I would now like to hear your WATP
A Boy Named Seo Nov 16 2016 09:50 PM |
I say let's trade Robert Gsellman and some crapper - say, Tim Tebow - to the Rangers for Jurickson Profar.

I think one time I may have dangled a AA Noah Syndergaard for that Purickson Jofar guy and regretted that WATP.

Yeah, deep in my pitch, I advocated moving Wilmer for a live, bullpen arm. How about San Diego's hulky and boringly-named lefty Brad Hand? Weirdly broke out to the tune of 11.2 K/9 last year, while the previous 5 years he averaged 5.9. Mets get a high-K bullpen arm, and Wilmer gets to live closer to the 'Friends' set on the WB lot in Burbank.

Lucas Duda, Dominic Smith, Marcos Molina, and Eric Goeddel for Joey Votto.

I know you can't trade someone on the DL, but how does that work after

That contract is ridiculous. I think you wouldn't have to give up all that much for Votto.

Yeah it is, but that's a goddamn Wild-Ass Trade Proposal right there! Entering his age 33 season and owed $172M for the next 7 years (!), plus that option Edgy mentioned. I would think that $24.5M per year would scare us away, rightfully so. Reds be crazy.

The DL is closed right now, and all players are treated as active. I figure, yeah, crazy contract, but he's still productive, so it hasn't particularly depreciated yet (look what Fangraphs thinks he's been worth from year to year), AND it's not backloaded, so his cost in real dollars goes down toward the end of the contract, AND I'm trading them damaged goods. AND his brand has receded in the Harper/Trout era, even if he's still pretty devastating in his batsmanship. AND he's the perfect guy for this lineup, even if we have little idea how long that would last. Scared by $24.5 million per season over seven years? Sure, life is perilous, but it looks like they're about to offer north of $30 million to Yoenis Céspedes and his hinky leg and golfer's tendons over five, so who's crazy NOW, playa?!! Big time baseball management is a game fraught with RISK! It's wild, and it's ass, but it's my trade proposal to do with as I see fit.

And you know what I think of when I think of trading with teams desperate to get out of an overzealous commitment to their lefthanded firstbaseman who bats third? I think of John Olerud.

We might need to surrender Doodoo and Matz, but I'm listening.
|
Edgy MD Nov 17 2016 03:29 AM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
If Votto tanks, then I get fired. Simple as that. Two sluggers in a row from the Reds come to Flushing and eat it? Along with George Foster? They'd never deal with the Reds again.
|
d'Kong76 Nov 17 2016 03:49 AM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
Only someone with Votto on their roto team would be pushing this UWATP.
|
Centerfield Nov 17 2016 04:46 AM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
Also has a full no trade clause. So you'd have to overcome that.

How dare you suggest I have a roto team.

Centerfield Nov 17 2016 05:01 AM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
I logged on with the intent to post that if you are going to go with an expensive 33 year old first baseman, go the "cheap" route and sign Encarnacion. He is looking for 5 years, $125 million. Similar production, but fewer years and you get to keep your prospects. But the numbers don't bear it out.

i'll take that Votto deal, WATP or no. With our projected rotation over the next 3 years, he'd be the perfect fit to get us over the hump (with Cespedes). After that, its a rebuild anyway.

Matz and Grandy for Chris Sale and David Robertson.

you won't be able to hang up faster than the White Sox GM.

A Boy Named Seo Nov 29 2016 11:16 PM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
Yeah, but I like the idea. If we had a Michael Fulmer still, that might help kick it over the top. I would add Gsellman, Nimmo, and TEBOW and see if he still slams the phone down.
|
Zvon Nov 30 2016 12:53 AM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
I like Gsellman alot. Lugo too, but I think I'd dangle him out there first.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 30 2016 02:47 AM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
Votto, if he hits like Votto, would be awesome in this lineup. You could hit Walker 8th if you wanted.
|
Edgy MD Nov 30 2016 04:27 AM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
Yeah, huh? No interest in Votto? He wins the OBP crown like every year. This is Joey Votto we're talking about, not Joey Cora. I mean, he's pie in the sky. But it's my sky. And he's sweet pie.

To each their own. I think Votto in NY, at this point in his career, is not worth any of our pitchers (for position players I'd be more enthused). It's what I call an opinion. Personally I don't think he has the makeup to play in The Big Apple.
Do please explain that one. All Bruce had to do was continue producing. He is also a player I fear cannot handle playing in NYC. I will happily eat my words if he is still here in 2017 and puts up Jay Bruce type numbers for a whole season in NY.
|
Edgy MD Nov 30 2016 01:06 PM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
Well, my WATP included Lucas Duda, Dominic Smith, Marcos Molina, and Eric Goeddel, so there was very little taken from the pitching side of the roster. It was very WA that way.
|
A Boy Named Seo Dec 01 2016 05:53 PM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
Jay Bruce -> Blue Jays for CF prospect Anthony Alford, + LHRP Aaron Loup

The Reds are up a creek on catching. Sign Matt Wieters for two years and add Travis d'Arnaud to the Joey Votto package they're secretly building.

At first read, this was a WATP. But after thinking about it, the WA drops off. Pretty good. Later

This was actually meant to be in the WATP thread. Moving now.

Is Mesoraco hurt again?
|
Edgy MD Jan 26 2017 04:17 PM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
I think that he's missed enough time time that his future—and his future as a catcher—seem very much up in the air. One season ended by hip surgery followed by another ended by a torn labrum, with only 39 games between the two years—that sounds like a huge question mark.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 26 2017 05:34 PM Re: I would now like to hear your WATP |
I guess the question is though, why not just sign Weiters if you're the Reds then.

Williams is apparently a "new school" GM who probably understands what he's got in Votto; he was assisting Jocketty for the last several years now runs the show himself and has spoken boastingly of the analytical firepower he's ready to unleash on the league.
