Biggest surprise - that Maddon lost to Dave Roberts while getting just half as many 1st place votes? OR - that Dusty Baker was named on more total ballots (26 of 30) than was Joe Maddon (22)? OR - that Terry got two first place votes and five in the top two?

It may well be that Terry Collins is a pretty good manager. There are lots of things to that job that we can't really see or understand. They talk about having the players want to play for a guy, keeping the clubhouse happy, player relationships. All of those things. We are told Terry is great at that. And he probably is. I've not heard of even one guy rumored to have issued with Terry during his time here. How unusual is that? He's pretty good with the media, seems to legitimately want to win. All good things. It's just that he seems pretty bad at the X's and O's, and that is the only real tangible thing we can measure him on.

Not disputing 'pretty bad' but I think that level is still comfortably average, if not a tick above. I've found I like his decisions more when he's got good players (even beyond the obvious hey they're good stuff) because he seems to trust guys more to just 'be good'. It's when he tries to force and manufacture that I get annoyed mostly. Of course this stuff is usually a factor of record vs expected record too. for the IBWAA I put Farrell, Francona, Showalter and Collins,Maddon,Mattingly. strong NL East bias

Showalter and Maddon were just crazy. Francona and Roberts were better.

I seem to have -- based on extremely UN-scientific survey results -- less 'Xs & Os' beefs with Terry than your average NYM fan, and sometimes I think all it takes is a longer exposure to out of town managers (as during playoff series) to make folks realize that all the questions they have about their own guy aren't going to magically disappear if/when he's replaced. That said, I'm not sure I would have guessed that he'd get five 1st and 2nd place votes especially coming in a season where there were three superior teams and one historic one. I guess I just assumed that Maddon was going to take this (and, yes, I realize that it doesn't include post-season) so I was really surprised that he got out-voted 2-1 at the top of the ballot.

Cubs were a powerhouse and Mets were decimated by injuries. so Maddon was expected to win 100 games and did, so.. Collins is respected by voters, might be retiring. if the Mets make the playoffs next year expect him to win it.
