Last night, driving home from a visit with friends, I TWICE stumbled upon "Taking Care of Christmas" a shameful ten-minutes-in-the-back-room rewrite of "TCoB" by Randy Bachman. Turn in your rock 'n' roll passport, Randy.

I hate Santa Baby. Always have. My grocery store has been playing this horrid song by, I think, Cyndi Lauper. 'Feels like Christmas, just like Christmas...'. Her voice and the military style drums in the background make it a true disaster. A good time to head to frozen foods and hope the coolers drown it out. Also in the past I heard a godawful Donna Summer ditty but not this year and with any luck I won't remember how it goes now Whatever happened to Silver Bells and Merry Christmas Darling? :(

I don't mean to indict any modestly sincere composition, just the professional laziness and the attempt to sneak into the back door of programmed playlists by doing a mealymouthed lyrics rewrite of your signature song. "That was Joe Walsh with 'Santa's Been Good to Me So Far,' and here's Thomas Dolby with 'She Blinded Me with Presents'!" Show some self-respect!

With something like that, I always wonder if the composers finished, sat back and said, "Hey, that's good!" Or, did they say something like, "Wow. Bing's not really going to sing this, is he?"
