Winter 2016/2017

Today I finished planting my daffodils, brought in my house plants, set up a little heated cat house for the stray that hangs out in our yard, locked the pool gates and put away the pool stuff, and pretty much got everything ready for winter, under sunny skies and balmy weather.
By the time we finished it was about 40 degrees and the wind was blowing, hard.

Re: Winter 2016

I enclosed the bird feeder in a 10x10 corral of chicken wire, hopefully creating a safe space for them to snack protected from the nu neighbor's cat. We woke up to carnage two days ago, and Ms. Edgy wanted me hammering a pen together before the ground froze.

Find out your local hypothermia hotline (sometimes it's just 311 or 211) and program it into your phone. Days like this, where a warm afternoon is followed by rapid drop to freezing overnight temperature, takes a lot of homeless by surprise. If you see somebody out there, call that hotline.

F'n snow.
At least it covers the leaves on my lawn that my lawn service hasn't cleaned yet.

Re: Winter 2016

I did leaves on Wed (city picked up on Thur) and mowed lawn one last time
yesterday. When the front pushed through last night it was kinda bizarre out
with the wind and buckets of rain seemingly out of nowhere. Woke up to some
snow that wasn't predicted this far south. What a racket, these weather peeps.

Re: Winter 2016

Shoveled a good 3-4" of wet, heavy snow out of my driveway tonight. Forecast is for 6" overnight and another 6" Monday into Tuesday. Hello winter!

On the other hand, got a nice 7 mile run in this morning in the inclement weather. Nothing that can't be overcome with proper outdoor attire.

That's funny. It's not even really freak out worthy for what we'd normally be in for this time of year.

gonna need more than that if Lake Erie is attacking. Vaporizer maybe.

Winter used to have occasional 'cold spells'. We still have them, only now it's called a 'polar vortex'.
That sounds more like needless complication than it does anything resembling progress.

Re: Winter 2016

So yeah, the weather may suck and is likely to get worse for the next two months, but we've hit the spot where sunset times have turned around and are starting to get later.
On account of the earth not being a perfect sphere, the sunset times start to turn around in the northern hemisphere even as the sunrise times continue to get later. So even though it's still another week before we hit the shortest amount of daylight for the year, at least you're getting a couple of extra seconds per day on the afternoon side.
Sunsets bottomed out in NYC anyway at 4:28 on December 7th. By tomorrow it'll be way up to 4:30 and you can then tack an extra minute on every couple of days after that.

So we got that going for us anyway. And from there it's only a matter of time until Opening Day.

Yeah we're forecast for 3-6" today and squalls and sub zero temps. I may do my evening run indoors tonight on my gym track, not because the cold bothers me terribly, but more because I worry about cars slipping around on the roads in proximity to me.

Already about 5 or 6 inches of snow on the ground and its just starting to change to sleet. The town plow has only come through once or twice, the last time a few hours ago.
Amy Freeze, the channel 7 weather person said this morning we could look for the top of the projections. The prediction was 3-5 inches for my area, so I guess they got it kinda' right.
BTW, how great is it that a weather person's name is Freeze?

I have a cousin in northern Virginia who went out and bought a really big snow plow right after that area got hit by three separate blizzards in about a six-week time-frame, aka: 'Snowmageddon' in I think it was Dec-Feb 2009-10.
The problem is that D.C. averages about 15"/year and the western suburbs only somewhat above that. I believe it was three years later before he finally used it.

Got up at five, no news. Really, half the rest of western PA had already put parents, teachers, and kids out of their misery. Not my daughter's SD!!! But by 5:20, after I showered, it was closed.

Really, huh? I drove from NJ to Cleveland yesterday. I passed through central PA at around 6:30 and there was absolutely nothing. Some flurries in far western PA at around 10.

Slightly overcast and chilly here. Some remnants of a storm that hit last week when I was out of town, but that's it. You want to escape the snow, come to Cleveland.

Compared to what's going on downstate, we've had a fairly tame winter. A few inches here and there, but the kids have not missed a day of school due to weather since December. Today was a balmy 36, we didn't even zip up our coats.

Best of both worlds: the 45-50 degree "heat" Saturday afternoon wasn't enough to make it feel comfortable, but was enough to ruin the Central Park Winter Fest, with slushy sledding and melting ice sculptures.

So I shoveled a nice path from the driveway to the door yesterday for the delivery person. (We don't use the front door, we enter the house through the garage.)
Naturally, its snowing again and I'll have to shovel AGAIN!
Next time I'll buy the stuff myself and just give it to her.
