Hurricane Matthew

Currently hitting Haiti and not sounding pleasant. Good thoughts to Haitians, who have already been through more than enough.

My family near West Palm have these huge metal shutters that cover all the windows. Brother in law is an EMT and they're getting an emergency shelter ready.

The jokes I was making with my friend Matt last week seem somewhat tasteless today.

Mr. G on WPIX 11 seems hopeful that Matthew is going to take more of a southern/western track than originally thought. He'll have a better idea tomorrow, but at this point it's looking a bit better for the Tri-State Area than originally thought.

Sheena Parveen on NBC 10 in Philly confirms that the latest models indicate that Matthew looks like it will make a westward turn at the Carolinas.

do people really still watch the TV news for weather reports when more information is available instantly on the internet?
|
themetfairy Oct 07 2016 02:27 AM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
I do. I watch the NYC and Philly news for weather reports to get the analysis. I live between markets and the tv reports give me a much better idea about what to expect.

Nymr83 Oct 07 2016 04:41 AM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
You can follow the storm LIVE on Twitter with 90's rapper Vanilla Ice, who is setting a very bad example for fellow Floridians and riding out the storm in his beach house

Well, Vanilla Ice never struck me as being the sharpest knife in the drawer. This just enforces my perception.

Occassionally I leave my little portable tuned to 710 after the previous night's Mets game and at lunchtime make the mistake of encountering Rush Limbaugh. That there's morons out there believing there's a conspiracy behind the hurricane would require only a small step from the point at which that douchetard leads listeners. His theory is that connections between the National Weather Service and the US Department of Commerce result in a biased and agenda-driven perspective on NWS as a proponent of Global Warming Bullshitting, and the fact that a deadly hurricane hasn't arrived in 10 years but warnings of them have is seeming evidence that GW doesn't exist, but that Obama wants you to believe it does.

everything's a political statement. Actually I don't think "the government secretly manipulates the weather" is a new one, if that's what you mean. I actually watched some 'news/weather' on the television at Mazda yesterday. News12 NJ. was.. bad. I mean, I have a low bar for these things but they would be literally better off hiring people out of Rutgers to do it for credit and get better results. One lady was literally reading NJ transit notices off her phone for the camera.
|
metsmarathon Oct 07 2016 02:26 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
no, not that the government is controlling and/or causing the weather, but that the NWS is fudging the data to make the storm seem bigger and scarier and more powerful than it really is, specifically so that they can bolster the obama administration's claims that global warming is really real, and drive a stake through the heart of american industry and economy.

I'm getting information first-hand from Haiti that isn't yet public. This storm is real and its power has not been exaggerated.

2016 was the 3rd year (hard to believe it's been 3 years) of a 5-year deal.

If they can buy themselves out of a deal with Michael Cuddyer, they can buy themselves out of a deal with Mike Huckabee.

Ceetar Oct 07 2016 05:20 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
You could probably argue that the 'fan'base they reach on WOR is more ripe for the picking than the more insular WFAN. Well, is it really a ClearChannel vs Viacom thing?
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Oct 07 2016 07:07 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |

It would seem to be a cosy relationship from a marketing standpoint, as Mets shit is all over Clear Channel in NY (710 and Klassik Rawk Q104.3 to name 2 I hear). But yes it's highly disappointing to be on shitty radio

d'Kong76 Oct 07 2016 07:26 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
We'll have to stop raining on Matt's thread with some kind of split thing.
|
Rockin' Doc Oct 08 2016 03:55 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
Son and his fiance just arrived from Wilmington. At this point, Matthew is only projected to be a Cat. 1 Hurricane along the NC coast, but the eye is projected to hit Wilmington. Has been raining here since 2:00 PM yesterday afternoon. We are roughly 90 miles from the closes part of the coast.

Well, then if it is politically motivated and not a real threat, then the Republican governors of those Southern States should stick up for their principles and not accept FEMA aid. You know, that agency that is paid for by citizens who actually pay their taxes. Later

Edgy MD Oct 08 2016 07:07 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
It isn't state governors floating this notion.

I didn't say it was.

Rockin' Doc Oct 08 2016 10:17 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
Not concerned about wind damage at this point. It is the water and flooding that is the real problem. Large sections of I-95 are closed in South Carolina and southern North Carolina. Many local roads are under water and the rain continues to poor down. Not expected to stop until 8 or 9 AM tomorrow morning. At least the power has remained, though there are isolated pockets of outages in our area.

Nymr83 Oct 09 2016 01:39 AM Re: Hurricane Matthew |

that is an absurd argument - unless the federal government is going to stop taxing the citizens of those states as well.

Rockin' Doc Oct 09 2016 08:54 PM Re: Hurricane Matthew |
The rain stopped sometime overnight. Now the waiting begins, as the flood waters rise as the heavy widespread rains drain into the rivers and flow down stream. Hurricane Floyd in 1999 rewrote the flood maps with what was termed "the 500 year flood-stage". Projections for the flooding to come in the next few days is that the flooding from Matthew should be very close to the record levels seen in the wake of Floyd. Kinston and Fayetteville, NC are projected to break the records flood levels set following Floyd.
