To win the Nobel Prize for Literature

The 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."

Couldn't be happier. There were other good candidates bandied about this year, Murakami, DeLillo, the perpetual Philip Roth but as far as influence on our culture and lyrics that transformed what modern music can be, I don't think they could have made a better choice.

This makes you want to read a book of his lyrics.

But the amazing thing is that it is deeply American but transcends cultures also.

Up until Dylan, 6 of the 10 Nobel prizes awarded this year had gone to Americans, or more truthfully, immigrants to America, naturalized citizens or foreign nationals residing in the US. All of them. Bob Dylan, merely the grandson of immigrants, makes it 7 of 11.

Re: How does it feel?

Personally, I find Dylan to be a far better poet than musician. Well deserved by Bob.

I dispute that part as well but many feel that way.

Re: How does it feel?

Yeah, his imagery and metaphor and sense of heroic allegory (and heroic sense of allegory) is a bottomless well and an American treasure. But his rhyme and meter is for shit.

I have, and its not poetry. Lyrics are not poetry; they're lyrics. They're written with the intention of being accompanied by music. Poetry has its own music. But still, his imagery, characters, turns of phrase, are all worth any recognition he may receive. And i disagree with the view that he's not a good musician. He writes songs, not speeches, and those songs have stood the test of time. Even the criticism of him as a singer i think is somewhat overstated. No, his is not a beautiful voice, nor always right on the note, but its worn, world-weary, sardonic quality is totally expressive of the feelings his songs communicate, and he's usually (though not always) the best interpreter of his songs. I've been listening to my Dylan playlist all day and am quite happy to continue doing so today.

Re: How does it feel?

The reaction from Keith Richards to playing on the same bill with Bob Dylan during that recent desert music festival right as his Nobel nomination for Literature came through: "Now I want mine for Chemistry"
