Memories of Logan Verrett

I remember him pitching in Colorado in August 2015 so that Matt Harvey could get some extra rest. Despite my fears Verrett pitched beautifully and helped the Mets complete the sweep of the Rockies (the first two games being the Uniclone 14-9 victories).

I think he served us well and stepped up to start a few times when we really needed some pitching.

It was mostly downhill after his splendid 2015 Colorado start.

Crazy journey to get to that start. Rule V pick grabbed by the Orioles in December, he gets farmed out by Baltimore just before the start of the season in early April. Of course, they have to offer him back to the Mets in order to do so, but before that happens, he has to clear waivers, and he doesn't. The Rangers grab him and store him in the back of their pitching staff.

In a month with Texas, he gets into only four games. One where they are down 6-0 in the fourth, on where he enters in the 13th after the team has exhausted all other options, one in which he enters with a 10-2 deficit, and a last one which is the closest thing to a competitive appearance the Texans would give him, a 5-1 game.

You try to carry your Rule 5 guys, but he is being buried almost as deeply as 2010 Oliver Peréz. So Texas decides they need that spot for a player they trust a little more than him (Alex Hassan, as it turns out), and he gets offered back to the Mets.

So the Mets, unlike the Orioles and Rangers, are clearly bound by no obligation to keep him on the major league roster. And since those teams, with nothing like the pitching depth of the Mets, couldn't carry him, there's no reason to expect him to see the bigs again in 2015.

Except he. And in the magical late summer and early autumn of the 2015 Mets, when everything fell into place, everything fell into place for Verrett. He joined the team in mid June and gave up but a single earned run in 12 1/3 innings, pitching out of the bullpen. He even gained a goofy save, pitching the last three innings of an 8-0 win.

He goes down when the roster pinches, but he gets called up to make a spot start and throws eight innings of one-run ball. In Colofuckinrado! Who could doubt that the stars were aligned?

No fucks were given taking No. 35 only hours after Dillon Gee was humiliatingly designated. That filled me with CAHNfidence about him and there's no doubt he was damn good in '15. I dunno what happened to him this year.

He was no Kelly Stinnett, but I dig Mets who have last names ending with two Ts.

When we were overloaded with awesome pitching, then this guy comes along and throws several strong starts, I thought of him as the Seventh Beatle. Eventually he fell behind Gabriel Ynoa on the depth chart.
