Good Bad Film Music Fact #1

Robert Altman gave composer Johnny Mandel two instructions in writing a song for the movie version of M*A*S*H*. First, it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless." Second, it had to be "the stupidest song ever written." With the TV spinoff taking that song as it's theme, and being among the most rerun shows ever. Mandel probably has a gigantic mansion on the Malibu Beach called "The Stupidest Song Ever Written House."

Good, Bad Music Fact #2

Altman intended to write the lyrics himself, but couldn't, in his grave middle-age years, muster enough silliness to write something as insipid as he wanted. So he gave the job to his 14-year-old son, Michael, who knocked it out in 10 minutes. Since songwriting royalties are split between composer and lyricist whether or not the lyrics are used, I assume Michael has also worn his fair share of gold-plate diapers.

Good Bad Film Music Fact #3

The singer of the main title theme to Blazing Saddles was Frankie Laine, in earlier times known for "Sea Cruise."

This has been Good Bad Movie Music.

Ooh, can I play?

Good Bad Film Music Fact #4

"You're the Best" by Joe Esposito, the notoriously 80s-tastic cheezy song played during the All-Valley Karate Championships montage in The Karate Kid, was intended to be used in Rocky III but was replaced by "Eye of the Tiger" and then was rejected again for use in Flashdance in preference for "Maniac." Someone with better YouTube skills than I should edit "You're the Best" into the movies that wisely turned it down.

Can you imagine, though? Not good enough for Rocky III.

Also, Stallone's search through Sembello and Esposito before settling on Survivor was necessitated only because Queen wouldn't grant permission for him to use "Another One Bites the Dust."

Robert Altman has complained that his son made more money from M*A*S*H than he did.
