Memories of Johnny Monell

Johnny Monell was the Mets third-string catcher in 2015, but got relegated to the fourth string (and no big league action) after the arrival of René Rivera. Now he's bound for The Land of the Morning Calm, in the City of Changwan, where he hopes to meet as many Koreans as there were in Flushing.

Johnny was (and indeed, still is) not only a New York Native (Christopher Columbus HS in the Bronx, thank you very much), but a Mets legacy, as his father (also named Johnny) was signed by the team as an undrafted free agent back in 1985, climbing as high as AAA before leaving the organization in 1990. But he kept at it, grinding it out in the Mexican Leagues and the US independent minors until 2001, finally packing it in at 35.

Had an impressive Spring Training in 2015. Extremely aggressive hitter who saw a few pitches he liked.

I remember that weird manicured-five-o'clock-shadow thing he had, as per the above card. I don't remember anything he did.

Did he do things? He must have done things. Did he do things?

I have no idea what Monell did either. Did not play for the Mets in 2016. Have always conflated Monell with Danny Muno.

Lunchie has it right. He swung like he meant business. He doesn't get cheated up there.

Actually got his initial promotion not be a catcher, as the Mets were already carrying two of those, but be a bat off the bench

I remember that 2015 Spring Training. He looked like the real deal at that time. Wound up being a AAAA level talent.

But he had a great smile!

Hey! That's the same photo on my custom card. Did you shoot that Monell pic?

metfairy that is a terrific picture. Right up there with the Wilmer picture and the Mr. Met/Phillies bench one.

It's amazing to watch you learn this craft over these years.

Between you and DGW we have a glut of photographers on the CPF. I wonder if this means one of you will be traded.

No kidding. How does it end up on the internet machine? I made that Monell card about a year ago. And I remember that the pickings were, understandably, thin as far as Monell pics. In fact, if I remember correctly, your pic might've been the only one I found that I thought was suitable.

The vast majority of what I post on Flickr is with a Creative Commons license (every so often I'll pull back the rights on a special image). In theory anyone can use the image so long as I get attribution for it. In reality, the attribution isn't always present.

Re: Memories of Johnny Monell

I see. And then from flickr, I guess it can turn up on a Google image search. I'm guessing that when you uploaded that Monell photo to your flickr account, you added some information to the photo, like the word "Monell", and maybe the word "Mets" too. Because when I search for Mets photos for customs, I type in the player's name in the search box and the word "Mets". But I don't remember being steered to your flickr account on that Monell search. I would've remembered that.

UPDATE: I just ran a google image search for "Monell Mets" and your image turned up from a NY Sportsday page (unattributed). So no one would discover that it's your Monell pic from this particular search. There isn't a Monell photo coming up on that search that leads to your flickr page, either. So either you've since deleted that photo from flickr or the internet works in quirky and strange ways that I don't quite understand.

Nice pic, though. Thanks.

I usually do include some identifying titles and tags on most photos.

And no, I did not delete the photo from Flickr. The link above goes directly to the original Flickr image.

Re: Memories of Johnny Monell

The tags are fed into google search and WALA! Your photo (or card, whatever) shows up.

On the card blog there's a section to add tags. I always add Zvon as the last tag. Now when I type "Mets Zvon" into google (image) search I get a wall of my stuff. For any specific card I'll tag mfc, players name, team, etc. and in no time at all it's a search result. That might be the most helpful thing about a blog run by Blogger/google.

Spanish. And Latin. I can recall two words in each and both have to do with girls.

I conflate Monell and Muno as well. I think it was Muno's dad who coached my nephew in baseball here in N.J..
I got nothing on Monell. Not even a fake card :(.
