2k16 Charity Gift Exchange

I love getting my emails from Camfed, Operation Warm, Starlight, Celiac Foundation and all the others I've donated to over the years through you guys, and through this thing.

Anyone wanna go again this year?

Quoting Ochoseis from last year: "Usual rules apply - non-political charities only, and the Wilpons are not considered a charity."

Cheers, Cee-Pee-Effers.

I'd love to choose American Jewish World Service as my charity, which provides nonsectarian disaster relief and human rights services throughout the world. It also receives a 4/4 Charity Navigator rating.

As always, thank you for coordinating this wonderful activity!

I love this. Count me in.

My daughter and some of her friends at Central Michigan University created a non-profit charity called "Pack Your Back." They raise money to purchase school supplies for economically challenged children in Flint, Mich. She's kept her name off the website because of Dad's job, but I'm proud of the work the kids did. They raised several thousand dollars and had school supply collection bins around the state. They gave away a bunch of supplies at an event in Flint just before the start of the school year.

They're business students, so they did all the proper legal things, and it's a formal 501c3. They received a fair amount of publicity, and the university has promoted it.

Here's the website: [url]http://packyourback.org/index.html

Here's a story about the group:
[url]http://www.cm-life.com/article/2016/07/pack-your-back-helps-flint-children-with-school-supplies

If you guys think this is inappropriate , I can submit a different group.

Hey MGiM- the link to their website in your post seems to be broken, this looks like this one though-> http://packyourback.org/index.html

I can't speak for everyone, but it sounds like a real nice thing to me. I'd be happy if they drew my name.

Found their FB (https://www.facebook.com/PackYourBack/) looks like Gates Foundation was chipping in with their work, too. Yay kids, for doing nice things.

Oops! I hit the Img tab instead of the URL tab!

Thank you! I'm proud of the kids. They put a ton of work into it. Walt Disney World supported them, too, giving them four admission tickets to raffle off to raise money.

Re: 2k16 Charity Gift Exchange

This year, I'm gonna push this really wonderful no-kill shelter here in Albuquerque called the Watermelon Mountain Ranch. They have this 10-acre spread just west of the Middle of Nowhere, and they have all these little casitas dotting the land, little homes for the cats and dogs who otherwise have none. I spent a lot of time looking for the perfect mutt for me, and visited their place a bunch of times and went to a lot of their adoption events. It goes without saying that the people working for these animals were amazing, but they made it very clear that any help they could get would go a long way... food, towels, cash, anything.

The saddest thing, maybe, were "the lifers", the poor Cujo dogs who were never gonna get a home and everyone knew it. But even those dogs that would seem tougher to love, they loved em anyway. I can't say enough about this place.

Also, it's where I adopted Tumbleweed Riff-Raff, seen below engrossed in a mid-summer's Mets/Pirates game.

And William Randolph Nelson, who it turns out, is a goddamn frisbee prodigy.

Re: 2k16 Charity Gift Exchange

I was at a complete loss as to what charity to choose. Then I came back east to visit my hiking club for the weekend, and went hiking with someone yesterday who told me about a woman she knew who was doing amazing work educating children in Nepal.

Meet Maggie Doyne, who took a year off between high school and college to travel to Nepal eleven years ago, and never left. She started her foundation when she was nineteen, with $5,000 she earned from babysitting. Since then, she's become legal guardian to about fifty Nepalese children, and is CNN's reigning Hero of the Year. So her charity is getting plenty of funding as it is, but I figure another $25 couldn't hurt.

Dear cooby,
On behalf of Starlight Children's Foundation, I would like to thank you for your gift of $25.00, received on December 15, 2016 . It's because of your support we are able to make a transformative impact on children's health.
Your donation to Starlight Brave Gowns is brightening the lives of seriously ill children. Together, we are bringing high-quality, comfortable and brightly-colored gowns to thousands of kids at more than 700 children’s hospitals and other facilities across the US. Your gift of a gown empowers a child with laughter, fun and joy.

