Absolute last resort for us too. I do need to keep an eye on its fortunes for work and interestingly it's really morphing into a competitor of Starbucks as much as of Burger King, with the breakfast thing now growing like crazy and the burger biz lagging.

I don't think anyone goes there for the FISH. Maybe Cooby I guess.

Re: McDonalds

If I'm traveling - especially on a road trip where rest stops are my only viable option - I to to McDonald's for a grilled chicken salad and/or a fruit and yogurt parfait. I'm thankful that they provide me with a couple of reasonably healthy options that I can order without thinking about too much.

They're a food source of last resource, but I'm grateful that they're there when I need them.

From shady McDonald's secrets:

Its salads and oatmeal are unhealthier than their burgers

[fimg=533]http://img1.grunge.com/img/gallery/shady-secrets-mcdonalds-doesnt-want-you-to-know/its-salads-and-oatmeal-are-unhealthier-than-their-burgers.jpg[/fimg]

For some reason, enough people hit McDonald's with their health in mind for the company to make mad bank selling food meant to trim your waistline on the cheap. That sounds great, except that it's wrong in every conceivable way. The chicken kale Caesar salad, for example, clocks in at a cool 730 calories, 53 grams of fat, and 1,400 milligrams of sodium—numbers that absolutely should not be attached to a bunch of leaves. For comparison's sake, a Double Big Mac has 680 calories and 1,340 mgs of sodium, meaning they're touting a healthy salad that's unhealthier than their unhealthiest hunk of cow. But don't worry, you can skip the dressing, eat a plain dry salad, and save 200 calories, so now it's only unhealthier than a single Big Mac. Small victories are still victories.

For the breakfast crowd, McDonald's oatmeal has got you covered, and hornswoggled. Thanks to "fun" additives like cream, "natural flavor," and sugar, the McOatmeal clocks in at 290 calories, with 32 sugar grams. You would literally do better with candy for breakfast—a regular-size Snickers bar, for example, only has 280 calories and 30 grams of sugar. Plus, Snickers doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. You can trust a Snickers bar, unlike anything Ronald McDonald touts as good for your abs.

I go very light on the dressing. And in my experience a salad with protein fills me up for a longer time than a burger (unless you add the fries, at which point you've definitely gone down the unhealthy eating rabbit hole). Similarly, I have to believe that warm (or, knowing the source, semi-warm) oatmeal has to keep you satisfied longer than a candy bar.

As a follow up thought - when you're driving on the NYS Thruway or the Mass Pike and it's lunchtime and you're hours away from your destination, are there any healthy/lo cal/lo fat options available?

I'm not asking this to be facetious - I am always looking for healthy food suggestions in such situations.

This is not to say that the McDonald's salads are the greatest thing out there (even with the reasonable calorie count I'm sure the sodium is off the charts), but I'm hard pressed to think of a better option under those circumstances.

I haven't been to MickyDs in ages. There's a Burger King a stones throw away from here. McDonalds is up the pike a bit. And down the pike a bit. IIRC I did do the drive thru inside of the last 5 years or so.

I looooooved the Fish Filet.
Not the fish alone, nor the bun, or the tartar sauce(?) or whatever that was on it, but the way all of it tasted together. That's the only way I can explain it. It tasted a lot better than it looked.

And also the bacon.egg &cheese biscuits. That was my breakfast 75% of the time from age 30 to 40 (probably not the healthiest choice, lol).

The motivation for this has to do with the fact that fast-food joints because they're cheap and convenient overindex as a percent of meals for poor and ignorant people, and lower income people overindex for diet related illnesses that create public health hazards, raise everyone's insurance rates etc. Putting it on the restaurants to disclose how unhealthy their shit is challenges them to at least confront the cost to society of building a business behind nutritionally valueless food simply because its cheaper and more convenient to do so.

I am also philosophically in favor of taxing gigantic single-serve sugary beverage for that reason. While it could help raise $$ to support the cost to society of obesity, its really the only way to pressure dubious "food" producers to consider the cost to society of their business.

