Why have the Mets gone 54 games under .500 since 2000?

I'm just curious why you think this has happened. I have my own reasons, which I don't think I need to expand upon, but I wonder what you attribute this performance to. Bad luck? Shortsighted moves by GMs? Meddling know-nothing ownership? Dunces like Howe and Randolph running the team? Bad umpiring? Injuries? Uninspired, underperforming players? Bad chemistry? Racial unrest? "You never know"? Weak scouting/stocking of minor leagues? Do you believe they haven't had a losing record at all? Is there some other explanation you favor?

I will butt out of this thread at this point, so you can participate without any contact with me.

I have my own reasons too, but I don't think I need to expand upon them either.

I think they were so bad for 4 years ('01, '02, '03, '04) because they built their roster to win with veterans in '98, '99, and '00 and were pretty succesful.
i can't fault them for making another go at it in '01 it would be insane to rebuild the year after making the world series and the '01 team wasn't really that bad they were 2 september blown saves against atlanta from the division.
they paid the price for overextendking themselves and having all these veterans around in '02 and it took them until last year to rebuild, which is fine, i wish the knicks would follow a similiar model.
