Agreed on both sentiments. But one advantage that the Mets have is that the pitching, overall, looks to be in pretty good shape. You have our five horses that you hope can be ready to go when the bell rings. You have Gsellman and Lugo that you can throw into the mix. And you have (hopefully) a fairly simple negotiation to bring back Colon. Could use a 7th inning guy, and a few lefties, but the pitching looks pretty good.

Colón's a free agent, so the issue there isn't particularly whether to keep him in the rotation, but whether to resign him at all.

It comes down to how much faith you have that the big 5 will be ready. It sounds like deGrom and Noah (as of now) project healthy. Matz's shoulder won't require any surgery, and the elbow bone spur is fairly routine. But Harvey's surgery was major, and we have no idea how he will bounce back. Or even if that was the reason that he sucked last year. Wheeler is a complete mystery. Even when healthy, I don't know that he was better than Bartolo.

I'm guessing Sandy already has the basics of a Plan A (With Yo) and a Plan B (without Yo) in mind. The tough thing is that unless Cespedes makes his mind up quickly, and there is a good possibility he may not, then you have to start moving on Plan B before you know what he decides.

I just don't think he is categorically elite in any unique sense, and am open to the idea that their filthy money might find more productivity on the trade and/or free agent market. I don't know. There's certainly an argument to return the same team, and hope for better health, and there's certainly an argument to transition at a bunch of key offensive spots. They'll probably go for something in between.

And yet the Cardinals survived and even thrived (certainly better than the Angels have) after allowing Pujols to walk, as did the Mariners who set a record by eking out 116 regular season victories the very year ARod took his bat and glove to Texas. Both teams, in fact, scored more runs the following season without those two guys who probably rate as the most productive hitters of last 30 years or more. And there are other examples of this throughout the game. The problem isn't in recognizing that Cespedes is certainly A key ingredient in building a team, particularly one seemingly on the brink. The problem is allowing yourself to get locked into the line of thinking that treats retaining him as the only way to do things.

The 2012 Cardinals brought in Carlos Beltran, who hit 32 HR's and drove in 97. The 2001 Mariners signed some guy named Ichiro who went on the win the MVP. Again, I have no problem with the Mets replacing Cespedes with elite talent, like the 2012 Cardinals and the 2001 Mariners. But if the Cards and Mariners had relied on Alejandro De Aza and a healthy d'Arnaud, I suspect their fates would have been different.

I mean the obvious parallel is the A's making up for losing Giambi with Dave Jutice & Hattiberg, which of course happened on Sandy's watch. Nobody but the accountants has said it was preferable, just one way to go it.

Sure. One way to go about it. And I guess we could try that. Except we are not the 2001 A's. That team had MVP Giambi, and studs Eric Chavez and Miguel Tejada, who all mashed over 30 HR's and drove in more than 110. That team scored 884 runs, 5th in MLB. After losing Giambi, and replacing him with very capable and serviceable replacements, they scored 84 fewer runs in 2002. But they were still 9th in MLB in scoring, and behind their strong pitching, won the division. If the 2016 Mets did the same thing (lose Cespedes, replace him with capable and serviceable replacements, and score 84 fewer runs) in 2017, they will score 587 runs. Which would have been good for dead last (23 runs behind Philadelphia) this past season.

Cespedes was 60th this season in 'Runs Created'. He passes about half of those above him when you instead look at RC/G (RC is a cumulative stat so more ABs helps) but then he's lower on RC/G to some who had fewer ABs than him (Rockie rookie Dahl & MFY catcher Sanchez for ex.)

