Scary and tragic

There but for the Grace of G-d go any of us. The poor woman was simply waiting for a train....

Well at least my post office cares. The flag is at half staff

Re: Woman killed waiting for train in NJ

That's a kind gesture.

Are you sure it's for the train crash, as opposed to some other recent death?

Re: Woman killed waiting for train in NJ

Have to see what comes out in the next couple of days regarding the cause of
this, but there are supposed to be safety buffers in place to keep a train from
barrel-assing into a station, sharp curve, etc. should something happen to the
driver. It's sad that someone had to tragically die waiting for a daily commuter
train, but it's also miraculous that this wasn't a complete catastrophe.

I don't know who it would be, but maybe

In accordance with the President's proclamation, Governor Tom Wolf has ordered all United States & Commonwealth flags at the Capitol Complex, Commonwealth facilities and all public buildings and grounds throughout the state lowered to half-staff immediately to honor the memory of former President and Prime Minister of Israel, Shimon Peres. Flags should be flown at half-staff until sunset on Friday, September 30, 2016.

That's sad too.

All I'm saying is some major league player dies (also sad) at 3 am in a boat crash that he shouldn't have been even been a part of at that time of day, in those circumstances, and there is a four page boo-hoo fest, which I for one read through with raised eyebrows, and this poor woman is standing there waiting for a train to take her to work, gets killed and nobody says a damn word except metfairy and me.

I just don't know.

Well, this is a message board primarily dedicated to the discussion of baseball, so Fernandez's passing is of far greater relevance HERE. The woman got more attention from us than Arnold Palmer.

That's not the case. You are not the only one who felt for this woman. I'd bet we all did on some level. Like you, the ugly randomness of the tragedy hits me in the heart. Not much different than how I felt for Fernandez. But that's not true, now that I think about it. Cause Fernandez was in a boat zipping around waaaay too fast. Like you said, this poor woman was just standing there. And also, I guess, because there was so much potential for others to meet the same fate but she was the only one.

I like the thought of them lowering the flag for her. Whether that was the case or not, lets believe that they did set the flag to half-staff for Fabiola Bittar de Kroon.

Only 34.

Re: Woman killed waiting for train in NJ

I was hearing about this crash while walking to get on public transit to NY so this was certainly top of mind for me, and like everyone I suppose in the early moments hadn't ruled out a terror plot. I didn't know there were any fatalities till later.

BTW, I also heard a midday radio interview with Chris Christie as they were still straightening things out. Considering the concurrent irony of how carelessly he treated the people he represented on transport issues when it suited him at Bridgegate, he seemed to have his shit together for a chaotic suituation here.

I guess we should be very relieved more people weren't injured.

Sorry KC, you too, buddy.

I will concede two points to you guys:
Fernandez was someone well known and you could immediately identify with him and his entire life, because you can look it up. I felt bad too, believe me. But he has little in common with any of us.
Most of you got to watch a very emotional game that I did not get to watch

Now, two points for me:
This thread is in the NON baseball forum.
Intelligent, lively, and provocative discussion of the Mets, Ed Kranepool, and just about every freakin' thing else!

Here's my beef guys. This lady could be any one of us waiting to go to work. The videos showed a blurry area where she was, and unless they put a red and white cloth over her, she was wearing red and white to work (or wherever she was going), and that pretty much humanizes her.
People on interviews were very upset because they had to step over or trip over her to get into the train to help, or out of the train to safety. If that's not heartbreaking, I don't know what was.

Glad to know the governor of PA had the flag lowered for Peres. Gov. Wolf seems like an okay guy

Asshole news reporters trying to put the "t" word in Chris Christie's mouth also infuriated me. Bless his heart, he didn't bite.

Re: Woman killed waiting for train in NJ

I used to go through this station every day for a number of years. I still use the station 2x per week, and I usually go to my company's Hoboken office on Thursdays. Because of a couple of factors I worked in our other Jersey office yesterday so I wasn't anywhere near Hoboken.

A few observations:
- I would have beaten this train in (I usually arrive at 8) so even if I had gone to Hoboken I would have been clear of the station when the accident happened. Getting home would have been a nightmare though.
- As far as I know, none of the injured were from my company, though a few folks from the job were in fact on that train.
- By stroke of luck (I guess), no other trains had just arrived, or there would have been hundreds or more in that hall where the train jumped the track. the accident spot is just a few strides from a popular entryway to the PATH train.
- The woman who died dropped her toddler off at a daycare center before heading to the station. I walk past that daycare each time I go to the office. Heartbreaking.
- There are I believe 17 tracks in that terminal so there is a lot of track switching going on while trains are pulling in to the station. Meaning the trains for the last quarter mile or so move at kind of a crawl. So when Christie says the train was going at a high rate of speed, I don't buy it. If it were going too fast (say over 30 MPH) the train probably would have derailed before it even got to the terminal, and if not probably would have traveled even further into the terminal. I guess it was going to fast for a normal entry into the terminal, but not "at a high rate of speed."
- There used to be a news/snack stand right where the train came to a stop. If still there, we probably would be talking about more fatalities.
- A friend who is a supervisor for the LIRR speculated at first (I mean, like at 9:30 AM yesterday) that it was engineer related, either a heart attack or perhaps he fell asleep at the switch. Since he's already out of the hospital I guess we can rule out heart attack.

Last I was there they have what's basically a tire. Maybe after this they'll add a second one.

Again just speaking for me, the gradual way this story unfolded made it something of a relief to learn there was only one fatality, no disrespect or lack of empathy to the woman.

This.

Left a toddler behind (just after actually leaving her behind, at day care), which always... unsettles.

Maybe the flag flew at half mast for Jose Fernandez.
