According to multiple sources, Terry Collins is considering playing out the last season of his contract in 2017 and hanging 'em up.

Marc Carig didn't break the story, but he got some money quotes.

“I love what I do. I love managing in New York. It’s kept me young, it’s kept me energetic. But I just had two friends die and all of a sudden it hit me. They were retired and they got to enjoy it. All I’m saying is with what happened to me at Milwaukee at the end of the year, I’m going to evaluate where I am.” ...

“It’s made me think. Especially with what happened to me in Milwaukee. You don’t want them carrying you out of the clubhouse, that’s all I’m saying.”

Him and Alderson being where they are in their respective careers, it might be an indicator of them going all-in next season, though it's certainly debatable what all-in might look like. A year to line up a successor is certainly an interesting situation as well. A good chance to be thoughtful.

Re: Sunset

Mets and all-in are something we haven't seen in quite some time. I'm
sure Fredjeff are happy to have had meaningful Septembers two years in
a row and plan on having another season of such with some better injury
luck so I'd be shocked if they shove many more chips into the all-in thing.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter. If he wants to win it for the ghost of Maury Amsterdam, that's fine by me.

Or the Ghost of Marv Throneberry. (Wasn't he a CPF-er a long time ago?)

Re: Sunset

Maybe I'm cynical, but I can't help but think this is some pretty good maneuvering by Terry Collins. In fact, it might be the smartest move he's made this year.

He's heading into the last year of his contract. Despite the strong finish, and the WC berth, he knows that his job is probably safe, but that he's on thin ice. He knows he's definitely not getting an extension this winter.

Since he's going into his last year, we are going to see story lines about "lame duck manager". There may even be some in the press who call on the Mets to offer an extension. It's a possible distraction. Would that be enough for the Mets to cut ties with Collins and move on now? Probably not. But it's a possible issue.

So Collins goes on the initiative and says he "might" retire at the end of the season. Now all of those stories are deflated a bit. Why extend Collins? He might retire anyway. And lame duck manager? You can't be a lame duck if you are planning to leave on your own terms.

It also puts the Mets in a tough situation. Are they going to fire a guy who is one year away from retirement? And that becomes even tougher once the season starts. "Asshole Mets Fire Collins Three Months Away From Retirement".

Even if he manages with his head up his ass in 2017, I think he's just put pressure on the Mets to think "Well, let's just stick it out. It's his last season anyway."

Just my two cents.

This made me laugh out loud. Other Via riders immediately started texting about the weird guy in their shared cab.

I definitely think there's an element of beating the "lame duck" story line to the punch. IT'S A DISTRACTION!

Re: Sunset

They should just hire Tim Tebow to be the playing bench coach, and he'll be the heir apparent to Terry's job as manager. He'd be a player/manager/healer.

Well, with all the injuries this season, having a healer ofn the bench might be an asset.

This is the reason I'm not exactly crying over the move.

It's a no-lose for him.