Agreed. And this is the type of move I hate the most. Spending money on B-level talent. I feel like in most of these instances your cheap-in-house option is not far off, and the money is better invested elsewhere. But sometimes they do get you close to what you lost, which is why I guess these moves continue to get made. The way I see it, in terms of likelihood of success, the team facing the loss of a superstar can: 1. Bring back the Star himself. You know your guy. You know what he can do. Barring injury or decline, you can generally expect your guy to be your guy. Sure. This costs money, but this is your best chance of success. 2. Replace the Superstar with Another Superstar. Like the Cardinals and Mariners in the examples above. And depending on the guy you bring in, maybe he can even be better. Variables like switching teams, new ballpark, how he'll react to a new city factor in (in Ichiro's case, crossing the ocean), so your chance of success is probably a tick lower. But I'm cool with this option too. 3. Replace the Star with B Level Talent. The Kevin Appier Principle. Like I mentioned above, I don't like this route at all, but going this way helps minimize the chance that you have a complete black hole. I mean, Kevin Appier wasn't bad. And neither was Todd Zeile. They just may not have been worth the money. Chance of success is less than options 1 and 2, but undoubtedly higher than... 4. Replacing the Star with two C- players and trying to justify it with arguments about splits and improving the bench. Which is what the prevailing thought was last year. If Cespedes had walked, and we trotted out the De Aza/Lagares platoon, we would have been fucked. We would have been under .500 and not sniffed the Wild Card. And for all the talk of minimizing AB's for quadruple A players, we still trotted out our fair share of Campbells and Ty Kellys. And that is the risk of trying to go the cheap route. The chances of success are low, and the downside is tremendous. Even the much celebrated Scott Hatteberg "success" resulted in 84 fewer runs for the A's the following year. Look, I get the draw of wanting to root for a team of scrappy overachievers who outperform expectations. That team is the micro-brewery of baseball. But if your goal is to win, building a team that way is not sound logic. Keeping your star, or replacing him with another star, may be unimaginative and boring, but it is the best chance of success. The Mets, with all their injuries, were third in MLB in ERA. That is terrific. You're probably not going to improve much on that, even if our horses get healthy next year. Where we were fucked was offense. 26th in baseball. And now we are facing a winter where two of our top 3 guys in OWAR (Walker and Cespedes) are free agents. And the third (Cabrera) is probably looking at a correction year. And sure, maybe you get some offense back with a healthy Duda, but we are looking at a big hill to climb, just to get back to sucking. I mean, everyone involved with the Mets (management, players, fans) all agree the offense has to get better. If Walker and Cespedes leave and take their 54 HR's with them, you have to make up this production, before you even think about actually improving the offense. How Sandy can do that in this market? I have no clue. But I'm open to suggestions.

I get that the loss of hitters like Cespedes and Walker will have an effect on a run-starved offense, but these guys were 26th in offense despite being 5th in home runs. They need to create baserunners and drive in the ones that get into scoring position, two things that they were really crappy at. Walker had 23 HR and 55 RBI. Cabrera had 23 HR and 62 RBI. Granderson had a mind-boggling 30 HR and 59 RBI.

If on-basey leadoff CF's are what your looking for, Dexter Fowler is your guy. .393 OBP, .840 OPS. Plays CF and leads off. Still only 30 years old. Steals a base here and there.

This has nothing to do with trying to build a particular type of team. Don't care about that, never did. Look, ideally Cespedes resigns and/or doesn't opt out of the in-place deal to begin with (yeah right!). But in the event that he leaves -- either because he wants to or because negotiations get to the point where Sandy et al make a judgement call that it doesn't make long-term sense to meet his demands -- then you move on and make other plans. My point is that there are lots of ways to move forward at that point not all of which follow in the simple 'must sign X to replace Y' format and if X < Y then we'll suck. If Cespedes leaves you lose not his total production but the difference between what he produce and what whoever gets the LF ABs next season puts out, whether it's someone already here, someone imported, or some combo of the two. And if whoever it/they wind up being looks likely to produce less then the team will need to make up that gap elsewhere; at 1B?, at catcher?, at 3rd?, CF?, or in several of the above slots. But you can't look at each move like it's unconnected to the whole. I know that's not what you mean to be saying but, when you limit the choices to saying that a team can't afford to lose an 'A' player unless he's replaced by a different 'A' because the sum total of the other options are replacing him with a 'B' or with two 'C-' guys and that means the whole season will be worse, then you kind of are.

There's also Replacing the Star with a Guy or Guys You Already Have, That You Strongly Feel Is/Are Ready to Break Through, and Are More Likely, by Your Estimation, to Provide Stardom over the Duration of the Terms of the Contract that the Star Is Asking for, While Freeing Up Money for Upgrades Elsewhere.