All that said, I think McDonald's would probably make an easy billion by returning to frying their fries in beef tallow, if only for a short time, the way the soda companies have done limited run of "real sugar" colas vs. cheaper and possibly less healthy corn-syrup sweeteners.

And I must admit to something that will probably gross everyone out, because it does with family & friends.
I put a lil dollop of ketchup on the tarter sauce stuff and mix it together and...............DELICIOUS!

I don't know if anyone ever notice me and my fish but I put ketchup on almost any food that is hot. Ketchup on mashed potatoes usually sends the room into gross-out mode.

I really can't find anything appetizing on the McDonald's menu these days. They've dropped their Angus and Swiss burger and stopped with Lobster rolls in September (not surprising on the latter). Their burgers are all the same, their salads weak, and the less said about chicken nuggets, the better.

The Egg McMuffin is the only thing that has any appeal -- they're actually the most healthy breakfast you can get at a fast-food place.

" I see where the McDonalds near me changed its sign from "One Million sold to Two Million sold". I guess that means they've used anther 50 pounds of chop meat."

Re: McDonalds

So today I kept an old promise I'd made and took my kid cousin shopping for a birthday present I promised him but reneged on for many months out of laziness and inertia. He's not really a kid cousin -- he's more of a young adult and not even in his 20's anymore. But I still see him as a kid because he has the grossest and most undeveloped and unsophisticated eating habits I ever saw on any adult I ever met. He eats like a nine year old, and has no curiosity or interest in expanding his culinary tastes. He probably pronounces filet mignon like crazy Annie (I'm your favorite fan) Wilkes pronounces Dom Perignon (Puhrr-rig-non).

So I braced myself a little bit when I asked him where he wanted to eat lunch, figuring he just might take me to the frozen food section of a supermarket because he might be in the mood for unthawed cheesy tater tots or something like that. Anyways, McDonald's was his choice which I could tolerate but wasn't in the mood for today because the day before, I went out for a top quality cheeseburger that was so sublime, the taste of that burger was still in my mouth a day later and I knew I would ruin that sensation with the McDonald's.

So long story short, the Grand Macs are out! They weren't advertised on any of the posters on the McDonald's windows and weren't even on the electronic menus behind the counters. Instead, they appeared on one of the HD electronic displays that features images of McD products -- images that change every 10 seconds or so. I asked the cashier how long they were out (since last week) and if they were a top secret being that they weren't on the menu ( she shrugged and smiled and that was her non-verbal response).

I ordered a Grand Mac and a Grand Mac Jr. I liked the junior better -- the ratio of meat to bun was more to my liking. But overall, I was disappointed -- not in the new Macs but in the overall McD experience and I might be avoiding McDonald's for the foreseeable future.

This McDonald's talk reminds me that THE FOUNDER with Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc opens this weekend.
No idea if it's going to be any good or not but Keaton usually is anyway.

On the whole topic of adults being dragged there by kids (of whatever age): golfer Jack Nicklaus had five children and, as was typical for his era, married early (age 20) and started the family almost immediately so he had a growing brood during the entire length of his pro career. As the kids grew a tradition developed in the clan where, if he won a tournament, the choice of location for the family's celebratory dinner rotated among each child. The story Jack tells is that following one win in either the US Open or the Masters it was the youngest's turn to pick and, being a kid, he insists on McDonalds. So there, following one of history's greatest golfers winning one of its greatest championships, sits the Nicklaus family in the molded plastic chairs of some roadside Mickey Dees squirting ketchup out of the squeeze packets - presumably with the trophy and the oversized check sitting in the car out in the parking lot.

Re: McDonalds

I think the rule is that the movie has to play for a week in either NYC or LA during the calendar year to be Oscar eligible so, unless this opened for a limited (and almost secret) run several weeks ago, January is a very UN-Oscar time to release anything since it'll be forgotten by the time nominations are announced more than a year from now. The announcement for this year's noms are due next week and I think, like the BB-HoF, all ballots have already been cast.

