a smaller sample, but FAR better defensively than Granderson in center. Granderson contributes a little bit more with the glove and the bat-when-not-hitting than Bruce. My starting outfield is Cespedes-Lagares-Granderson. Kelly Johnson at second. TJ Rivera at first. The usuals at short and third and catcher. Gives us six righties and three lefties (Noah being one). Duda and Bruce lurk-- along with Cecchini and Ty and Nimmo?-- as PH options/midgame replacements. 9-10 pitchers should be fine, and give us room for many a PH/PR/defensive replacement option. I have a plan. I like this plan.

Bruce has the most PAs against Bummy, but is just 3-23 (but does have one of two homers that current Mets have hit against him). For what its worth, Klapisch on the Mets Blog podcast thinks the Mets will beat the Giants, but would be lucky to win a game against the Cubs. Only mentioned Jeter once or twice. Shame on Cerrone for bringing up the "Worst Team Money Could Buy" book over and over. Not caring about the Cubs yet. LGM.

Almost 11 hours until the game starts and we're already on page 3 of the IGT! In this thread, on Monday, I said that I was enjoying the respite from baseball but that my patience would run out by today, and I was right! How am I going to get through a day at the office? I wish I could put myself into suspended animation until 7:30 this evening.

And that's the thing. With all that Asspuddin did he even did that. Possibly robbed us of a run with his glove. That just floored me when it happened.

Syndergaard was yanked too early. Always stretch your successful pitchers in these games. Starters or relievers. Always. The next guy may. Not. Have it. Winter or Winters or whoever behind home plate was confounding on not giving the knee-high strike. The field level seats circling around all the way to the foul line behind the bases in left and right is a hateful design flaw that no stadium — and certainly not any stadium the Mets call home, should have. A man who knocks a ball down the line past the thirdbaseman is entitled to a standup double. Full stop. I intend to correct this injustice with strategically placed explosives during the offseason. Campbell was wishful thinking, wasn't it? Loney too, perhaps. The Reyes bouncer to second that advanced the runner? Young Reyes beats that out. Loney's indifferent wave at that infield hit has sealed his fate for me.

And even if Noah has to come out after seven, I think Reed should have stayed in and pitched the ninth inning. Rene Rivera had made the last out. Reed could have gone into his spot in the batting order and Travis could have gone into the ninth slot.

I didn't have a problem taking Syndergaard out when he did. The concept of always stretching your pitchers works until it doesn't as with Harvey last year. And it's not that I think Syndergaard's arm is going to fall off if he goes over 110 pitches (he was at 108) but at some point effectiveness can be expected to fall off and his final two innings were anything but smooth, involving 37 pitches, 2 hits, a walk, an SB, and that drive to CF that sent Granderson into the wall. It's really the same thing I said about the O's-Jays game: I think it's hard to manage a team that wins with home runs when it doesn't provide home runs, because the whole plan is off-script. I know the great teams can and do adjust for that but the 2016 Mets in the final analysis weren't a comprehensively great team. Cespedes really sucked the big one this last week. I feel like I've watched him enough by now to recognize when he *looks like* he might a ball out of sight, like he did a few times to win games during our run. I feel like there's a body language to him that suggests it could happen. I was more than willing to be surprised, but that look never materialized last night. oe: I'm not at all saying he sucked, just that he ended the year in a bad slump.

He was in position to stretch out and grab it but instead pulled up and folded his arm, perhaps fearful that he was more likely to deflect it than field it. But was softly hit and eminently catchable. That's not a man stretching for a play.

He could have gone a second inning from Reed, I suppose, but then if Reed coughs it up in the ninth it's Britton II -- except there's no save situation to save Familia for, so you might as well use your big guns while you can. Familia just wasn't himself out there; he was missing all over the place. I think it was Fman who said it a few pages back -- it was Aiming Familia, not Throwing Familia. Regardless, he was the right guy to have out there in that spot.

And while you can argue that one of them was that infield grounder, one of the outs came on the drive to the 408 mark. On the Loney play, he was closer to it than I remember but I guess my point here is that if the 2nd baseman can field you should let him so perhaps Loney's bigger crime here was not recognizing that he didn't need to go roaming for the ball in the first place.

I just think at the time Reed came in you make the double switch, so you have the option to go another inning with Reed if you want to. By then, Terry has to know that Bumgarner is good to go 9 or 10 innings and he has to extend the game as long as possible. He tried to play it by the regular season book (Reed 8th, Jeurys 9th) but he needed to be willing and able to let both go multiple innings. Might not have worked out since Jeurys was not sharp, but the double switch has to be the move there.

What's the argument for pulling him there? He didn't need to be pinch-hit for. He had thrown 108 pitches, 11 fewer than Bumgarner ultimately threw. He was still on top of the situation in the seventh with the big threat fueled by a cheapie infield hit. And the third out wasn't struck all that hard either. The drive to center was back in the sixth. He was the the best pitcher pitching the game of his life. Going to the bullpen while that is still available to you turns the contest into a game of Russian Roulette. If Bumgarner can go 9 or 10, an eighth shouldn't be treated as a no-brainer for Syndergaard. This is the whole season on the line. On the Loney play, he was closer to it than I remember but I guess my point here is that if the 2nd baseman can field you should let him. But he couldn't. Not in time, anyhow.

It's not tough to read between the lines to see that Tom and Nancy are bitter at the Mets and were actively rooting for San Francisco. Perhaps it's the statue thing (legitimate gripe). The Mets were his employers. He has no obligation to be a fan. I know for most here, the name Seaver is revered. But for me, I never witnessed it. I have faint memories of an aging Seaver in '83, and an unsuccessful comeback in '87. My direct memories are of an unlikeable, annoying announcer who displayed open contempt for modern day players. He is also an ass. My son and I have ridden in elevators with two baseball players in our lifetimes. One of them was Derek Jeter, at home, in his own time, when he had no obligation to say anything to anyone. The other was Tom Seaver, at Shea Stadium, during a game. Jeter could not have been more gracious, welcoming and friendly, and seeming a really down to earth guy. Seaver was the exact opposite. Stone-faced, staring straight ahead, making it evident with his body language that he wanted no part of talking to the little boy looking up at him. Fuck the Seavers, I say.