I think we are largely agreeing with each other. (But please, let's not let that fact keep us from discussing over two pages, it's the CPF after all!) And I get what you are saying that I seem to by isolating it to "by-position" production. You're right that overall upgrades throughout the team can offset the loss of any one star. But I guess I am skeptical that this approach is as easy as some think it is. I would say my reservations to that approach are twofold: 1. Oftentimes the "replacement-by-aggregate" approach is overly optimistic. You often see arguments along the lines of: "We will get Player A, who is not that great a player overall, but is pretty good against righties, and couple him with Player B who hits lefties, and between those two, we will have a decent player. Plus, we'll get Player C back from injury, and you'd think Player D would have to bounce back, because he couldn't be any worse than he was this past year." Except that platoon players don't always bat from their strong side. Lagares had 77 PA's against lefties, 76 against RHP. And sometimes those fringe players just tank. De Aza had a .618 OPS. Star players, generally, tend not to hit that type of floor. And counting on Duda to come back from injury doesn't take into account the guy that will go down unexpectedly in 2017. And sometimes, Jason Bay doesn't bounce back. He just sucks. So, if I saw an analysis that said we can make up for losing Cespedes and Walker because of expected increased projection in A, B, and C, and also took into account expected injuries that are typical in a given year, decline in performance for aging players, regression to norms from guys who may have overachieved in 2016, and all the other things that typically derail best case scenarios in any given year, and if after taking all of those things into account, it was still reasonable to conclude that there would be a better overall offense, then yes, I could get behind such a plan. 2. Intimidation Factor: I have no way of quantifying or proving this, but I feel like a lineup just has to have someone that scares you. We saw how lackluster this lineup looked in the first half of 2015, and when Cespedes was hurt in 2016. Again, I can't prove it, but a lineup without a bona fide star seems to lack that serious threat that causes pitchers to break down.* We saw it in the 90's when Piazza arrived. We saw the difference that Delgado made, and we saw it again when Cespedes was traded here. And I know I'm making an argument based on feelings, and I'm well aware of what I've said about feelings before, but man, I feel like the difference is palpable. So yes, I can get behind a lineup of 8 very good hitters, like I mentioned above, but if I had my preference, I would love to have that thumper (or 3) to scare the shit out of opposing pitchers. *And I know someone will raise Kansas City, but that lineup was stacked. 6 guys with an OPS in the .800's, plus a catcher who hit 21 HR's.

Any approach can be overly optimistic if your estimates for the player(s) are based on hope rather than something a little more grounded, or are moves done for pr effect more than solid baseball reasons. But that can be (and is) done with star players just as easily as with non-stars. Also, replacing a lost player 'in aggregate' doesn't only mean with part-timers and scrap-heap hopefuls. Importing and/or promoting regular, full-time players so as to make smaller or medium upgrades at two or three spots is a way to counter-balance a larger loss at one spot if there's not a viable star-for-star replacement handy.

One thing that may be earlier on the Mets to-do list than signing their left fielder is taking a long hard look at their list of arbitration eligibles. Projections have them taking more salary on through arbitration raises this offseason than any team save the Orioles.
Interestingly enough, that could have been higher, as a lot of guys due big raises (Duda, Ruggiano, Harvey) ended up spending most of the season hurt. I"m guessing there'll be one or two non-tenderees on that list. Had Duda not returned at the end of the season, I was thinking he was a good candidate for non-tendering. Now I'm a little more dubious. But they may see Reed as a wasteful luxury at $10+ million, and move him to a team that sees him as a closer, and perhaps fill a need they see somewhere else.

I don't know. I think star players are more reliable. Barring injury, you can pencil in their expected production. Star players are not only great, they tend to be consistently great (thereby making them star players). I think you run into trouble when you start projecting (and hoping) for production from the likes of De Aza, Marlon Byrd, Chris Young. Some may work out, but these bounce-around guys are bounce-around guys for a reason.
Again, yes this is possible in theory. But can we admit how hard such an approach is? I mean, it's one thing to maintain status quo, but the NY Mets and their 26th ranked offense have to significantly improve. Can it be done after losing your top guy? Sure. But it's really fucking hard. Let's accept your assertion that the loss of Cespedes can be offset by small/medium upgrades at 3 positions. And for the sake of this exercise, let's assume Neil Walker comes back and repeats his great year. We've now used up 5 of the 8 positions, and we are just at break even. The three positions where upgrades are the most likely are CF, C and 1B. Let's assume Duda takes care of 1B by himself, and we upgrade at CF and Catcher. That leaves us SS, RF and 3B to make our improvements. You have to guess that Cabrera will regress at least some after his career year (even with this year, his career OPS is .748). But I think you can offset that because we expect better production from Jay Bruce. Which means that any improvement that we have from last year to next, would realistically have to come from 3B. Now, is it possible that Reyes/Wright find the fountain of youth? Sure. But likely? I'm going with no. So sure, if we lose Cespedes, we will be fine, just as long as we re-sign Walker, keep Duda healthy, upgrade at catcher, upgrade at CF, and have Jay Bruce bounce back. And if all of those things happen, we will be back at square one, and then we can hope that we get sufficient increased production from 3B and the bench so that we can improve by the 53 runs it would take just to put us in the middle of the pack offensively. So possible? Yes. Absolutely. Difficult? Yes. Really fucking difficult. And let's be honest. We are probably not re-signing Neil Walker.

