An announcement is rolling out over the digitalscape that Jacob deGrom will meet the media tomorrow at 10:45 at Citi Field. And if anybody knows why, they ain't saying.

Re: deGrom News

My Spidey sense tells me this is more likely to be bad news than good news.

My sense is it's something about his recovery from surgery. On the other hand, I'm hoping it's something nice, like he's announcing a new charitable endeavor.

Worries here. But would Jake need to be the one to announce an injury setback?

Long-term deal? Also, 10:45? Why not 11:00?

Don't knock it. It spares us 15 minutes of suspense.

He better be announcing that he's playing Santa this year. I want him book-ended by Jeff and Sandy, he can slip on the Santa outfit, smile for pics, THE END.

Because 10:45 begs the question, 'Why 10:45?', and therefore everyone makes sure to be there by 10:45 to find out why 10:45

Legendary University of Oregon track coach (and Nike co-founder) Bill Bowerman was apparently known for calling team meetings for times such as 8:37 and the above is a paraphrased version of his answer as to why the odd time.

New hairdo, perhaps. I don't think it's anything ominous.

Re: deGrom News

I tuned in late. No idea what it was about. They were just talking about stuff. It was very enjoyable and both Jacob and Darling were pretty funny, but I have no idea what the reason for the conference was.

OE: It was a really nice interview, basically. Catch it if you can because it was funny and informative.

Re: deGrom News

I have no idea where the original "news" of this scheduled presser came from, but I see no mention of it in the usual NYM-related blog-a-verse [Rubin, tabloids, Cerone]

Re: deGrom News

The "news" came from from a buncha beat guys tweeting.

The chat was exactly like a lot of the traditional "season ticket holders meet ballplayers and broadcasters and hopefully renew their package" chats. But I don't think that's what it was, so much as the Mets experimenting with FB Live.

Re: deGrom News

Recovery going well. He can tell he feels better even though he hasn't thrown yet, but expects to throw soon. Mets haven't approached him about a contract extension. The informal press conference went down in home the locker room, which is kind of cool, in that he's seemingly in front of his locker, as if that's where he's most comfortable talking.

Syndergaard should probably play Santa every year.

Uh-oh-ho-ho. Playing Santa is a curse. Syndergaard should stay far away.

And he'll never be able to top this anyway.

Don't press the issue. The Wifey Watch archives suggest that Noah has had some salty paramours.

Mets may try to lock up Jacob deGrom long term

Mike Puma wrote:
An industry source confirmed Thursday that the Mets may explore the possibility this winter of a deal that would buy out the right-hander’s remaining arbitration years and extend club control for additional seasons. FanRag Sports first reported the possibility.

The 29-year-old deGrom is set to hit the free-agent market following the 2020 season. But the two sides could negotiate a four- or five-year deal that would keep deGrom with the Mets beyond the next three seasons.

Mets considering giving Jacob deGrom a contract extension

From The New York Post:

Mike Puma wrote:
A club source indicated Tuesday that general manager Sandy Alderson may still engage deGrom’s camp in negotiations at some point this winter. DeGrom is under club control through 2020, making it likely the Mets would seek a five-year deal that would buy out his three remaining arbitration years. The Mets would then receive a team-friendly contract for two added years of control.

So, if this happens, will the raise he gets for 2018 cut into the $30-40 million that Alderson has to play with or is that considered separate?

Re: deGrom News

I don't think we should take that $30-40 million as a hard truth, but of course any additional moneys he gets is applied to the same budget.
