Re: Memories of Eric Campbell

He seemed like a hard working good guy. He played hard whenever he was needed, but always made us wish we had somebody better.

Re: Memories of Eric Campbell

He replaced Josh Satin as the reserve infielder who was more bat than glove. Satin had replaced Justin Turner. All three initially hit like big leaguers, and then lost their stroke through extended periods of patience.

Turner would go on to find full time work and become an all-star. Satin hit .182 as an El Paso Chihuahua this season and retired at 31. Keeping your stroke as a young bench player is hard. Figuring out which ones will be able to keep it is hard also.

Now the role belongs to Wilmer Flores, and it may get transferred to T.J. Rivera before the year is out.

Re: Memories of Eric Campbell

Execs were right when they cited his hard-hit rate as an advantage, only to see fans mock Campbell for being saddled with that quality when the results didn't follow. Probably an adequate reserve 1B/3B in real life, exposed when asked to do too much.

Followed Ike Davis in a long line of ultimately disappointing No. 29s going as far back as Steve Trachsel.

Re: Memories of Eric Campbell

I think you are misremembering a bit on Turner. Turner was outperforming Campbell by just under 200 points in OPS at the ends of their respective Met careers. With the ability to fake it at short, he was still a useful player.

I remember Eric Campbell sucked and I didn't like him.

Re: Memories of Eric Campbell

Made a really good catch against the Dodgers as an outfielder shortly after he came up in 2014, same game that Puig made a better catch, I believe.

Got a big hit in the game that was followed by Huey Lewis's set at Citi Field. Chris Young hit a home run that day, too.

Made a great play at first in September this year.

0-for-0 with three runs scored in Steven Matz's debut.

And then he was gone.

The better comparison would be with Joe McEwing, who turned two good months into a much longer stay than his overall numbers warranted.

I liked Cambell. Didn't love him, and he was disappointing towards the end, but I thought he was awright.

Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound, ladies and gentlemen. Hanley Ramirez at the plate.

Yeah, that's nice, but could he throw?

Ask Jayson Werth.

Here we get it all: Chris Young's biggest moment as a Met, heroics off the bench from Campbell, Daisuke Matsuzaka coming up big, hot leather flashed by Daniel Murphy, outstanding execution on a suicide squeeze by Ruben Tejeda, and Tom Koehler displaying all the bumbling buffoonery that is the hallmark of a SUNY Stony Brook education.

Re: Memories of Eric Campbell

I remember seeing him as a B-Met and had high hopes for him in the bigs that he never lived up to.

I wish him well in Japan.

Sheesh, who's looking like an ill-educated brute now?

It's now fixed, in my post above and in yours. At least, I think it is.

We teach that "fall down on the mound" move. It's kind of our thing.