I don't know that 'stars' are any more reliable at repeating the numbers on the back of their baseball card than sub-star regulars with a similar sample size careers are at repeating theirs.

Yeah, I'm surprised too, but it doesn't really create a roster issue. If and when David Wright is available and ready to perform, it may create a lineup pinch. But there are worse things than lineup pinches. Five starters for four positions? These things tend to work themselves out.

Back at the CPF home office in Sweden, these are the opening day rosters we're projecting for the team's full-season minor league affiliates. Or at least, this is who we're projecting until J.P. Going through that list, it seems the system still has some depth, with the most glaring exception being outfield. Columbia's outfield is filled with guys who had Ordóñezian OPS numbers.

Nitpick #1: It's not really about what I want, but how the situation currently shakes out. Conforto is currently ahead of Nimmo and certainly Becerra on the depth chart. I imagine if Bruce/Céspedes/Conforto/Granderson/Lagares really was their outfield, that Conforto wouldn't rot, but I don't expect it will be.

Years on the ML roster alone don't automatically tick off option years. If d'Arnaud hasn't been optioned in some or all of those years than there can still be options left despite the amount of ML service time he's accrued.

Andrew Barbosa pitched well at four different levels last season. All told, he probably wasn't somebody the Mets wanted to lose. He came to them as a minor league free agent last offseason, and leaves the same way, probably not seeing doors particularly flying open for him on the Mets big league roster.

Monty had a perfectly good year at Columbia, working out of the pen to the tune of a 3.34 ERA over 29.2 innings, striking out an impressive 45 batters, while walking a less-than desirable 20. While the walks are disquieting, it was the first full season of success he's seen, so I'm guessing the release is either over disciplinary matters or something he requested.

Digging deeper, it seems that Monty has twice been suspended for testing positive for a "drug of abuse," and had recently been placed on the restricted list, so it looks like he's worn out his welcome.

I took out the stats, which just crowd out the board, but this guy went 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA for two International League teams last year, striking out 24 and walking 16 in 24 2/3 innings. In brief MLB time with Cleveland, he went 1-0 with a 21.000 (!!) ERA over three innings, whiffing 4 and walking 5.

Well, say what you will, but Sandy sure likes to wait out the market and let it come to him. These two deals seemingly complete the offseason of recommitting to the team he assembled the previous season, re-signing five of the team's free agents and picking up an option on a sixth. And it's still theoretical that the team could sign Kelly Johnson (or Jonathon Niese!). But unless some salary-cutting or outfielder-removing (or both) maneuver is still forthcoming, they sure seem to have rounded out the roster. The main thing next is who gets lopped off the 40 if and when our two returning bullpenners pass their physicals.

That's good stuff. And you have to guess that the real precedent we're looking at here is 1974, as Heep, Ojeda, Lolich, Alvarado, and Sasser were at least on the rosters fro opening day.
Yeah, beyond that scenario is the concern that, even without trading Bruce, evidence is scant (or at least speculative) that he (or Conforto) will qualify as a real good option. The Mets are deep in secondbaseman, but they could use Johnson on the depth chart at first, third, and the outfield.

There's a lot of pressure ahead of Ty Kelly on the infield depth chart, and a lot pressure coming from behind. It's almost certainly healthier for his career if he's with another organization by the end of the weekend. But I sure hope he isn't. Funniest Met in a while.

