One effect of the Walker return is that it again tilts the Mets to the lefty-heavy lineup alignment. How big a problem that is depends on how much stock you put in Walker's numbers last year against lefthanders. Swapping out Bruce for Céspedes certainly changes that look a lot, but right now they look like exactly the sort of lineup that a lefty could eat up.
|
Centerfield Nov 15 2016 07:55 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
The lineup looks better today than it did this time yesterday. And will look much better if Cespedes returns, but I'm not sure I feel that great about it yet.

Did not expect at all to have both Walker and Cespedes back next year.
|
Benjamin Grimm Nov 29 2016 07:57 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
I'd put Conforto in that lineup instead of Bruce. I figure he's almost certain to be traded now.
|
Centerfield Nov 29 2016 08:02 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
|
I was thinking about that. I'd start Conforto too, but right now Bruce is in the organization, and if he's still here in April, you figure he'd start ($$$) over Conforto. Agreed that he will almost certainly be traded.

Also agree. I want Conforto in there. I consider Duda a question mark until I see him play in spring. So I wouldn't be all that quick to deal Bruce. That can wait for now. Jay has only 3 games at first base in his career though. I guess we always have Flores for first. Yea, trade Bruce, see if we can get a catcher who's up to snuff. Or more pen help.
|
Ceetar Nov 30 2016 03:45 AM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
Duda is, and will be, a full time player. he's not platooning. Now, if he's not healthy, that's a different story, and one that you don't fill with Flores anyway.

Lefty Specialist Jan 25 2017 02:28 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
So you're assuming Wright is still injured/unavailable on Opening Day? I mean it's not a bad bet, but if there's any day he'd want to play, that'd be it.
|
Edgy MD Jan 25 2017 02:29 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
Yeah, until action gets underway to tell me otherwise, I'm working from the assumption that he and Wheeler start the year on rehab assignments in St. Lucie.
|

The above lineup, only with Markakis and Phillips flipped (and also with Inciarte spelled correctly), is how the Braves are playing it tonight as they open their new suburban stadium vs the Yanx.

That's not a terrible Braves lineup. Let's hope Thor makes them LOOK terrible, though. Problem is, Teheran positively owns the Mets during his career.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 01 2017 05:29 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
The Braves are going to score runs this year - especially seeing as how that new park looks like it's more inviting to hitters than the last one. Freddie could hit Fifty there.

Where it gets murky is that Rivera sucks and you want to maximize your lineups in the 18 against the Nats and that probably includes both d'Arnaud and Thor.

3 run double for Duda off a lefty. Take that all you Duda-hating Met/SNY social media people.

Why does Keith seem so surprised that O'Flaherty sucks?

Is that the first ball ball Ender Inciarte DIDN'T catch against us?

Once, not long ago in the great scheme of things, Ó Flaithbheartaigh was a real weapon. From 2009 to 2014, in fact. Yeah, Keith has seemingly missed seeing him the last two years, but Keith's a busy man.

Yes, but part of his schedule includes a paid gig watching a team for which O'Flaherty prominently sucked during a pennant race.

Basically Freddie at 3rd started for home on the dribbler but then turned back for some reason which was odd since the Mets weren't even going to look at him or try for the harder out just out of some silly notion to preserve the shoutout. Problem was that his false start faked out Kemp at 2nd who then tried but failed to scramble back to his base. Duda wasn't even looking for a throw until he saw Kemp in no-man's land. The cameras really didn't catch it all (at least not the main angle) so that even after the final out was recorded I initially assumed that Freeman had scored and that the final score was 7-1 since shirley he crossed the plate prior to the non-force out. Only then did I realize that he never ran at all ... it was the only thing he did wrong all game.

It was a great game and a long awaited return to baseball games that count. I napped from 1-2 PM as I usually do on my work from home days and was glad to have not missed any plays of significance in the first 2 1/2 innings.

It's that time of year when I come out of lurking mode and actually log on to the CPF. A beautiful day...if not a bit cold in the shade...at Citi Field. Got to the parking lot at 10:30 for tailgating, no traffic at all getting there. It was nice to see TMF, KC and DD again, and nice to toast a new season with GTS wine! Our seats were in Section 137 in LF. We moved down into the sun as soon as people vacated their seats. Not a lot of offense outside of the 7th, but it was nice to see a big hit with RISP. The concession stand in our section ran out of hot dogs, but that was the only negative on this day.

I'm still not a fan of replay/review but I have to say it makes the experience richer in a sense. Because I went thru both emotions, the bummed out one when Flores was called out, and then the YAY!/happiness when the call was reversed. I know it goes both ways but we seem to be more successful then most at getting a call reversed. Percentage wise.

Not to mention the later passed balls, and then how about his set-up on the play at the plate with Wilmer? I don't think I've ever before seen a catcher purposely position himself to take the throw in foul territory behind the plate only to then have to come forward to make his tag. As close as that was one could only figure that a better set-up would have gotten him the call and one that would have stood up. (also not a great slide by Wilmer ... but that's a whole 'nother problem) I think catching, bullpen, and the back of the rotation are going to be the Braves biggest obstacles this year. We certainly saw two of the three yesterday. They'll hit, they'll run, they'll defend, and they hope to have pitching depth on its way (although that last one is always iffy until it actually happens) but finding a good catcher is a toughie.

Edgy MD Apr 04 2017 01:26 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
We won the game on bullpen wildness, man. That three run dubble was just the natural corollary of all those free passes.

I was apprehensive in the moment about sending him mainly because Inciarte was so shallow by the time he fielded the hit.

I usually give one full point to a reliever who pitches a scoreless inning in a tie or a one-run game. (Unless it's a busy game and there are a lot of players for whom I have to squeeze in points). So for yesterday, Robles gets a 1.0 from me, but nothing for Salas and Gsellman, who pitched a scoreless inning in a six-run game.

G-Fafif Apr 04 2017 05:13 PM Re: IGT, 4/3/2017, ATL@NYM |
Wilmer Flores became the eighth DFDH -- de facto designated hitter -- in Mets history by batting for the pitcher twice in the same inning. Previous DFDHs: Jim Fregosi, Dave Marshall, Mike Cubbage, Howard Johnson, Gregg Jefferies, Vance Wilson and Daniel Murphy. Marshall's moment came in the largest of all Met comebacks, from down 8-0 to beat Houston, 11-8, on September 2, 1972.