'Rotten Tomatoes' is trending thumbs up on THE FOUNDER right now but there's sure to be a flood of new opinion still coming in.

CHICAGO, March 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ wrote:
Redefining Convenience through Delivery

One of the most significant disruptions in the restaurant business today is the rapid increase in delivery. Through technology, delivery has changed the way customers order, pay, track and receive food and provide feedback. Coupled with the explosive growth in third-party delivery companies, the landscape has created an exceptional opportunity for growth.

Because of our extraordinary footprint, McDonald's is uniquely positioned to become the global leader in delivery. In McDonald's top five markets (U.S., France, the U.K., Germany and Canada) nearly 75% of the population lives within three miles of a McDonald's. McDonald's is already one of the largest providers of delivered food in the world, with annual Systemwide delivery sales of nearly $1 billion across various markets including China, South Korea and Singapore. China has tripled its delivery business since its launch in 2008. In 2016 alone, China's delivery business grew 30%.

No other food company in the world has this reach and ability to be this convenient to so many customers through delivery. Currently, McDonald's is experimenting with different delivery models including partnering with third parties for ordering and fulfillment throughout the world.

Re: McDonalds

http://www.scarymommy.com/8-year-old-dr ... mcdonalds/

Remember when you were a kid and you really wanted McDonald’s but your parents wouldn’t take you so you just hopped in the car and drove yourself? Wait, what? One famished kid didn’t let his lack of driver’s license, or general knowledge of vehicle operations stop him from realizing his dreams. He wanted a cheeseburger, dammit, and he was going to get himself a cheeseburger.

An eight-year-old boy from East Palestine, Ohio was craving a cheeseburger over the weekend and didn’t want to wake his sleeping parents. (Which, in and of itself, should make this child a national hero.) Instead of moping around the house, he took matters into his own hands and looked up “how to drive a car” on YouTube.

Yep, you read that right.

“He probably looked it up for five minutes and then said it was time to go,” East Palestine police officer Jacob Koehler told the Morning Journal News. That’s when he did what any responsible older sibling would do–he threw his four-year-old sister in the car with him and headed off. We can only assume so he didn’t take the fall for the crime alone. Because, if I’m going down for this one sis, you’re going down with me. Now be quiet and there may be some nuggets in it for you.

Police were called to the McDonald’s when the pair rolled up to the drive-thru window in their parents’ van, news station WFMJ reported. Witnesses who saw the boy driving told police that he drove to the fast food restaurant like a seasoned professional, following all traffic laws and staying under the speed limit.

This kid taught himself how to drive from YouTube, of course he obeyed all traffic laws.

“He didn’t hit a single thing on the way there. It was unreal,” Koehler said. The total distance the ravenous miniature Bonnie and Clyde drove was about a mile and a half in total. McDonald’s workers said they thought they were being Punk’d when the kids drove up to the drive-through to order the cheeseburger with money from his piggy bank. Where are you hiding, Ashton Kutcher? Seriously, it’s not funny to put children behind the wheel of a car.

Police said the poor kid burst into tears when he found out he’d done something wrong. He did mention to officers that it was his first time behind the wheel but probably left out that he’d piloted a prop plane to Florida the weekend before because he wanted some fish tacos.

Police aren’t filing charges and have said this isn’t a case of parental neglect. The kids had already been fed breakfast, lunch and dinner but just “really wanted a cheeseburger.” We’ve all been there, kid.

The siblings’ efforts weren’t all for naught — the nice folks at McDonald’s gave the pair a cheeseburger, chicken nuggets and fries while they waited for family to arrive. It goes without saying, we’re relieved the kids are safe and hope like crazy they never pull a stunt like this again.

In the meantime, someone keep an eye on this kid. He’s going places. Literally.

I think the bigger problem here is that an eight year-old decided the only way to go a mile and a half away and get his cheeseburger fix was to hock the car.
