Ortiz hits a wind-aided home run to dead center!
Santana strikes out Alou.
Cabrera makes a nice backhanded catch in foul ground to retire Beltre.
Santana walks Encarnacion.
Alberto Castillo with a bloop single into short right field. Encarnacion advances to third.
Slowly hit ground ball by Taveras to Fonzie at second, who throws it into center field.
Castillo on third and Taveres on second.
Soriano at the plate.

I can't find the lineups, so I'll just reconstruct them as I go forward.

Rotblatt

Soriano strikes out to end the inning.

Bottom of the second, Venezuela due up.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 01:47 PM

Hernandez, leading off, strikes out.
Ordonez hits a long fly ball to right, caught by the Alou.

At least Venezuela's making Colon work--two full counts in a row.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 01:50 PM

3-2 on Martinez. Fonzie on deck. V. Zambrano warming up in pen.

Apparently, a small K zone by the ump.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 01:55 PM

Santana strikes out Tejada to start off the 3rd. That's 4 K's for Santana.

Play-by-play guys think the ump is terrible and is starting to play a negative roll in the game.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 01:57 PM

Pujols walks.

Elster88
Mar 07 2006 01:59 PM

That's a sick Dominican lineup. Cabrera batting 7th.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:01 PM

Yeah, my lineup's all kinds of screwy though. I think he's batting 6th.

Santana gets squeezed on Ortiz and walks him, but gets Alou to ground into a double play.

Announcers REALLY unhappy with this ump. So is Santana.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:04 PM

Fonzie with a lead-off single and a tiny bit of redemption for his error.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:06 PM

Grounder to Tejada, who bobbles it, costing the double play. Fonzie out at second.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:09 PM

Vizquel slaps the ball to left for a single. He's 2-2.

Guillen pops up to short, then Abreu makes an out. Not sure how.

Santana still in.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:16 PM

Leadoff single for Beltre.

Who the heck is A Castillo catching for the DR? Is that the great ex-Met Alberto Castillo?

Santana strikes out Encarnacion, and NOW Sojo comes out to yank him. C. Zambrano in to pitch.

Santana ends up with 3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR

on edit--3 hits, not 4.

It is, in fact, former Met Alberto Castillo! Good call. He got 100 at bats with KC last year, and sucked--.602 OPS.

seawolf17
Mar 07 2006 02:26 PM

He got an AB for Oakland in '05 and sucked there too, striking out.

He's the best catcher the DR could find? I thought they were a powerhouse.

Willets Point

I remember when Castillo hit a home run off Pedro during a Mets-Red Sox game I saw at Fenway back in 1998.

Venezuela, meanwhile, has Ramon Hernandez at first. He only played parts of 2 games there in 2001. One team deep at catcher, one team not so deep.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:33 PM

Batista came in to relieve Colon. Cabrera got on base, but Hernandez ground into a double play. Ordonez with a single.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:35 PM

Martinez with a walk. Fonzie's at the plate with 2 outs and the tying runs on.

Yancy Street Gang
Mar 07 2006 02:37 PM

If they had done this WBC thing twenty years ago, the Dominican team would probably have a shortstop at every position.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:37 PM

Fonzie with a ribbie single into right, driving in Ordonez!

Martinez at 3rd.

DR lead cut to 2-1.

This is a pretty good game so far.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:38 PM

Juan Rivera hits one to deep right center, but Encarnacion gets there to end the inning.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:41 PM

Soriano ground out.

Mets born in the Dominican Republic (36)

Mets born in Venezuela (18)

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:43 PM

Tejada pops it up. 2 out.

Pujols at bat.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:47 PM

Nifty, Yance!

Ortiz walks.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:48 PM

Alou singles in Pujols from 2nd, and Ortiz chugs into 3rd uncontested! 3-1 Dominican.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:51 PM

And a no-doubt Adrian Beltre home run!

Wow. Zambrano REALLY struggling.

6-1 DR.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:52 PM

Single by Encarnacion, but Zambrano gets Castillo to ground out to second to end the inning.

Frayed Knot
Mar 07 2006 02:53 PM

Friggin Zambrano getting lit up.
I can't believe he was traded for ... Oh it's Carlos!

Nevermind.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 02:58 PM

heh. We'll get to see Victor before this game is out, I think . . .

Vizquel grounds out, but Guillen singles into left.

Pujols charges a slow grounder up the 1st base line and gets back to 1st before Abreu.

Sounds like a nice play--the announcers are impressed with his fitness level and improvement at 1st.

Cabrera with a deep deep home run!! DR lead cut to 6-3.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:09 PM

Guillen is playing first, not Hernandez. I'm not sure who's catching yet, but I assume it's Victor Martinez . . .

Taveras walks, then Soriano grounds to short. Vizquel with a nice flip to Fonzie, who makes a strong throw to first, but bounces it. Guillen makes a clean grab to nail Soriano.

Zambrano strikes out Tejada to end the half.

Good game.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:15 PM

Fonzie's en fugeo!!! Solo shot home run to cut the lead to 6-4!!!

OlerudOwned
Mar 07 2006 03:24 PM

Zambrano, Victor is living on the wild side.
2 on, 2 out for Dominica.

Figures the one game I wanted to watch is the one they put on when I'm in school.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:31 PM

I missed a chunk of this, but Vizquel is on second with no outs. Score still 6-4.

Guillen just struck out.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:31 PM

Marte is pitching.

Willets Point
Mar 07 2006 03:41 PM

Controversy on a hit by Cabrera that bounces off the top of the wall. Umps get the call right, Venezuela scores only one run to make it 6-5.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:45 PM

6-5 top half of the eighth inning.

Another home run, I think, but a minor crisis at work prevented me from hearing anything other than yelling on the radio.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:49 PM

Victor sets em down 1-2-3. Soriano is 0-5 and makes the last out. Again.

6 more outs for Venezuela.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:55 PM

Belliard replaces Soriano at 2nd and makes a nice play to nail Victor Martinez, then Tejada makes a bare handed throw to rob red-hot Fonzie of an infield single.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 03:59 PM

Tejada, 0-4 with 3 K's, bunts for a lead-off single against Victor.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 04:07 PM

Jesus, but Ortiz is a monster. Another long home run--it went over the bullpen.

Carlos Hernandez relieved Victor, who got the job done for Venezuela.

This is a good fucking game.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 04:12 PM

Wow. Beltre with another home run as well. 10-5, DR.

This game got lop-sided in a hurry.

Thanks for the updates!

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 04:17 PM

Julio relieved Herandez after Ortiz's home run, then gave up a single, a home run, a single and now walked a batter.

Who were those poor schmucks that traded a decent SP for him again? They must be kicking themselves right now . . .

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 04:20 PM

Julio gets his first out, then gives up a ribbie single for Belliard.

Something happened and Julio got out of the inning.

11-5, Dominican Republic.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 04:23 PM

Sanchez in to close it out for the Dominicans.

Apparently, the Dominican fans are very, very, very excited.

Not about Sanchez, but about the offensive firepower in the ninth.

I wish I had a TV in my office . . .

Edgy DC
Mar 07 2006 04:23 PM

Met Julio vs. Met Sanchez on the mounds now.

Yancy Street Gang
Mar 07 2006 04:26 PM

I sure hope that John Maine turns out to be pretty good.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 04:26 PM

2 outs, 2 strikes on Abreu.

Rotblatt
Mar 07 2006 04:28 PM

Sanchez gets Abreu to pop up and the crowd sounds lit its going nuts. The DR team streams out of the 3rd base dugout carrying the Dominican flag.
