Whither Goest Thou, Jay Bruce?

I figure a thread just for the latest Jay Bruce rumors seems to make sense. Nj.com (quoting the NY Post) saying maybe the Rangers and Giants have interest?

Two prospects is exactly what they paid for him, and that was before his stock fell with a highly soggy finish.

Desperation is a bad look. Markets change. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe in spring. Maybe in April.

Phils signing Michael Saunders this week and the Jays re-signing Joey Bats just shrunk the market a bit more.

I guess you keep him through spring training if nothing comes up. Guys get hurt. If not on our team, then on others.

Having an extra 30 HR guy is a good thing.

That's one way to look at it. The other way to look at it is that the pool of outfielders to choose from just shrunk for the buyers.

I'd trade him for Lundqvist or Will Tye.

Sure, but there was a thought the Mets drastically overpaid for him. And then doubled down on that over-value by picking up the option.

It would've been interesting to see the Mets sign Saunders themselves to sorta corner the market on outfielders.

All while trying to market corner outfielders.

Bruce would make sense as a middle of the Order leftie in Philly.

Beyond that, did Bruce bugger somebody?

The Orioles are close to resigning Trumbo so another door is about to close. Sandy's going to have to lower his expectations or Conforto might be in Las Vegas this April.

He'll be able to watch some Raider pre-season games. (If their move gets approved)

Bruce, Granderson, Cespedes, Lagares, Conforto.

Anyone else will be in Vegas.

I mean, in that scenario I play Cespedes, Lagares, Granderson and work Conforto in liberally. But I didn't want Bruce in the first place. It seems unlikely Collins won't do Ces, Grand, Jay most days, though he did seem to start to 'rest' Bruce more last season.

I'm not a Bruce fan at all, and I was against the trade that got him, but I have to admit I am surprised by the absolute lack of interest. I mean, the guy does hit 30 HR's. That's gotta be worth something. Who wouldn't want to slot 30 HR's in the 7 hole.

Maybe you just keep him. Put Conforto in CF and just roll the dice.

That's probably what I'd do, with liberal use of Lagares too.

Re: Whither Goest Thou, Jay Bruce?

I'd hang on to him rather than eat his salary. At some point, and perhaps before April 1, some team may have a left-handed slugger tear up his knee, or something, and then will be looking to acquire someone like Jay Bruce. I would guess that the Mets will have a chance to trade him before June 1 anyway, and would therefore only pay a fraction of that $13 million.

His presence does continue that logjam of outfielders, but it looks like that's something we're going to have to live with for at least a little while.

Re: Whither Goest Thou, Jay Bruce?

Yeah, he isn't a BAD player where you just want him off the team. either the trade market will sort itself out with an injury elsewhere or the playing time will sort itself out with an injury here. its ok to sit on a redundant asset if nobody is paying fair price.

I was thinking 1B would be a good place to slot Bruce in, here and there, until I looked up his career numbers at that position (3 games, 2 errors in 2014). Uh, sucky.

well he hits lefty and Duda is better so..no, not really, unless Duda gets hurt.

All of this could have been avoided by signing Bartolo Colon and jettisoning Bruce.

Well, he's not a toxic presence, or bitchy, even. But he IS, like, a pretty minor further performance decline away from being useless. Like, if his power ebbs by, like, 25-30 percent going forward (see: 2014-2015), he's unsaleable as week-old shrimp.

Hello,

I've been reading that the Mets plan on keeping Jay Bruce. I think this is posturing. Acting too desperate to move a player would seem to drive down his value.

It's a truism that you can never have too much pitching. Why isn't it a truism that you can never have too much hitting?

Frayed Knot

Re: Whither Goest Thou, Jay Bruce?

You can't have too much hitting (IMO) but, while pitchers need to take turns, too many hitters requires one or more to sit.
The NYM problem isn't that they have too much hitting but that the positional mix of their hitters is unbalanced and in some cases redundant; too many LH sticks and too many corner OFs.

I don't think it's their plan to keep Bruce so much as it's the best alternative at the moment.

Re: Whither Goest Thou, Jay Bruce?

Lagares is a useful bench player, with a good glove in CF, a decent baserunner, and a decent bat against LHP, but if they can get back something of value, then ok. They'd still need a guy on the bench to fill those roles, and i don't think we have any that are major-league ready. Maybe Lagares, Lugo and Cecchini for a decent starting CFer?

Re: Whither Goest Thou, Jay Bruce?

I guess the 2017 Mets roster will be a hybrid rerun of 2016.

The catch as I see it is not the offense or defense but having to rely on four pitchers, Harvey, deGrom, Matz and Wheeler to come up aces. I will settle for two hoping for all.

I have had thoracic outlet surgery. An extra rib was diagnosed by my right shoulder and removed and I have felt great since so I am betting/hoping that Matt Harvey comes back quickly and well.

I hope we are not pining for Bartolo Colon if the four crap out cause Jay Bruce can't pitch.
