Karaoke Question

My company's holiday party will be this Friday night. The have karaoke every year and we expect to have it again this year. As I've mentioned before, my voice can clear out a room faster than someone yelling "FIRE!". But I'd like to sing at least one song. Last year a co-worker and I did "Baby, Its Cold Outside" since one part can be spoken rather than sung. Those are the kinds of songs I like to do.

In past years, I've embarrassed myself by trying "Copacabana" and "Money For Nothing".
I was thinking of "Yesterday", "Girl from Ipanema" and "Smooth".
Any suggestions (other than staying home) would be greatly appreciated.

I tried the doo doo doo stuff before on a Robert Palmer song. Not a pretty sight. Or sound.
(although I managed to get three of the women in the office to "play" air guitar behind me)

As for Smooth. Cooby, I forgot that you like Santana songs. If I do it, I promise to try not to ruin it.
Monk, I only see a big blank square. what's in it?

Re: Karaoke Question

"Low Rider," by War, is a good karaoke song for those vocally impaired. Very spoken word-ish.

Re: Karaoke Question

Speak-singing through "My Way" has worked for more than one tonally-impaired vocalist. (Might want to avoid the Chelsea Hotel afterward, though, to be safe.)

If you pick a fun song (not "Smooth," e.g.), or one that's potentially funny in context (say, "Smooth Operator" or "Smooth Criminal" instead), and you ham the hell out of it, most vocal shortcomings will be forgiven.

Lunchie's favorite karaoke kut—"Pop Muzik"—is perfect for just such a situation.

Re: Karaoke Question

Thanks, all.
I'll listen to those and pick one.
Smooth Criminal is one of my favorite videos, but I don't have the voice, dance moves or machine gun to pull that off.
But now that I think of it, if I did have a machine gun, it might be a way to keep them in the room while I sing.

I do think Smooth would be a FUN song though. Get your wife up there to do the chorus with you. You'll blow the roof off the joint

Thanks. I'll take you comment to mean I have your approval to sing the Santana song. And that's what I will do.
Unfortunately, she won't be there. She hates Karaoke! So she's saving her partying for one at our neighbor's place the next night.
And as for a "performance" type song, I think I'll don my black leather jacket and do "Hurts So Good" (from his John Cougar Mellencamp days). Who cares if I can't sing? It'll be fun to do.

Re: Karaoke Question

Margaritaville is pretty easy range-wise. Sweet Caroline is good because everyone starts singing along and you become part of a chorus.

If you can fake a falsetto Prince's "Kiss" is fun.

There is no better "ham it up" song than Mack the Knife.

My "go-to" is usually "You May Be Right." I LOVE karaoke. It's one of our conference staples.

Re: Karaoke Question

I've only done it once I think, Crocodile Rock was my tune of choice.
Hopefully there is no evidence of my performance anywhere...

You should aim lower next time. Baritones and basses. A David Lee Roth vocal. A Ronnie James vocal.

You'd kill it with a Neil Diamond song. Start working on "Forever in Blue Jeans."

Counterpoint: Any Britney Spears/Rihanna song done a la Sinatra or Dean Martin. Also, MOTHERTRUCKING MY WAY. (Which I hate as a song, but still... good asshole-karaoke fodder.)

My father requested that song be performed at his 80th birthday party last summer, and my daughter sang the hell out of it. Great performance piece!

Hoping didn't make it so.
Thanks for letting us know.

The video is going viral right now.

Re: Karaoke Question

It was tonight(Friday).

It turns out the KJ (Karaoke Jockey?) didn't have some of the songs that were suggested, so I sang:
(solo) Yesterday (Beatles) and Smooth (Santana) which went quite well. Thanks for your support, Cooby
(duet) The KJ didn't have the Lady Antebellum song we wanted, so my co-worker and I repeated Baby, Its Cold Outside from last year.
(trio) Games People Play (Spinners) including choreography.

Thanks for your suggestions.
