THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2016

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year for 2016 is first-time winner YOENIS CESPEDES. His total of 90.62 points is the lowest winning sum in the CPF's Schaefer history.

Thanks to those who participated!

This year, since all votes were stored in database tables, we're able to award our first "perfect participation" awards. There were four forum members who voted in every game, and as a result G-Fafif, TMF, Benjamin Grimm, and OhSheaCanKC will all receive a virtual copy of this lovely button:

Wear it with virtual pride!

(Also, we'll be sending a virtual box of Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco Treat, to Ashie62, to thank him for almost achieving this honor. He voted in 160 of the 162 games!)

Honorable mention to Johnny and TransMonk (138 games each), Zvon (95 games) and LWFS (62 games).

Thank you, but it really wasn't such hard work. (If it was hard, I wouldn't do it!)

But that reminds me that I meant to say that the new system that was introduced this year made things much easier than they were before. Instead of spending a few minutes per day I'm now spending a few minutes per month. As a result, I'm officially announcing that Schaefer will resume in 2017 for its 13th season!

Yeah, this is just terrific work. I'm amazed that you are able to do this year after year. Thanks BG. I promise to vote more next year.

Love the Cespedes card. The look on his face makes it seem like he knows he just won player of the year.

As to the results themselves, no surprise on the winners. A little surprised that Granderson is as high as he is, but I think this is a testament to his durability.

Seriously? Rice-a-Roni? A reference to San Francisco? I suspect someone in marketing is going to lose their job over this gaffe.

Not cool Stockholm. Not cool.

Yoenis Céspedes, Player of the Year while never winning Player of the Month.

If game 163 counted, Syndergaard would have taken it.

I was going to say that all of those folks need names, or titles, or at least nicknames of some sort.
I mean some already have names, Casey is Casey and Paul Schefer is easily identifiable and I'm not suggesting that we give Henry VIII or Boticelli's Venus new monikers here.
But I think if these folks are going to be spokes-folks for an important CPF project then they should be known as something other than 'Octopus Fighter' or 'Girl with Flower in Hair'.

So I think suggestions are in order here although our beloved Backpack Girl will forever be known as Backpack Girl and I'll fight anyone who tries to say otherwise.

Although I kept buying cards out of habit until the early 1990s, the 70s were the only decade in which I was really into them. The years that I'm most nostalgic for are 1971 through 1973, when my age ranged from eight to ten.

Same here, 70 to 77, when Seaver moved on, I decided to grow up. And then Mookie (around '80) came up and I was tempted to get in touch with my inner child. But that wasn't enough. Strawberry had me at least grabbing a few packs in 84 (I wasn't aware of traded sets until around 1986). When Doc came up in 84 I dived backward into my childhood and went crazy collecting his cards. And then all the Mets. That reignited my collecting bug. I didn't hurt that the Mets were fielding a great team those years.

That dimmed thru the '90s as the hobby became a bit of a circus (now it's WAAAAAAAY beyond that). And then with Matt Harvey in 2013,..it was like with Doc in 1985. Then all these new pitchers coming up that were showing so much promise, I had to try and get those rookie cards. I didn't go crazy. A blister here, a blister there.

I've done good as far as regular issue cards go. Don't care much for the more recent fancy stuff (parallels and relics and whatnot). If I get one great, if I don't, I don't. As far as Mets go, I usually don't. But when I do it's a kool rush.

I'm to the point I think I'll start to ween myself off the hobby again. I don't like that it's marketed towards older folks like you & I w/$$ to burn instead of kids (well, rich kids can get into it). Topps don't give a shit. They are laughing all the way to the bank. For now.

When the children of today grow up Topps will have to shift gears. They won't be buying baseball cards. I see creepy clown cards in the future.

There is. Trading cards in general, I think.
Before baseball cards (age 9,10,11) I collected Rat Patrol, Outer Limits, Man From Uncle cards, and those Batman cards that were all paintings. I also had some kind of Monster cards. Not the TV show. Movie Monsters? I vaguely remember these. I'll have to do a google.

I started collecting baseball cards in 1961, when I found about 50 out them on the sidewalk. I took it as a sign and collected seriously through the 60s. I still kept buying a few packs each year, and picked up representatives of Tools from every year they were made (except for 1951 blue backs, which were too expensive). I stopped after 1994.

I don't care for modern cards; the glossy backs are just plain wrong.

Thanks! The "new life" appears to have been successful. There was a chance that it would cause a decline in participation, but that didn't happen. We seem to have had an increase that was sustained until about the last month of the season, when the Mets started playing well and voters, apparently, stopped paying attention! Either way, I'm satisfied that this will be worthwhile continuing into 2017.

I believe I kept up. Its a matter of pride.

You missed two games: May 23 and July 28.

Next year I am giving 6 points only to the player who did us the most good, as in the PLAYER of the game.

I'm not sure what that means. Are you saying that for each and every game you're going to give 6 points to one player and none to anybody else? If that's your plan I'll have to ask you to please not do that. It's not in the spirit of Schaefer and, with so few voters, would abnormally skew the results. I'm afraid I'd have to treat such votes as extreme outliers and discard them, and I really don't want to have to do that.

I agree, 6's are for special game performances like a one hitter through eight or
three homers or six RBI or something.

No sweat. I will spead it out.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2016

I can't recall the last time I put out a 6. Santana?
I'm not adverse to it, it's just that you really have to work to get a 6 from me. A pitcher goes 82/3 of shutout ball....
5.9999

If he K's 10 or more (for 82/3) he might get that 6.
Batters really got it rough. I always try to give a reliever something. Pinch hitters as well, if they do their job.
The PH had one job. If he gets a hit he gets a full point from me usually.

See, I'm a difficult dick, but I'm a considerate dick.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2016

This chart shows who awarded 6 points in a game during the 2016 season. The last column indicates the actual number of points that the player ended up getting for that game.

So I did it twice, once for Syndergaard in May and once for deGrom in July.