We wouldn't want to miss the all-important spring training number assignments. Unfortunately, while these designations are thrilling in and of themselves, we are robbed of some of the extra drama of seeing who gets a low-ish assignment. The answer is ... almost nobody. Since there are no new players brought in on major league assignments, no obligations have been felt by the equipment staff to dress most of these guys like major leaguers. Not even top draft choices like Cecchini or Smith have escaped the cross of the big number

Jeff Walters is food for thought for all the Marcos Molinas who got hopeful when added to the mets 40-man. Jeff had a fantastic year in Binghamton, was added, got hurt, got DFA'd, and then got added again the year after. But now departs having never tasted a big league buffet spread. The closest thing to a surprise in the first round of cuts is maybe David Roseboom. He was the maybe the third or fourth lefthanded reliever, until shortly before camp, when Gorzelanny and Blevins were signed one on top of the other. The bigger surprises may be who didn't get farmed out—Gorzelanny, who isn't fooling anybody; Becerra, who has to prove his power isn't gone; and maybe Taijeron, who the team has regularly passed over when they've needed outfielders, but they probably have to take a look at this year, considering the relative lack of other righthanded-hitting outfield options.

We missed that this guy signed last week. He's pitched indy ball the last two years, and not particularly effectively, but he had a successful year for Milwaukee back in 2013. He was sent straight to minor league camp and will likely open with Binghamton.

I'm counting 29 healthy major league bodies in camp. At this point, it's less interesting who gets cut and who doesn't, as whose health rallies and whose doesn't: Matz, Wheeler, Gorzelanny, Wright, Lagares, and Nimmo all have a good chance (to varying degrees) to open the season on the DL.

I hope Montero edges (if not Edgins) Lugo for bullpen spot. Let Seth stretch out for starting, keep Rafael away from the rotation. Montero's limited success has come in relief. His mom's conspiracy theories aside, I was less than thrilled when Lugo said he couldn't get psyched to pitch in a spring training game after the WBC final. Maybe that's true, but geez, don't say that unless you're tenured enough to admit it -- and even then, don't say it.

I was thinking that Jio Mier might be Vegas bound earlier today, but the signing of Josh Rodriguez all but eliminates that possibility. Rodriguez, who went to camp with Oakland this year, will be returning for his third tenure with the Mets organization, and he'll likely make an ideal mentor for the tribe of young infielders out there. I'm betting he's joining the organization as a coach when he hangs 'em up.

It seems all but a fait accompli that Juan Lagares is heading to the DL, so Roster Central is forced to reverse course and congratulate Ty Kelly on making the opening day roster. All that's left is to finalize whether Montero has beat out Lugo (which I think he has, but the Mets want to keep Lugo in the family a few more days), and to figure out how to squeeze Kelly back onto the 40-man. I hope it is not a 60-day DL assignment for David Wright, but my fears butt up against my hopes.

He's still NYM property -- they even "negotiated" a contract for him this winter even though he'll never see a penny of it -- which allows them a first crack at retaining him on the off-chance that he gets reinstated before the years of team control run out and on the further off-chance that they'd want him at that point. But I guess there's no downside in doing it that way and the fact that he's suspended means that he's not currently taking up an active slot on the 40. Just think of him as the equivalent of being on the 60-day DL but, instead of 60 days, his stint lasts until he accumulates enough service time (and, yes, suspended players accumulate service time) to be a FA after the 2019 season.

Lagares returning in a reasonably short amount of time is encouraging. They are escaping the calamity of bad circumstances. Get Famila back and it's more or less the roster they were meant to have.

Good to get the team's pitching staff down to a more workable seven, and to have a top reliever back, but a bench with three wounded warriors and a third catcher is still a bench that's woefully short. Lagares may be their only real bullet for a night or two.

Do we have a date on which Wright's assignment to the 60-day is effective? It could be back-dated to March, which would still make him eligible to return in May (if he's healthy, natch) but if it's effective yesterday then we definitely can't see him until late June, at the earliest.

A little Blake Beavan also has freed up Raffy Montero to play for the Mets again. With Tyler Pill throwing three more scoreless (indeed hitless) innings (so far) tonight, Montero is probably looking at an extremely short leash at this point. Like, he's got the organizations fingers through his collar.

Mayday arrives as a likely replacement in the rotation for Rafael Montero. But he hasn't yet been added to the roster, and that may ultimately be in Asdrubal Cabrera's stead. But they will have to clear a pitcher in the next couple of days, maybe two.

