Enciarte isn't exactly an on-base machine, but apart from the four and five hitters, it's a pretty young group. The Mets, on the other hand, remain solid, top-to-bottom, but — unless they return Céspedes — lefty-heavy and with no obvious standouts. Second base is wide open, with Rivera in a good position to displace Flores and claim the Keystone, but if Wright is ready to answer the bell, Reyes may move over to second and displace them both.

One effect of the Walker return is that it again tilts the Mets to the lefty-heavy lineup alignment. How big a problem that is depends on how much stock you put in Walker's numbers last year against lefthanders. Swapping out Bruce for Céspedes certainly changes that look a lot, but right now they look like exactly the sort of lineup that a lefty could eat up. Fortunately, the Braves don't look be starting any of those in the opening series. The lineup looks better today than it did this time yesterday. And will look much better if Cespedes returns, but I'm not sure I feel that great about it yet. Keep getting this feeling that good Conforto versus bad Conforto might make or break our season. And I know it's usually not black and white, but with him, it's kinda been feast or famine.

Also agree. I want Conforto in there. I consider Duda a question mark until I see him play in spring. So I wouldn't be all that quick to deal Bruce. That can wait for now. Jay has only 3 games at first base in his career though. I guess we always have Flores for first. Yea, trade Bruce, see if we can get a catcher who's up to snuff. Or more pen help.

Duda is, and will be, a full time player. he's not platooning. Now, if he's not healthy, that's a different story, and one that you don't fill with Flores anyway.

On the Mets side of things, Terry seems determined to bat Céspedes out of the three hole. On the Braves side, some sites project Garcia as the #2 hitter, thus looking to Phillips to show some old-guy skills and hit in the middle of the lineup, but he's batted second the last few games. Also some hinting that Swanson will bat ahead of Flowers, but that's just brand loyalty talkin'. That's not a terrible Braves lineup. Let's hope Thor makes them LOOK terrible, though. Problem is, Teheran positively owns the Mets during his career. I'll be there in the left field stands and I'm getting pumped. Let's get this party started.

The Braves are going to score runs this year - especially seeing as how that new park looks like it's more inviting to hitters than the last one. Freddie could hit Fifty there. Their question remains whether all the AARP pitchers they picked up over the winter will provide a bridge long enough to get to the up and coming ones they have on the farm. If the oldsters fade while the youngsters don't pan out as expected then they're going to lose a lot of high-scoring games. But if some combination of Bartolo/Dickey/Garcia have another year in them and/or the baby arms come faster than expected, this could be a very dangerous team very quickly. They've done a remarkably quick pivot as soon as they realized that those big contracts they tried a few years ago weren't going to work. And I still don't what the fuck Arizona was thinking by dealing 1/1 draft pick Dansby Swanson PLUS Ender Inciarte PLUS pitcher Aaron Blair for Shelby Miller. And Miller was the guy the Braves had turned Jason Heyward into just a year earlier.

No reason you can't do both—relaunch d'Arnaud and give Rivera the bulk of the Synderstarts. Backup catchers get about 20% of the starts anyhow, so I got no probz with personal catchers. Thoughts from the left field stands: Thor was good, but Teheran was just as good. But in a battle of the bullpens, I had a lot more confidence. Not 6-runs-in-an-inning confidence, but enough. The game-ending double play was awesome- need to see the replay. The scoreboard was completely screwy today, impossible to follow for long stretches. Russian hackers? In the middle of the 8th, Cespedes threw a ball into the stands and exactly the right guy caught it, giving it to his kid. Considering the Drunken Asshole factor was high in our section, he had perfect aim. Ladies bathrooms were disgusting so sez the Missus. Took forever to get into the park; you'd think they'd have this whole security thing down by now. Not enough wands, so women had to wait longer than the men to get in. Sexism! Concession stands were also atrocious, and there are fewer condiment stands than in recent years. Maybe Fred thought we were using too much relish. But hey! Magnetic schedule! All in all, a Met win makes for a fun day.

It was a great game and a long awaited return to baseball games that count. I napped from 1-2 PM as I usually do on my work from home days and was glad to have not missed any plays of significance in the first 2 1/2 innings.

It's that time of year when I come out of lurking mode and actually log on to the CPF. A beautiful day...if not a bit cold in the shade...at Citi Field. Got to the parking lot at 10:30 for tailgating, no traffic at all getting there. It was nice to see TMF, KC and DD again, and nice to toast a new season with GTS wine! Our seats were in Section 137 in LF. We moved down into the sun as soon as people vacated their seats. Not a lot of offense outside of the 7th, but it was nice to see a big hit with RISP. The concession stand in our section ran out of hot dogs, but that was the only negative on this day.

I'm still not a fan of replay/review but I have to say it makes the experience richer in a sense. Because I went thru both emotions, the bummed out one when Flores was called out, and then the YAY!/happiness when the call was reversed. I don't think I've ever before seen a catcher purposely position himself to take the throw in foul territory behind the plate only to then have to come forward to make his tag. As close as that was one could only figure that a better set-up would have gotten him the call and one that would have stood up. (also not a great slide by Wilmer ... but that's a whole 'nother problem) I think catching, bullpen, and the back of the rotation are going to be the Braves biggest obstacles this year. We certainly saw two of the three yesterday. They'll hit, they'll run, they'll defend, and they hope to have pitching depth on its way (although that last one is always iffy until it actually happens) but finding a good catcher is a toughie.

We won the game on bullpen wildness, man. That three run dubble was just the natural corollary of all those free passes. As terrible as the Braves bullpen was that inning, it was almost a sin that our rallying ended with a Met swinging 3-0. Learn a lesson and give 'em enough rope to hang 'emselves, Wilmer.

I was apprehensive in the moment about sending him mainly because Inciarte was so shallow by the time he fielded the hit. With two outs that's a definite GO, but with one I was at least 60/40 in favor of holding. My problem with Wilmer's slide that I mentioned earlier was that he started too early. Home is not like the other bases where you have to hold the bag, you can slide by practically landing on the plate and busting right through it and ha the done that he would have been clearly safe without all the drama. No reason to be slowing down before you even get there.

Tough game to score Schaefer points with but I wanted to influence you to reward the Pabst Blue Ribbon Unsung Heroes of the day: Hansel Robles who came into a scoreless game following a guy with far superior stuff but held the fort 1-2-3. None of us would have been surprised if that's the point at which it all broke down. Rene Rivera started the rally with a nice base hit off what looked to be a tough pitch to handle

I usually give one full point to a reliever who pitches a scoreless inning in a tie or a one-run game. (Unless it's a busy game and there are a lot of players for whom I have to squeeze in points). So for yesterday, Robles gets a 1.0 from me, but nothing for Salas and Gsellman, who pitched a scoreless inning in a six-run game.

Wilmer Flores became the eighth DFDH -- de facto designated hitter -- in Mets history by batting for the pitcher twice in the same inning. Previous DFDHs: Jim Fregosi, Dave Marshall, Mike Cubbage, Howard Johnson, Gregg Jefferies, Vance Wilson and Daniel Murphy. Marshall's moment came in the largest of all Met comebacks, from down 8-0 to beat Houston, 11-8, on September 2, 1972.
