Re-Sign Jesse

Just realized that with the loss of Bartolo, I will be older than every Met in 2017. I think a few guys around here are my age. Bart just torpedoed a whole bunch of us.

Granderson will be the elder statesman in 2017. Pretty young, for an oldest Met, at 37.

For the last three years, Bart has carried the torch for us old guys, pushing this date further out than we should have reasonably expected. Prior to Bart, it was Latroy Hawkins, in 2013 at age 40. Others below:

2012: Tim Byrdak, 39
2011: Miguel Batista, 40
2010: Henry Blanco, 39
2009: Gary Sheffield, 41
2008: Moises Alou, 42
2007: Moises Alou, 41

In 2007, we had FOUR guys who were 41. Alou, Jeff Conine, Tom Glavine, and Sandy Alomar Jr. (I'd have to look up the birthdays to see who was actually the oldest but too lazy to do it).

RA Dickey, to my surprise, was never the oldest Met.

Re: Re-Sign Jesse

I went through this particular rite of passage several years ago.

For me, the first Met player who was younger than me was Jose Oquendo, and the last Met player who was older than me was Julio Franco.

Re: Re-Sign Jesse

There were many players on the 1962 Mets who were older than I.
The oldest was Gene Woodling (39), followed by Gil Hodges (38).
There aren't any now.

So far. Not if we re-sign Jesse.

We need a lefty. Post-season experience. It makes all the sense in the world.

Re: Re-Sign Jesse

Oh, there's hope. Hang on.

There are five active MLBers who are older than I am:

1. Colon born 1973-05-24
2. Suzuki born 1973-10-22
3. Dickey born 1974-10-29
4. Nathan born 1974-11-22
5. Uehara born 1975-04-03

Colon and Dickey will be in Atlanta, and Uehara signed with the Cubs... but there are two bullpen arms there. Uehara was still VERY effective last season, and Joe Nathan was solid coming back from injury. (Plus, Stony Brook.)

Re: Re-Sign Jesse

The ship long sailed for me on being older than anyone currently playing.

There are 11 managers older than me (Terry, Showalter, Ned Yost, Molitor, Brian Snitker, Maddon, Black, Mackinnin, Clint Hurdle (by a few months), Bochy and Dusty Baker). The rest of them are unschooled pups.

On quick look, the former Met I am closest in age (within 23 days) with is Randall K.
Myers. Most famous MLB'r (also within 23 days) is W. Roger Clemens. YUCK!

In September 2004, John Franco turned 44 while i was 43. He was the last guy playing for the Mets who was older than me.
The first guy who was younger? in 1983, there were 2 - Oquendo and Strawberry.

And i think Bobby Valentine is the only Met who shares my birthday, but not my birthdate.

no, i guess i'm not. so Julio in 2007 was the last older Met. Is there a place that list all the Mets birthdates?

I'm spot on with Clemens, unfortunately. Day and year.

Ryan Freel and Juan Encarnacion for me; both star-crossed former MLBers. Only Met I share a day with was Willard Hunter.

Sometimes I think I imagined him, as nobody else seems to remember he was a pretty tidy bullpen lefty during the mini-revival of late '95. Never understood why he was let go and didn't resurface.

Unless Mets grab Juan Uribe again, Bartolo looms as the last of the 1970s-born Mets.

I was born 2 days before David Cone. Our right arms were separated at birth.

Rick Ownbey is two days older than me, Ron Gardenhire two days younger. The three of us should get together and have cake next October.

Smack between Jose Valverde and Tony Armas, Jr. in perhaps the worst birth-pen ever. [Does demonstrative post-birthday-check dance, pounds chest]

See, THIS is yet another reason we should have checked in on Uehara.

Rick Aguilera is clearly the best of the Born in '61 Mets and he was almost born in '62. A distasteful group of runners-up.

Case, you might want to consider changing your birthday.

This thread reminds me of the Casey Stengel line, "Most of the people my age are currently dead".