It's funny how when you've got status, they wring their hands for days (or weeks!) over whether to disable you. When you're a roster backender like Milone, you stub your toe and it's a quick trip to DL. Do not pass the trainer's office, do not collect ibuprofen. And you can hardly complain. It guarantees you at least 10 more days and probably more of MLB pay. Beats a DFA.

Carter, Lyons and Sasser held down spots from start to finish in 1988 -- three catchers on a 24-man roster that won a division title. As if that's a guaranteed formula for success. But still.

The "voluntary" 24-man roster was born in 1986, made it to 1989. The 1990 CBA put an end to that nonsense.

Why is Montero still on the team. How bad does he have to be to get demoted? With injuries going through the Mets roster like "pink eye" at a day care center, Montero of all people, remains healthy.* He just sucks like a Hoover. I know the Mets need arms, but I can't believe Montero is still in New York. Must make Goeddel feel like crap, to know he is stuck in Vegas while Montero throws batting practice every time he takes the mound for the Mets.

Blake Taylor was the party of the other part and the main target of the Mets in that Ike trade. He's not exactly flourishing in his trip through the minors either. Once the 2nd round (51st overall) pick of the Pirates four years ago, he's currently 0-6, 4.47 in 9 starts for Columbia On the other hand he's still just 21 y/o (was still several months away from turning 18 when drafted) and has 48 innings under his belt so far in 2017 which is only slightly less than what he threw from 2014-2016 combined (41 + 12 + 9) so maybe it's just a case of catching up and shedding rust. Ike, btw, is hitting .214 w/3 HRs in 56 ABs for AAA Oklahoma City in the LAD chain.

Hardy Bardy was mostly injured earlier in the year. (Hardy Bardy isn't very hardy, are he?) So he will be reporting to St. Lucie to work out before being added to a minor league roster. Technically, he'll be a St. Lucie Met on the Temporarily Inactive list.

Besides Desmond Jennings, the Mets have recently released a handful of short season leaguers as they clear room for all the drafted newcomers. These guys have spent the last few months playing scrimmages and working out in St. Lucie, but haven't been working out hard enough!

Edgin could be almost literally lost in the shuffle, as his DFA, was simply a product of the Ramos deal being timed two days apart from the Reed deal. Had they been a day apart, Edgy would still be a Met. Looks like we're sitting on a 24-man roster for now.

Looks like Edgy cleared waivers and lives to Met another day, but any theories on what has led to his banishment? I mean, he's got a 3.65 ERA, and while ERA isn't everything for matchup reliever, that's a number that gets you hired by a team like the Mets with day-to-day pitching problems, not fired.

Four fifths of them anyhow, with the potential fifth guy (Travis Tajeiron? Jayce Boyd? Nori Aoki) being a mystery at the current time.

Other than the return of the injured, do the Mets have many players left in the minors to add to the major league roster on September 1? I guess Josh Edgin, Kevin McGowan and Tyler Pill. For a 3rd catcher, Thomas Nido is on the 40-man.

Yeah, I agree. Considering they traded for him, he's likely coming, as he's a free agent if they don't add him to the 40. And he's pretty much first in line to be their fifth outfielder next season.

Familia will be back on Friday. Conforto will presumably be gone. Travis Taijeron is being talked up as replacement. He was the 2016 John J. Murphy Award winner for outstanding Spring Training rookieness and, until now, the only Murphster to never have played for the Mets in real games. Well, him and 2000 honoree Garth Brooks.

From the perspective of the Phil Evans Fan Association, this is great news. Phil was scheduled to become one of the Mets' dozens (upon dozens) of minor league free agents this offseason and probably the one they least wanted to lose. He survived last year's Rule V draft and we didn't want to lose him to the swirling winds of roster pinches.

I've had that poster for most of my life. I still do, but it's not hanging any more, and not for a long while. The third act is Johnny Talbot and De Thangs. There were no other acts on that poster. The rest of the type provides dates, times and location info. The type is supposed to be illegible -- defying all the conventions of poster art. The idea was that viewers of those posters, which were hung all over the streets of San Francisco, would linger over the artwork longer, thus increasing their desire to attend the concerts. Google up some Victor Moscoso posters from that era for some really hard to read graphics.

You'd figure either Kevin Kierst still had Nido's 70 in his trunk, or his promotion would be rewarded with a number in the thirties. Trading in one spring training number for another seems odd.