I love this! CF, I hope you don't mind that I made my contribution in honor of my little grandson, who wore a few hospital gowns in his first year, but is thankfully past all that (we pray)

in the spirit of this same stuff, if you use Amazon (I know some here don't) but if you do, you can go to smile.amazon.com instead of the regular url, and a portion of whatever crap you buy when get donated to the charity that you designate (Opus 40 is among those you can choose). I just learned a small, few bucks went to a great organization I used to volunteer with in California from me buying motor oil and toothpaste. So, yay.

Re: 2k16 Charity Gift Exchange

Dear K****,

Thank you for supporting BlinkNow’s end-of-year campaign with your generous gift.
Your donation: $25.00
Along with the kids, and the entire team at BlinkNow, I am filled with gratitude for the faith you have placed in us and our project. With the holiday season upon us, we are reflecting on the past year, and I am constantly in awe of our supporters; each of you have helped shape and grow Kopila Valley.
It's been an incredible year for us. The children at both the Home and School, in Nepal and abroad, are thriving and growing; our trainees at the Women’s Center are well into their program developing vocational skills, but more importantly gaining a stronger sense of self-worth and purpose; our campus construction is blazing ahead; and I am smiling and enjoying so much love from the kids and our BlinkNow family around the world. It’s magical.
We’re wrapping up 2016, and I can’t wait to share more milestones with you as BlinkNow enters our 10th year in 2017.
Wishing you all the joys of the season and happiness throughout the coming year.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart,

Re: 2k16 Charity Gift Exchange

Man, wallet-loss scares. We call those "weekdays" in my house.

Dear Edgy,

Thank you for making a donation to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Your gift will have a profound impact in our fight against hate groups and support our work in classrooms and courtrooms across the nation.

Today, we're facing a new reality – a president-elect who has denigrated people because of their race, their religion, their ethnicity, their gender, and more.

Our mission is to hold Donald Trump to what he is saying now – that he will be a president for all Americans and that he will work to bind the wounds of division, wounds that his own words have caused.

We're already at work.

The day after the election we provided resources to our nation's teachers to help them begin to heal the scars that the campaign has left on their students.

And we've alerted the country to the reaction of white supremacists to Mr. Trump's election in an effort to inoculate the nation against their growing influence.

Tomorrow, and every day in the future, we'll fight for the rights of the most vulnerable people in America – those victimized by bigotry and discrimination.

We hope Mr. Trump truly means what he says about reaching out to all Americans.

We are so grateful to know that there are people like you on our side, people who are so passionate about justice and equality. With your gift, you are there — by our side — when we're fighting hate, teaching tolerance, and seeking justice for those who have no other advocate.

Your personal commitment to SPLC's work for justice and tolerance is deeply appreciated and it will make a difference in the lives of the people we help.

Sincerely,
Morris Dees Signature

Re: 2k16 Charity Gift Exchange

Sorry I'm late to this party. I donated $25 to the American Diabetes Foundation and have given $25 to the Salvation Army.
Didn't see those charities on anyone's list and are both deserving and personal to me and my family.
I am a Diabetic, and (about 30 years ago) when a relative of mine had passed away his son was serving in the military overseas. The Salvation Army gave him the money to come home to attend his father's funeral. I've donated to them every year ever since.

I know this says "exchange" but both of those charities are very meaningful to me. Sorry if I broke the rules.

"The Hope Basket includes a gift of rabbits and a starter flock of chickens. Families also receive training and education in the animals' care to make sure their hope becomes a reality. This: provides eggs and protein for nourishment; boosts income through sales of extra eggs and offspring; and passes on the Gift to others, since livestock can multiply quickly."

Rabbits are easy to care for and can reproduce in a short amount of time. Chickens lay eggs and provide manure for vegetable gardens. Your livestock donation provides hope for struggling farmers looking for a way out of poverty.

Re: 2k16 Charity Gift Exchange

It doesn't matter. All of this is sensational and I love that we do it!

The best - a basket of hope - was saved for last. Thx, Gwreck.

Thanks, everyone, and cool we got extra people jumping in this year, too. See ya 11 months or so if we're all lucky.
