I was really hoping this would be an Odd Couple thread.

Viola Davis' nod is for FENCES, not HIDDEN FIGURES, although how she qualifies as a supporting actress is beyond me.

That I got this wrong I believe makes me a racist; either that or the site I copied this off of made the mistake in which case they are and I'm in the clear. At least I didn't call it HIDDEN FENCES IN THE MOONLIGHT

If you were really a racist, you would have called it CABIN IN THE SKY.

The promotional material for LION doesn't exactly paint Dev Patel as a supporting player either. Back in 1979 the Academy manipulated the rules by putting George Burns into the less competitive Supporting Actor category for GOING IN STYLE* in what certainly looked like a blatant attempt to arrange what was in effect a lifetime achievement award for the then 85 y/o. I'm sure it's happened other times as well although that's the only one that comes to mind. Maybe they're trying their hardest for an OSCARSNOTWHITEATALL hashtag. * a movie which is about to be remade with Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine in the Burns, Art Carney, & Lee Strasberg roles

As a big fan of La La Land, I'm delighted. It's also great the "Audition (The Dreamers that Dream)" is up for best song.

Reconsider seeing Florence Foster Jenkins - it was very entertaining.

Ooh, I love Vic's list each year. Movies I saw, in vague-ish order of preference:

I count 16 movies I've seen this year. Top 10 would be (not necessarily in this order)"

I think that these are the only ones I saw. (And I saw 10 Cloverfield Lane on TV, not in a theater, by the way.)

ok, i'm reconsidering it. And now, after reconsidering it, i'm still not going to see it. I have an image in my mind of wild horses trying, unsuccessfully, to drag me into a theater to see it, but i triumph!

Wow, I saw a whopping 20 movies released in 2016 (quite high for me) even though many of them were seen just recently via cable and/or DVD

I had hoped that Jim Jarmusch's "Paterson" might get something. Amazon bought the movie. Released 12/28

btw, Lin-Manual Miranda is up for the song "How Far I'll Go" from MOANA, which is significant in that, if he wins, it'll make him part of the exclusive 'EGOT' club designating those who have won an EMMY, a GRAMMY (2 in his case), an OSCAR, and a TONY (3). He also has a Pulitzer (PEGOT?).

Just shut the award shows down and just give Neil Patrick Harris any awards he wants. I enjoyed that. Thank you. Later

Yeah, C. Affleck's past transgressions for alleged harassment issues (settled two cases out of court) may just be enough to lose the award that seemed like it's been his for about four months now.

This just in: the Cleveland Indians were the actual winners of the 2016 World Series.

Went to bed right after Fay Dunaway read the wrong movie so I missed the final drama. Good result, though.

MFS62 Feb 27 2017 07:34 AM Re: Oh Oscar, Oscar, Oscar (2017 Version) |
Obligatory movie analogy- If there had been a mix-up like that with the envelopes at Don Corleone's daughter's wedding, the person who did it would be wearing cement shoes at the bottom of the river by now.

sharpie Feb 27 2017 07:37 AM Re: Oh Oscar, Oscar, Oscar (2017 Version) |
Yeah, how does stuff like that even happen. And who discovered it? The accountants?

Same here.
Duplicate envelopes is apparently the answer -- Dunaway & Beatty were handed a copy of the Emma Stone - Best Actress card and saw 'LA LA LAND' mentioned. But if the idea is to keep everyone in the dark about the winner -- I guess so as to maintain 'The Big Reveal' even among the presenters -- it's obvious that someone had to know and it seems odd that they'd keep a couple of the accountants backstage there just in case something that couldn't possibly happen actually happens. And if someone is going to know anyway then you might as well clue the presenters in before they go out there just to avoid something like this. They are actors after all and so you figure they can fake surprise as well as anyone.

I'm sure they're ultimately fine with the 'any press is good press' angle of it. Otherwise couldn't they have just said nothing and let the 'wrong' film win and move on?

Benjamin Grimm Feb 27 2017 11:01 AM Re: Oh Oscar, Oscar, Oscar (2017 Version) |
Going with the "cover up" option is almost always the wrong choice.

Frayed Knot Mar 02 2017 06:55 AM Re: Oh Oscar, Oscar, Oscar (2017 Version) |
A theatre in London showed the opening half minute or so of LA LA LAND to an audience who paid to see MOONLIGHT before 'realizing' their mistake in and switching to the correct film
