Rule 5 Draft
Vic Sage Nov 17 2016 10:26 PM |
Tomorrow is the deadline for setting the 40-man roster. The Mets currently have 34 players on the 40-man roster, leaving 6 open spots. The following players are eligible for Rule V draft. Which ones do they protect? Do they leave slots open for free agents?

Good stuff here Vic. It's a nice problem to have--having good prospects that you want to keep who other teams might want to take from you. Champ Stuart is interesting (Edgy can talk about him with more knowledge than I can). He's a speed guy in a slow organization and he is a good CFer. He didn't hit in AA but had a strong WBC series for Britain and he seems to be playing well in Arizona (per Rubin: Stuart .300/.329/400).

the gamble is always on whether you protect guys like Nido and Becerra, who have big upside but clearly arent' ready to play in the majors yet (so you figure they won't stay on anybody's 25-man roster), or guys with more limited potential but who are in AA and AAA, and may be able to contribute to a team now. I like a guy like Taijeron, and would've liked to see him get some ABs at CitiField last year, or at least work at 1b in Vegas. But i doubt he's going to get protected, because of his age, high K rate, and a lackluster glove. Yet he may well get picked off over a guy like Becerra who is more potential than production so far, and is still quite young. Still, some team may be able to pick him and just red shirt him at the end of their bench for a year. Then, if Taijeron is the AAAA player he seems, and if Becerra becomes what he can, we'll be kicking ourselves for years. So you have to protect Becerra over Taijeron in that scenario

The New York Mets have added top prospect Amed Rosario, outfielder Wuilmer Becerra, catcher Tomas Nido, and right-handed pitchers Chris Flexen, and Marcos Molina to the 40-man roster

Phil Evans and Ricky Knapp are looking exposed.

I've long felt like Taijeron could be a useful part for someone. A Mark Carreon-type of 250 AB/12 HR bench/platoon OF kind of guy.

They might lose Sewald who has been excellent in the AFL.

High-strikeout, low-walk reliever who held his own in a brutal hitting environment? Sewald is EXACTLY the kind of guy who gets snapped up in Rule 5. I'd be a little surprised if he didn't, really.

Had a great half season out of the pen for St. Lucie, but then was promoted to Bingo and got utterly lit up. Lit up like a sparkle pony.

Another LHP, Adrian Almeda, goes to the Angels in the 2nd round of the AAA phase ... and that's it. The Rule 5 Draft has left the building!
|
Edgy MD Dec 08 2016 03:15 PM Re: Rule 5 Draft |
Almeida? That's a scratcher. Good strikeout rates, but not knock-you-on-your-pants numbers or anything, and TERRIBLE walk rates. And has thrown all of 2 1/3 innings above Kingsport. That's a project for sure. Good luck, Angels.

Does the AAA phase mean that the drafted player has to stay on the AAA roster all season or get offered back to the original club?

It used to. But not anymore. Those two are gone.

A nice surprise for the Mets not to lose Sewald or Evans. Meanwhile, the MFY's lost 4 players in the 1st round (note Edgy's parenthetical comments). Tough break, so sorry.

Most Rule 5 picks don't stick anyway so odds would suggest that the Yanx are likely to get at least three of those guys (or something equivalent) back by next spring. The Padres entered today with just 33 guys on their 40-man roster and, by the time the dust had cleared this morning, wound up with each of the first three in the ML R5 draft, one pick of their own plus they acquired each of the next two in trades. Not a coincidence, I don't think, that the two teams most prominently breaking things down this year and making the decision to start all over -- talking here about the Padres and the ChiSox -- were the same two who tried going from zero to sixty in the shortest time possible a couple of years back via FA picks and deals for "name" players.
